The MSI Neo2 Platinum Owners Help Thread

You must admit though that its incredibly bizzarre noting the fact that the PCI bus is locked and SATAs 3&4 are locked. Its not like they are using different controllers or anything.

Those two ports could be directly interfaced with NB rather than onto the PCI bus first so that overclocking the FSB will also overclock that specific pair of ports as a consequence.

As Jokester says, there are lots of very logical reasons why the circuit board is designed with the layout we have. It ain't gonna be a simple BIOS change, it's going to be permanent in them traces.

I don't understand your problem Joey. Why can't you "afford" to RMA the board? Surely if the board is faulty, then the supplier should sort it out for you. Especially as it is a replacement anyway - that implies that they have replaced it with another duff one. Getting two duff boards is pretty unlucky - but definately something to hassle the supplier over.

I just got made redundant and havent had any money for about a month now. Totally ridiculous! I will hassle as I do believe that this was sent to me with the thoughts of "Ah, hes never going to use all 4 SATA ports!"

[EDIT] I just thought of something, are the IDE ports affected in the same way as SATAs 1&2? If not, then how come the Northbridge affects the SATAs and not these?

Right, I know everyone goes on about the SATA 1&2 not being locked. How is this possible and is there a way around it to OC a system with more than 2 SATA drives in it?

If it requires a BIOS flash then lets all shout at MSI!

The reason I'm asking is that I got my replacement board thru and SATA 3 doesn't work and I just bought a week 46 oem 3200+ from OcUK and was hoping to OC my system. However, if this not possible then I'm at a loss as I cannot afford to reRMA the board.
i had problem with mine where SATA 3 wouldnt work, heres how i sorted it:

boot into windows, goto Nvidia website, dload latest NF3 chipset drivers, install them, the switch off, change to SATA 3 and it should boot

drivers from MSI site didnt help but direct ones from Nvidia did, when ever i tried booting before then it would lock up on loading windows as drivers werent right (mobo has latest bios and sata bios)

Bugger.... board is dead.

Bought in January and apart from its well-known 'features' it has been working sound. A couple of weeks ago I started to have USB issues (mouse and kb not working at windows logon) and then a few days ago I powered on to hear one long beep every 4 secs.

I've swapped out everything to be 100% thorough (I hope!), cmos reset, tested out of case etc and the poor board just wont post. I've had so many other technology problems this week it's untrue :)

Any possibility that they are related? Maybe the local electicity company ****** up and sent out too high a voltage. I know that the power in Brighton is often up and down. Usually goes low enough for my UPS to kick in at least once a week.

Do you use Surge Surpressors? If not - go and buy some. Worth the investment. :)

Cheers

@ IamMed: I only use the nVidia 5.10s, have done since release on my old Asus A7N8X-E, but thanks for the tip. ;)

Nah, the SATA port in question is hosed, it looks like a B-grade board that I got back as well, thermal paste on the plastic HSF retention bracket and only 1.3 BIOS! I run a Winchester chip godammit.

I did have to update the firmware on my 2 Maxtor Diamond Max 10s though so that this board could restart effectively while they are attached, how bizarre!

On another note, I don't seem to be getting notifications from the OcUK forum admins for new posts in the threads that I am subscribed to, is anyone else experiencing this?

Thanks for that but the issues have been in different areas, work etc. Home networking issues (down to software in the end), routers that dont work with games, ISP issue with a mates connection that I've spent ages on.... bleh! Sometimes feel like moving to the country and giving it all up :)

Ive just flashed to the latest official 1.5 bios but the option for 1T timing is gone! where is it, or do i need to flash back? (In the cell menu under dram there is no longer the option!)

First, try resetting the BIOS using the jumper above your PCI slots (switch it to the second row of pins for about 5 seconds, and back again). If that doesn't work, then upgrade to BIOS v1.6 and reset the jumper again.

The 1T setting has remained visible to me in every BIOS version I've tried.

That will just make it even harder to get online via ADSL. A lot of the countyside is still using Pigeon Power. :D

So what's the news on the new 1.6 BIOS then? Anything exiting on it?

looks like my board needs RMA already, only had it a month and this was a replacement, when i had mine it had bios version 1.0!!!!!!!!

winchester wont run stable even with 1.5 bios, and seems my sata controller is dead, i seriously hate this board, nice features, nice clocks, but for me, totally unreliable, ive hardly ran it overclocked and its dead within a month, i meen ffs i ran nf7-s heavily clocked for 18mths before it packed in!!

hmm, board isnt dead after all :)
Ordered a DFI board and its does the same thing, heh. I'm going to go lie down a for a while

I never asked exactly what u meant about this (damn my psychotic brain). How would putting drivers in allow the SATA port to become 'alive'? Also, I'm not trying to boot off the SATA, I'm still using PATA for that. Was your SATA port 3 absolutely not picking any drives attached to it (like mine) or were u able to detect drives on it but just not boot from them?

basically with the newer bios the drivers i had from msi didnt fully support ports 3 and 4, needed ones from nvidia to get it running at all

Ahh, so overall it wasn't really a physical problem with yer SATA3. The thing is, my SATA4 is perfect, so its more likely that its goosed. My SATA 3 doesn't pick up on the POST, but SATA 4 will no problem and I've verified that its not the cables or the drives.

I only hope OcUK would hurry up with my CPU, I paid for it a week ago when they were 'in stock', otherwise I need to keep ripping the CPU out this machine to test new ideas from you wonderful lot. :D ;)

well i wont have any probs with neo2 soon, its being rma'd or binned lol
cant use any sata port now, and cant run a winchester properly so its bye bye

wish dfi would pull there finger out, would try and wait another week or two before sending board off if i knew there agp 939 board was coming out, still no concrete dates though :(
