Road Cycling Essentials

Now I've been riding a few years and my distances have changed, I was thinking of getting a new cycle computer to tell me my speed, to see if I'd slowed down or sped up. No need, I ran through two of those speed read-out cameras on the same bit of road in each direction with no cars around. 26mph and 28mph at miles 13 and 15 which I'm chuffed with, especially in this heat with a bag and D-lock on my back.

A very good day cycling!

Anyone else do this? http://app.strava.com/activities/70165453

Yeah, I did it. What kit were you wearing/bike were you on?

Got lost in the same place you did but ended up going all the way down to Nantwich before realising which was an absolute PITA. The signage for that one turn off was ****. Saw pretty much everyone miss it and be waved back in the right direction by other riders down the road. Made 102 miles into 108 with an extra 20 getting to and from the start. I'm knackered now.

Not to grumble but the course itself was pretty dull and it felt like not a lot of effort had really gone into the event itself. Maybe I'm just grumpy after being out in the sun all day. :p

I do agree with you. The course was dull. There were some nice parts, but most of it was just samey. I think I only saw Jodrell Bank at 86mi.

So that turning, the arrow was drawn on the floor right? Completely missed it!

I had a full yellow helmet on, black/white jersey. I was riding with my mate Peter Sagan. Well he looks very much like him, green/white helmet, green kit etc :) How about you?

He seems like a bit of a **** by the sounds of it!:p

Nah, he was a nice guy ;)

He's been cycling for decades. Used to be very competitive at TT, and still keeps his hand in, which I guess accounts for the weight obsession.

He said he'll come out with us again, but we'd have to have the right group with us. There's folk we ride with who'd have struggled even more than we did. It'd be no fun for them.

wow sks chromoplastic mudguards are a nightmare to install and the instructions are abysmal ....

Took me about 40 minutes to do the rear so I'll have a break before starting on the front...

it looks like it bends to one side a bit at the veryrear of the mudguard on the back as well but I think I'll just keep it off centre as I can see adjusting it being a far more complicated task than it should be

Mine is off centre, but I can't be bothered to trim the stays to get it perfect.

The effort of installing them is worthwhile, because once they're on they're not going anywhere. There's othe mudguards out there that are easier to fit, but the easier they are to fit, the easier it is for them to come loose and fall off.

There's one of those near us going down a hill. The limit is 30. The strava segment there is called "Operation turn the sign red". I have succeeded in this mission.

Ah yeah, I remember Peter Sagan. :D I actually tagged on the back of your group up to the first feed station - I was in HTC kit on my Scott, not the guy that tagged on behind but skipped the stop. School boy error not stopping in this weather imo, I was struggling for fluid by the second stop even with full bottles! I was planning on taking my turn on the front but Sagan was a beast! :D

Yeah, the arrow was drawn on the floor, it was the only junction with just a mark on the road and no signs so plenty missed it. Was a 10 mile detour for myself and plenty of others which was frustrating as I was going really well at that point. Never really ridden a century that flat before so I was curious to see how quick I could go. Got pretty frustrated after that.

It's my third sportive all up and I'm not sure how many more I'll be doing. Entry fees aren't cheap and I'd expect a bit more for my money than massively grim coffee at the start, Tesco Value flapjack and bananas. I can do that myself - except my Gaggia makes much better coffee!

That and the number of knobs they seem to attract littering gel wrappers all over the road etc. Rode with one guy who thought nothing of throwing his gel wrapper into the hedge, pressed on at that point and left him behind, just find it very disrespectful. How hard is it to put your rubbish in your pocket?!

Do some time trials!
Usually £10 entry, and there is prize money (with handicap prizes as well, not just fastest). Lots of sandwiches and cakes, which havnt all been eaten by the hundreds of people who got to the feed stop before you.
Cant guarantee a good coffee though.

That's my plan actually with a view to some bunch racing next year. I'll just make the coffee myself! :D

Having said that, Polocini Cafe near here run sportives and £15 gets you pre-ride coffee and porridge, a food stop and post ride food and drinks. That's more like it.
