The MSI Neo2 Platinum Owners Help Thread

Of course its something for this thread, its the motherboard type hes tryin to install with isnt it?

Anyway, as I said you need to install the SATA first or you wont be able to boot from SATA. You prolly can do it the other way but this is the way I've found easiest and that works on my setups. Just my 2 bob.

Soz - sounded more of a generic "How do I multi-boot" question. :) I still answered him though. :p

i have managed to install windows 64 now i know i saw a msi live update 64 bit but cant seem to find it....aghhhh.

I have just bought s939 3500+ winnie and already have 1Gb of Geil value does anyone if this ram works reasonably with this board?

Not had any problem with my Geil value RAM... :D

Thanks I'm considering getting this board just wanted to check it's compatable with my ram (as my a7v600x is picky)

but is the board relaible as the length of this thread means it is either v.good or a lot of people have problems with it, what would you guys suggests?

Not meaning to be cheeky, but if you'd read the thread contents then you might get a fair idea! :p

I love this board, when I have one! I've had two so far and I am still without my third replacement, but when it runs IT RUNS!

Honestly, this board gave me the fastest most fluent feeling computer experience I've ever had and well games, jeez, I can finally run Doom3 at my TFT's native res of 1280x1024 with a smooth framerate. The same GFX hardware, CPU, HDDs and RAM were all employed in an Asus A8V and it could only really run it smoothly at 800x600, SERIOUSLY! 1024x768 was glitchy and don't even mention 1280x1024!

But now w00t, :D well as soon as I get my replacement anyway!

Cheers for that m8 was a bit too lazy to read through the whole 32 pages. I'm gonna order now :)

Yeah - another vote for "a darn fine board". Definately worth giving the thread a bit of a read though. Look for the notes about:
  • Put your SATA drives on port 3 and 4 if overclocking. Port 1 and 2 are not locked so overclock at the same time.
  • For dual channel use different coloured memory sockets. (My Geil is in slot 1 and slot 2)
  • If overclocking, don't use Cool 'n' Quiet.
  • Also don't overclock with the "CoreCentre" software as it sometimes locks up. Overclock the old fashioned way using the BIOS.
  • Decent PSU required with at least 20A on the 12volt rail. (Though my system is working with this Thermaltake PSU which only has 18A on 12volt. Quality is important :))
  • A link to the MSI Downloads Page. I bought my board a coulpe of months back now, and it turned up with the latest official BIOS (v1.5). There is a v1.6 in existance, but doesn't seem to of had an official release yet.
  • I used the latest nVidia chipset drivers, v5.10, from www.nvidia.com as the MSI ones were out of date.
So I have just saved you from having to read the thread now. That covers most of the important stuff, ya lazy git. :D You now owe me a beer :D

P.S. There is also another good reason for the length of the thread, it was started in August 2004!!

Board _should_ arrive tomorrow.

Anyone know any good faqs on it?

I'd like to say I'd read this whole topic for gems of wisdom, but since it dates back to August, and it's 23 pages long, trying to assimilate the whole thing, when I don't know what's out of date by BIOS fixes is a bit of a scary topic.

I do know that it won't like overclocking with my SD 3700+ until a new BIOS comes out - it might default to 2T and refuse to post/boot/stable with 1T.

And also that only two of the SATA ports are properly locked - so don't use the others! (Sick of SATA corrpution with my NF7-S....)

My SATA raid0 array will be binned and overwritten, so hopefully I won't have issues there...

Anyway, I'm not really looking for specifics, but looking for a few good links for this board if any exist.

At some point I'll read the entire thread, just trying to get as much covered as I can before the board arrives... I've the whole watercooling to deconstruct and reconstruct, so I'll have my work cut out tomorrow assuming 3 different orders from 3 different places all arrive!

LOL - Halk, I think I just answered many of your questions while you were busy typing. Look up at the previous post :D

Yes, yes you did!

I didn't even check to see if anybody had posted between me starting to type and finishing (got loads on the boil atm, downloading drivers etc) so if you hadn't replied, I'd never have seen your post! Thanks!

Hopefully although my board is second hand, it's an unused RMA, so it will have latest BIOS on it, which might avoid problems with bluescreening during XP setup etc. Going to put on really slack timings till I get it stable and booting though.

I take it I will need a drivers disk for SATA? I've got the drivers, but not sure if they are required in order to get XP setup to even see the drives, or if they are just enhancements. Reason I ask is my NF7-S refuses to talk to my floppy drive (yes I have checked to make sure the cable is in the right way up!) so I'll have to slipstream the drivers onto an XP install, which is more hassle, that if I can avoid it'll be spanky.

SATA on only 2 ports - check! I have a SATA card for an additional 2 ports - will that be locked properly if I lock the PCI? And any ideas if they will lock the other 2 ports with a later BIOS?
Dual channel slots - check! Already seen on their site some colour coded thing I'll work out tomorrow when I can actually see the board.
Cool n quiet? - Nope! Watercooled, which means cool n quiet anyway :P
Software overclocking? Never trusted it!
Decent PSU - Antec with 28A on the +12v rail - Check!
MSi downloads - Check! Nice and fast compared to Abit, already downloaded everything
5.10 drivers - Check! Already downloaded em direct from nVidia.

You buy second hand RMA'd kit? Well, good luck. There have been a noticable number of reports of duff MSI board, so hopefully you are lucky with a good one there. If BIOS is 1.5, then just do your XP Install at stock settings. My SCSI kit installed everything in 10mins!! Blew me away the speed of this system :)

Don't ya have a spare floppy drive for your new system? You will get a floppy in the box with the SATA drivers on it.

Lock PCI and your card should be fine. And I doubt there will be a BIOS fix for this as it will be more about the design of the motherboard layout itself.

Be careful as there are a lot of confused people out there who think that the memory sticks should sit in the same coloured slots. I really is "slot 1 and 2" or "3 and 4" if your are installing a pair of RAM sticks.

I don't think I need to say anything else. :D See ya back in this thread when it is all up and running.....

Is "f t w" a swear word I don't know about? In the above quoted thread it is sticking stars into the middle of the word "S o f t w a r e" when it is quoted. Very bizzarre...

Edit: Even more bizzarre... now it is doing it to this post. I have had to stick spaces into the words to trick the filter....

Yeah, there's a floppy drive in the system at the moment, new this year, it did work, but now it doesn't, and until I get the new board it's not possible to tell if it's the cable, the drive or the board.

Since I've got another PC downstairs with a floppy in it I could steal I guess I could use that. And I dare say I'll have at least half a dozen floppy cables.

Yep, hopefully I'll be posting tomorrow night I'm running at 250x11 @ 30 idle, don't see it. But maybe, just maybe, I'll get it running stable, and on the net by then :)
