Again you're part of the problem... you're a Muslim who's not quite justifying it but trying to sympathise in part with it. Its people like you who are doing Muslims in general no favours at all. The idea that there is even a remote justification for killing a random person in the street because he might be part of an organisation that is fighting people in some other country where the population share some religious beliefs with the attackers really does take some 'special' chain of thought.

Afghanistan was under occupation before we arrived... some bearded chaps called the Taliban...

This sort of thing is going to keep on happening unless the Muslim community steps up and does more to drive out extremism. People such as yourself trying to justify it are only making the problem worse. 9/11 didn't occur because foreign lands were invaded... it occurred because the US stationed some bases in Saudi Arabia. Afghanistan got invaded as a direct result of that.
