The MSI Neo2 Platinum Owners Help Thread

Similar quandary mate. I thought I'd upgrade on a budget that didn't stretch to a new GFX card, so I bought a CPU, a Mobo and some RAM with the only AGP nForce3 skt939 board I could find. I wasn't aware they were forcing us to go PCI-E already!

I just got this board and so far it seems like a solid board.I've had no problems setting it up at all.I also got hold of a A64 3000+ 0448 spaw winnie cpu.Its been running smoothly for the last couple of days at 9x268 at 1.4v.I got a xp-90 on it and its stays a nice 37 degs idle and about 42 degs full load.I'm sure this chips got a lot left in it but I think my cheapo ram is at its limit.Cpu-z states its running at 219fsb.Is there anyway I can get higher multi's with a A64 3000+ cpu? I don't even know what rev bios its running yet.
Any advice on how to get my cpu a little higher would be muchly appreciated..:)

Can anyone tell me please if the Cool & Quiet program actually works properly for them, or is there problems known?

No, the maximum is 9. But if you go into the overclocking options in BIOS, then go into the DRAM options, then you can lower 'Max Memspeed' or something like that, which makes your RAM run slower.

Elsewhere in this thread will mention problems about it when overclocking. i.e. it only really wants to work at default I believe. (This is all second hand info as I have not experienced problems)

Thanks m8
I thought I'd have to do something like that :(
It's running smooth at 9x278 =2.5g mem 10-3-3-2.5 1t 4xHT.Cpu-z mem is 229mhz now :) I've only had this pc running for 48 hrs so I'm happy at 2.5g on air.I'll let the AS5 settle in a little before trying any higher.
Is MBM 5's temp readings true?I had the MSI thing installed and that was always 2degs higher than MBM's temp.

Hi all

Just got one of these boards and a 3500 Winny  I've been reading through this huge thread and it's been v.useful :)

So far I'm running 228 x 11 = 2508 mhz & 1T 2.5-4-4-8 timings with Corsair XMS4400 ram. It's extremely quick, destroying my old P4 3.6 in various benchmarks and games :D

Just got to order some AS5 to put on the AC Freezer 64 & the NB etc.

3DMark01 27032
3DMark03 12888
3DMark05 6141
PCMark04 5160

For those of you who just cant get this thing stable - i would recommend the Abit AV8 Motherboard. I wish i had gone for this in the first place the features are awsome.

You can be playing a game, then hit a button on you 3rd Eye screen and it will instantly overcock your system to predefined settings.

If the Neo works for you great. If not this board is an option it has fixed all of my neo problems!

had my neo 2 for about 2 months now... board has been solid.. only problem had was my OCZ 4000 VX blew on me after 4 days but just replaced that with some GSkill 4400 LE and its now running at 2.77gb.. not bad for the worst week 3500+ u can get :)

I am using a seagate sata HD initially on sata1 as doing a fresh install today. Should I enable SATA1/SATA2 DMA Transfer? Does it make any difference and more importantly will it effect stability with this board? Any suggestions appreciated. D.

Always emanble DMA transfers when you see them. The only thing that wouldn't understand that would be an ancient hard drive from the 90's. And that wouldn't be big enough to fit XP on... LOL.

So yeah - turn it on for the full speed of transfers.

Yes thats true, lol. I just want to check and see if everyone has enabled this feature, and if so has it caused them any problems? At present I have not enabled it but at moment still installing xp. If its benefical will change it at next re-boot.

You should have turned it on before you started the install. You would have noticed the difference in speed. I once installed a system on a new drive and couldn't work out why it seemed slow. Then noticed in the BIOS that the defaults were not using 32-bit addressing. Too many BIOSes err on the side of the older standards and leave things slower than they should be. Always worth a good investigation around the BIOS. If ya don't know what the bits mean - do some research http://www.rojakpot.com/

(Though what is SCSI man doing sitting here talking about IDE....)

Ive got 2x256 & 1x512 LLPT memory sticks that i used to use in my Nforce2 in duel channel.

I cant get it to boot (memory error on LED's) with 1Gb of ram in it in any combination, im sure ive tried them all!

Does anyone have any info on this, i dont want to have to buy more ram, why doesnt it just boot in single channel if nothing else?

Neo2's wont work with that 2x256 and 1x512 combo unfortunately. You'l have to get 2x512 to get a gig working

BIOS wouldn't care about dual booting. It all comes down to the boot loader. You will have to give it the correct settings during the installation process. As it is not a "standard" thing to do you may need to read up on the MS Support site to find out how to change the default install paths to allow this to happen. (Or install to a different physical hard drive)

i want to install to my caviar on ide the bios settings are a bit new to me i have actually managed it several months ago but forgot how with this bios lol...

To get this to work mate, you need to install the OS of yer choosing onto the SATA array first, with RAID enabled in the BIOS whether you are using it or not. This is important cos if you dont then you wont be able to in the future if you set the board up for IDE boot.

Then, after you've installed the OS on SATA, you can them go about your way of putting x64 on the IDE because this will create the multi boot parameters you require. It will involve you having to choose an OS at boot time but this is a small price to pay. Also when its all finished, you can reconfigure the boot.ini file in your SATA root directory so that you can boot from the IDE drive by default, which I assume you might want to do.

Not really something for this thread... but...

Make sure drive is set to Master. Attach it to an IDE lead. (Obviously with the mains lead removed from motherboard). In BIOS, all you need to do is hunt down anything with the words "IDE" in it and turn it back on. Make sure UDMA is turned on. And everything else should be automatic.

When booting the PC, check to see if the drive is detected. (Press the <Pause> button on your keyboard if the screen flashes by too fast. <ENTER> will unpause it.)

You may need to change your boot order. Again this should be fairly straight forward once the drive is plugged in.
