The MSI Neo2 Platinum Owners Help Thread

I think you are right.... locked my system up a treat when I tried it out.

Trying absolutely anything at all with NF7-S overclocking locked mine up instantly.

Besides, you know exactly where you are with doing it on the BIOS, it's all there in nice, reassuring DOS5.0 like text.

DOS 5.0? I first saw that text back to my old BBC Micro (and earlier) as it looks like MODE7 (or classic Teletext) :)

One of these days I'll bring out my old BBC B :)

Actually BIOS text looks quite like my old CPC, as some of it is yellow on blue.

Ahhhh... those were the days, CPC... 8mhz (I think?) (Oops, 4.7 really)

Do you think we are going a little off topic here..... LOL :) See ya here in the next few weeks as you post up the results of your overclock. :)

A little. Yes. :)

Thanks again for the information though, extremely helpful.

As for the RMA/second hand... Was bought on the members market, it's brand new and sealed, so I don't expect it to be any different to one I'd bought from a retailer. Guy I bought it off has been pretty good about it too with good trust, so I'm not anticipating any second hand, or B-grade type problems (fingers crossed).

MAllen cheers for that ;), also I got my board 'B' grade from OcUK for £50, it should be ok, they do test them don't they?

Quick question, if I have to, where would I pick up a spare IO shield/plate thing?

Edit : No need. On it's way to me now :)

Thanks just needed to hear that after...

That's my psychic hat on :D
You buy second hand RMA'd kit? Well, good luck. There have been a noticable number of reports of duff MSI board

You've put my mind at rest now I can't wait for my new board :D

I bought my baby from MM as well and the person I bought off it has slated MY board(as It's mine now) in this very thread as well as a few others.I love this board. Its solid. It's a bit like the old marmite thing. You either love it or hate it.!!! I've had no problems whatsoever with this board so far.My only gripe is that you cant unlock the multipliers like the old Nforce 2's.I have a 0448 spaw 3000+ winnie and cos of the pooh 9x multiplier I'm gonna have to fork out for some decent ram to get to the 2.7g this cpu can do.It's a great board. As for the abit's ;) and the dfi's.Look to see how many threads there are with people who are having problems with their boards compared to this. ;)

Hopefully somebody can help me...

Finally got everything put together and I cross my fingers and turn it on, it won't post :(

There's some lights appearing at the back, it goes all red, then one green light, then the green light moves... which follows the steps shown in the manual.

Then it should start decompressing the BIOS image, apparently. But it doesn't.

Instead I get 2 red lights diagonally opposite each other and 2 green lights. I believe lights 2 and 3 are red. 1 and 4 green.

When I was fitting the block to the graphics card there was a "crack" sound... I'm a little concerned I've borked the graphics card, as a new one is going to be expensive.

Edit : Some more information.

I've tried different memory configurations, down to just 1 DIMM atm. At some point I did get the long beep when I tried to boot, indidcating memory problems, but I'm not getting that any more. Tried ballistix PC4000 and an old stick of Twinmos PC3200 (not bh5).

There's no beeps to indicate a graphics card problem, but does that mean it cannot possibly be a graphics card problem?

I've just looked in the manual and the code you described and the code you described is 'Bios Sign On', that means that motherboard should start to post, it looks like your board might be a dud

ps someone please correct me if I'm wrong

Further to that, it won't even turn on now, I have to cross a wire on the ATX supply (i.e. skip the motherboard completely)

*sigh* This is turning in to a nightmare!

The best option is probably to try to test each part individually if you can, and then you can determin whether or not it is the mobo.

Halk - ouch!: Take everything out of the board and see if anything happens. i.e. boot without RAM, Video cards, drives etc. This should cause some BIOS beeps of some form.

If you have spare video cards or RAM (no matter how old) then try these out. It's going to be a game of trial and error to spot the bad part.

If you track back in this thread you'll see I also had initial setup problems, but these were traced to a dodgy P4 12v connector on my PSU.

Also go and find a mate who can plug your graphics card into his board and check if it will boot. I assume nothing is coming up on your screen yet? Not even a VGA BIOS readout?

Edit: Maybe two lessons learnt... one is "why is this kit cheaper than normal?" and the other is "be very gentle and patient installing expensive kit". Ouch!! I just noticed you posted at 5am!! Not a good time to be trying to build a PC. Unless you are a Vampire and never come out in the daytime....

Well, the PSU worked fine yesterday... and I've never had any issues with it at all. It's an Antec TrueBlue 480W.

It did power on last night... but stuck as I said. Today it won't power on at all. That's with and without the graphics card, IDE cables, SATA cables, PCI cards, memory. - It does power on if I connect the little bridge thing across the 20 pin thing - it's used so you can get your watercooling running without the board running. So from that it would appear the board is dead.

I can't be bothered waiting weeks while the board gets replaced...so...

I've gone and ordered a Fatal1ty motherboard, and a new PCI-E 6800 card, along with a new PSU. I was going to do this at some point anyway, but having a credit card and no PC makes you a bit shophappy :) (When I say no PC I'm excluding this old heap I'm using just now as a backup)

Didn't take the DFI nf4 board because of the way it's laid out, there's no way the watercooling blocks will fit on that.

When the new kit arrives I'll have 2 of everything apart from CPU. So I'll be able to find out exactly what's bust and what isn't.

Edit : As for being gentle... yep I was, but after an hour spent trying to get the graphics block on... well, things happen :)

I think it's very unlikely that the guy sent me a dodgy board on purpose. He's got very good trust, and the board was sealed. It was an RMA, but when I took off the chipset cooler there was a little dust there, so it's been used at some point, sent back to MSI and they've refurbished it, or found it's fine - or just stuck it in a bag and sent it back out.

What I should have done was install the whole thing without watercooling, but that would have meant a whole lot more time - i.e. break it down, put it together, test it, break it down, put it together...

So for now I'll just break it down again completely, and wait on the new board coming, so I can hopefully just put it in and it'll work. I won't fit the graphics block until I know it's all working, because it's quite an operation.

LOL. Credit cards are evil. When my build didn't happen first time, I also shot out and spent £55 on a PSU that I didn't really need.

At least you can just flog all that spare kit afterwards...... but it does make you wonder why the guy who sold you the board had never opened the box himself. Maybe he is a self generating static machine who can zap boards from a distance....

It's just "Sod's Law of Computing". I build and fix PCs for a living. And it was just so frustrating that when it came to building my own new PC I ended up with bizzare problems.

Have you been out kicking Black Cats or anything else as unlucky?

Well, the guy sold me it as an RMA. I can only assume he bought a new board when that wasn't working, and when the RMA replacement arrived he sold it on.

And yeah, I'll sell whatever I can be sure is working and spare afterwards.

Just an annoyance really not having a real PC and only having dial up.
