***The Official HTC One Thread***

Meaning that I can transfer photos, music and files very quickly between my phone and PC without needing a cable,

I've not transfered anything to my phones via cable for years - it's all over wifi now. There are some great apps out there to do this.

Upgrade due this Sunday for me - it's going to be a very long week! I really want a black One but they aren't in stock yet, my impatience will probably get the better of me and I'll settle for a silver One.

Doesn't using a different launcher mean you loose some of the sense functionality & kinda defeat the whole point of having a HTC?

Only what you get with the app drawer and home screens. Everything else sense related will still be there and work.

Imo there is nothing special/unique about the sense launcher except blink feed, in fact, no oem launcher is that good when compared to the like of nova etc.

The rest of sense I love though, apps look great, best unified feel throughout, feature full especially the camera and gallery app and it is fast/smooth.

EDIT:

About damn time!

HTC to retire 'quietly brilliant' tagline as marketing strategy becomes bolder

What have I been saying since the very start? ;)

What a Difference a Firmware Update Makes

While we were halfway through reviewing the HTC One's camera, HTC called and swapped out our One with one (cough, cough) which had a firmware update for the camera. The update made a noticeable difference in the quality of the photos, as you can see for yourself below in the 100% crops. Images are sharper, with more detail. A visible softness in the upper left and bottom right corners, which we attributed to poor lens construction, has cleared up.

There's still something unusual happening with ISO 800 however. With both the older One and the One with the firmware update, image quality at ISO 800 takes a sudden dip; details are softer and the image is noisier than both ISO 400 and ISO 1600.

Unless otherwise stated, we'll be using the updated HTC One for the rest of this camera review. HTC says that the camera update will be available for the general public in April. As such, what we present you is what you can expect out of the phone, if it has been updated.

Just like the lumia 920 camera situation :p

Although it is very possible that their new one could have just had a better lens than their old one (i.e. not faulty, aligned correctly etc.) as it still doesn't explain why all the other review sites have variable results with the same software running (afaik)

Would be great if HTC sent out another unit with this "software fix" to all the other review sites in order for them to update their reviews!

better but still nothing to bang about when lumia has 8mpx.. i need to justify this phone i really want a black one.. but same as richdog can't get over the fact that it has no sd slot.. jeez all my phones since k750i had it..

:/

Definitely better after the update!

Last thing will be the difference between the battery life on this and the S4... the latter should be theoretically better.

If they had used 8MP, the pixel size would not have been as big (920 has 1.4 µm, one has 2.0 µm). This means more light is captured and so in theory, the one should be producing better photos overall with less noise/more clarity especially in low lit/night conditions.

Guess it really comes down to just how important the SD slot is in the end. For one of richdog's reasons, the best alternative is just to use USB OTG, place files on USB etc. then copy move them over that way. I just use estrongs/airdroid for transferring all my files wirelessy now, can't remember last time I actually connected my phone to my PC!

It will be interesting to see!

I would expect the GS 4 octa version to be better by a decent amount but not so sure with the s600 chipset given Samsung's previous experience with using that chipset but since 70% of the devices are using it, I would like to think that they will put more effort and time into optimising it! Between those two same versions, I think the one will be better when it comes to web browsing (SAMOLED VS LCD for whites) where as the GS 4 will be better in videos and overall GS 4 will be better, but I don't think it will be a big enough difference to worry about.....

all the pixel malarky is nice and stuff but 920 does better in low light and keeps the 8mpx resolution :o

Yes but we haven't seen what the one is really like yet :p, only seen photos from all these faulty units, be it outdated software or hardware. So until then, will not know for sure.

Also, with the one, you have a very quick shutter speed so that means that you won't capture as much light compared to the 920 (even though it should be capturing more light) since its shutter stays open for longer (I don't think you can adjust the shutter speed on the one) but as other sites have said it, that then means you have camera shake. Hopefully htc will implement an option for this too.....

edit:

hmm just reading about the 920 and why it is good in low light, apparently it can go up to 4.9µm virtually, not sure how it works exactly, probably a bit like hdr:

Essentially it seems like htc still has quite a bit to go with regards to software optimisation and getting the very best out of the camera.

Can't wait to play on mine this Thursday! The firmware update to improve the camera is good news! hopefully the update arrives at the start of April and not at the end :)

Good news re the software update, but I can't help but think that it may be hardware related too especially when the article alluded to new hardware being used in the review handset.

Will wait for more news and the initial batch to be distributed before going for the HO again. This phone is truly outstanding.

How are you "one" owners finding battery life? Screen on time (brightness), network signal strength, rough usage etc.?

Quite a few people are posting screenshots on XDA where they are getting up to 5-7 hours spread across 1-2 days  (although with no real useful info. on their usage )
