***The Official HTC One Thread***

Very nice

Screen brightness?

had to check what screen brightness I was on and its around 35% I guess (my room is quite dark), its higher when I'm out. I'm using a custom rom which has the cm brightness mod so I usually adjust the screen brightness by swiping the top of the Notification bar, also the rom gives me the option to get rid of the 3 dot menu and have a percentage on my battery icon.

Nope! I saw it as well. Oh my HTC are really stepping it up! And about time too! :)

Yep. But stupid HTC showing off only 1 single feature of the phone :-/ I wonder how many people even know that it exists? It's arguably one of the best looking /designed phones ever made- show off the damn phone!!!

Very nice then wingz, this is why I always take 'expert' reviews with a pinch of salt when it comes to battery life as they never relate to real world usage.

How is your signal strength generally?

Didn't see the ad, but hopefully they will have it shown on a more frequent basis and not just for a month or two :p

Maybe a stupid question but is the fast shutter slow motion camera facility on the sg4 software or hardware dependant? if this could be aquired on the One I would be very happy.

HTC have had those since sense v4/one s, X etc. :p as well as a ton of other things.

And the one does as well.

AFAIK the gs 4 doesn't have slow motion recording, only samsung phone that does is the note ii. Don't know what the shutter speed is like for the gs 4, but with the one series phone it is instant, slightly quicker than the gs 3 from my experience.

Not too good, 2-3 bars in my bedroom. When the phone is on standby it never gets awaken which is good, meaning my battery doesn't consume much power during standby.

I get excellent HSDPA speeds when I'm, out and about.

Bah, Orange didn't get my One's to me today - to be fair, it's UK Mails fault. Will be Monday now. :(

Stuck with my Sensation for another weekend!!! Actually, there's nothing wrong with it and the wife is having it as a free upgrade from her Desire, but damn it, I want my ONE!

What deals are people getting with Orange? Going to give them a call tomorrow, hoping to get something decent from detentions/cancellations....

gsmarena's review is up

Were fairly harsh on it but then they usually are on quite a lot of phones for no reason......

Main disadvantage

  • 4MP camera has disappointing performance in good lighting conditions
  • Non-expandable storage
  • Awkwardly-placed and uncomfortable power button
  • Senes UI still lacks connectivity toggles in notification area
  • Non user-replaceable battery
  • Poor video and audio codec support out of box

My one s works great with pretty much every file I have thrown at it using the stock player so wonder if they have lost the codecs etc. with sense V5?

They really do seem to nit pick and change their minds constantly as they didn't mention any problems with the lack of toggles in the X/S, dna etc. reviews and they actually liked the camera ui etc. on those and never mentioned about the power/lock button being a disadvantage etc.

So essentially only 4 disadvantages (the rest can be easily fixed) of which 3 come down to preference.

Only deal breaker in that list for me is the camera, I hope it can be tweaked with software like we have seen happen on previous phones. Shame they couldn't squeeze in 8 ultra pixels :p

Another issue with the One X was Tegra

I really hope it is only a software issue too but I have a funny feeling that it could be hardware related as well :(

We received our new model this weekend and put it through the same tests as last week. The results are undeniably better and the HTC One compares better to the competition than we initially believed. If you look at the photos in the Face-Off, the images are sharper, the white balance is more neutral and the pictures are generally brighter and better-looking than the ones we took last week. That said, it's still 4 Mpx, so any photos taken on the HTC One still lack detail compared to its biggest competitors, and always will.

Wingz - That is some battery magic right there.
For some reason I'm against the flock and really like the all black version. Hurry up and get in stock somewhere dammit!

The main problem with having a power button on the side is you either switch the phone off accidentally whilst trying to adjust the volume on a video or if you are a leftie it's just plain awkward.

There's no ideal I can think of that would solve all problems with button placement.

I'm finding the camera pretty good, especially in low light. Most of my shots are indoors so it's pretty good for me, just about every other phone I've had has been next to useless after dusk.

Am going to head off out this afternoon - see if I can't pick up a silver One! Anyone know if P4U shops actually have stock at all or is it just their warehouse?

Just their warehouse, there's little if any stock in any of the P4U shops.

Best bet is to order online you should have it by Tues if all goes well.

That's the thing, gsmarena must have had a faulty "one" as in their audio test, the audio wasn't that loud at all, yet pretty much every other review has said the speakers are too loud even on the lowest volume and people who have a GS 3, note II or one S/X have said the one is much louder, hopefully they will get another review sample and update their review, I also love how they didn't really mention anything about boomsound/front speakers and the advantage of that, it is only one of the main unique selling points compared to every other phone......

BTW looks like different displays are being used, taken from xda:

HTC seems to have different models with different screen brightness and as a result also different battery life!

I did some research and it now seems pretty clear that HTC is using two different screen types in the One, just like it did use both Acer and Sharp in the One X. The Sharp had the higher brightness and higher color temperature.

The same pattern can be observed for the One so far:
- 26.02.2013 RUS 3dnews.ru: 382cd/m² and 1,258:1 contrast | 6,938K color temperature
- 14.03.2013 GBR uk.hardware.info: 426cd/m² brightness | 977:1 contrast | 7,820K color temperature
- 14.03.2013 NLD Tweakers.net: 489cd/m² | 1159:1 contrast | 8,166 color temperature
- 19.03.2013 DEU Notebookjournal: 385cd/m² and 1100:1 contrast
- 20.03.2013 DEU Computerbase.de: 483cd/m² brightness | 1100:1 contrast | 6,600K color temperature
- 20.03.2013 GBR pcpro: 481cd/m² brightness | 1202:1 contrast
- 20.03.2013 DEU Chip.de: 479cd/m² brightness | 1020:1 contrast
- 23.03.2013 USA GSMArena: 647cd/m² brightness | 1541:1 contrast

As can be seen. there doesn't seem to be any pattern in terms of date or market so far, with both screen versions appearing in German reviews. Perhaps because of the Apple competition in the U.S., the screen in the US review gets higher brightness.

So this also explains why battery tests have been a mixed bag. It will depend a lot on the maximum brightness of the screen on your specific HTC One version!

Love that new slow motion editing feature! Will be extremely useful
