The "New Gear/Willy Waving" thread

I'm tempted by that software, is it easy to use? TBH I haven't done any adjustments on my 50D since the day I got it. So the 70-200 is done only at 200mm?

Software itself is pretty easy to use and there's some features you can use for free.

The full pro product lets you have something like 15 bodies which I'll probably not need any time soon and gets the fully automated calibration (or so it's supposed to be!). I guess they'll get around to getting it work eventually but for now it requires human interaction to change the micro adjustment settings and to set a few other pre-reqs like one shot AF mode and turning off IS etc.

It can be hard to use this software if you don't have a laptop and you don't have your PC somewhere suitable though since you need some room and good light to use it.

damn, HDEW sent my 70D out by courier so didnt come today

is the yongnuo YN600EX-RT the best bang for buck flash atm?
and is ebay the place to get it?

seen it for £99 from a seller with 48k feedback

Think it's about as good as it gets tbh unless you want to buy the proper Canon version for 3-4x the price.

It's my first flash and I bought it with a YN E3 RT controller and it's been good when I've used it :) Can't say I've done too much so far but I had fun with it on New Years Eve :D

£99 sounds like a decent price compared to what mine was as they were initially released but don't know if that's the cheapest.

Oh, best get yourself some batteries! Panasonic Eneloops seem to be what's recommended if you want rechargeables :) They were made by Sanyo until Panasonic bought Sanyo if you happen to look on the Rainforest and wonder why there's two brands making them.

yep, my first flash too. and no, no way im buying the canon version!
yeah when i was looking think it was shy of 200?

good point on the batteries. im guessing it chews through them?

ill think about the controller
is the controller a requirement if you want to use the flash off camera?

i havent really ever used the flash on my camera. Its not useful for macro, and the few times it is, i always can see that horrible obvious flash look

Yeah I never used my onboard flash much since it always came out quite harsh but the off camera flash is much easier to get half decent results. With a bit of practise you can get a lot more out of it but it was pretty easy to pick up tbh.

Yes, the controller is required if you want the flash off the camera which can be handy. You can redirect the flash a little when it's on the camera but you can bounce it at many more different angles if it's off obviously :)

It's not too bad on batteries but you don't want to try and do a whole evening on one set of batteries hehe. There's 4xAA in the flash so you need a decent amount to last the evening.

A few rechargeables is nice since you can re-use but for a wedding you might be better off just buying a massive pack of batteries from Maplins or something to burn through.

I definitely intend on using the flash with the controller for some macro this summer :)

I know you can get some pretty hefty rechargeable ones now.
But dunno how often I will actually use it.

Well have a look for the flash and controller

For the macro I kind of want the twin flash. But yet to decide on that or what is the best macro flash option

Well it you look around, you'll see some pretty good home made macro setups with regular flashes :) Obviously if you've got two flashes then you can have a twin setup :D

Yeah the variety is quite amazing.
One thing I don't want is the whole thing to be too damn heavy.
Summer (and bugs) are almost here! Time to get a move on with a macro flash setup

New goodies arrived for the D750! Very impressed with the 2 minute of use the controller has had. A million times better than my pocketwizard AC3 + FlexTTL setup I had on the canon (which cost £300 I might add!!).

£483 in total, 4 transmitters, 1 LCD controller and 4x YN568EX flashes :D

First wedding in 3 weeks with the Nikons, not used them anywhere near enough yet!

Last delivery just now... the EF 20-35 f3.5-4.5 USM. A perculiar lens, but seems decent for messing around with wide angles.

Won't be purchasing anything else for a while. Need to get shooting now.

Made the switch from Canon :)

Great choice in Camera :)

Thanks :)

Very nice, what made you change and what did you come from?

What made you change to Nikon given the recent announcement and relatively close availability of the new 5D?

I came from a 400D. I've been using it for 6 years, cutting my teeth and learning about the technical side more than the creative side of photography. I've been mentored by my best mate who is a Nikon man, so I've been very lucky to get a feel of the pro/flagship models.

Last year I was asked to take some photos of pedigree dogs for the Royal Canin Dog World Annual. I used the 5D mk3 (belongs to gf's mum, unused, gathering dust, the camera that is..:D), felt great and was immediately at home with it, even though I had no practice beforehand, the shots came out well and had a few published. Was well chuffed!

It was at that point I knew I'd outgrown my 400D and needed to upgrade, the thing is, even tho I had a play with the 5D mk3 and felt at home with it, I've always preferred Nikon!! Can't put my finger on it why, I just prefer them. (I guess seeing the results from my mates swayed me too.)

Yes there's a new Canon coming out soon, then there will be a new Nikon, then Sony, then Pentax, olympus etc etc. You just have to take that leap when it comes to tech.

I still only consider myself an amateur/enthusiast photographer, but I hope to contribute a bit more in this forum as my confidence grows (and lens collection) :)

/thumbsup.

Fair enough - not the massive lens swapover then as I'd assumed :)

I like the D800... but I have a similar feeling as you, only I came to the opposite conclusion. I actually prefer Canon, in general :o

I prefer the feel / general use of the 5D3 but knew Canon would be releasing something new within the following 3-9 months so didn't much feel like getting a 5D3 with that knowledge.

Ended up picking up a D800 for a really good price 1-2 months before the D810 came out... and only got a relatively small number of lenses with good re-sale value so I could make the switch relatively painlessly when the new Canon comes out.

I (and others) think I have a reasonably good eye for photography, but I'm no pro so probably won't be getting the most out of any of these cameras any time soon... only my uncle is a pro, so I know the difference & don't like making trade-offs if I can avoid it.

I am still wishing I had a 5D3 lol... I went with the D800 because the deal was too good to miss... oh well... might have some good glass to sell in a couple of months ;)
