Medieval 2 total war thread

Taken it back! For those who have Rome Total War dont bother. It's basically just an upgraded graphics engine and a slightly modified campaign map.

The AI is just as poor as it was in Rome. Cavalry still cant mow down routing men without running to them, running away, running to them, etc. When the AI attacks my castles it does so with all cavalry on numerous occassions. They cant scale the walls so just sit outside the castle. I move archers within range and just mow them all down and they just sit there!!

If they had improved the AI for this release it would be worth it as Rome was good apart from the poor AI. But alas they just reskinned the original :(

That's absolute rubbish I'm afraid. This game is so superior to the others in every way, you just didnt give it enough time. As Zip states, you should have waited for the first patch, which will fix a lot of the issues you have mentioned.

I've played RTW for thousands of hours and even with the enormous Realism Mod, MTWII is still a better product, even without a patch.

It is very similar to Rome, but FAR more addictive. The AI is utterly abysmal in places but they have improved it in other ways too. I'm enjoying it much more than Rome. You should have given it a chance. I had similar thoughts when I first started playing.

On a side note... I HATE THE POPE! One of my Cardinals was made Pope (2nd time this game), and ALL but 1 of the cardinals are English too and the other Cardinal is Polish (my best allies at the mo). He's still threatening to excommunicate me. I want to destroy Portugal but I can't because whenever I try to attack their last castle I get told I'll b excommunicated.

My English Pope is in bed with them :( What a git.

Well after 10 hours of near constant combat and the death of tens of thousands, I finally completed the English Campaign. Since my last post I've faced down a Jihad, fought a twenty-battle campaign against the Mongols in Iberia, left a load in my pants when the Timurids jumped me in Jerusalem, had enough cardinals to vote my own Pope in three times running, and at one point was at war with every single faction on the map apart from Russia.

All I'll say is this - beware the Mongols and Timurids. If you can avoid them - do it. They're an absolute nightmare.

Started a new Byzantine game a few hours ago. Now that's what I call starting in a poor position! No worrying about the Pope, though, and I just let all the Crusades go past me :)

Good to hear your doing okay at least.

Currently on my English campaign Ive got money problems and the scots have some massive army which i just know is gonna be a blood bath to face.

Its not very good on the other side of the channel either, my front lines have hardly moved, infact France and HRE declared war on me and will not accept a ceasefire :(.

Very over streched right now!

I got overstretched early doors with the English, but I made a little plan, even stuck to it mostly and it worked.

When I first take over a region, I build all the money-making things I can. Forget the churches (although they're next) and military buildings - just make sure you build the roads, farming land, markets and ports (I do it in that order). Have a couple of big towns somewhere pumping out 'militia' - it has to be militia, as they can sit in your city without any upkeep - saves a bundle and if they come from one place, you don't need to be building military buildings all over the place.

If you're getting pannelled early in the game, I'd suggest starting over - try this - grab your boss in Caen and a couple other units, enough to leave Caen green and happy, and send him, with the army in Caen Province, to take Rennes. Take two or three turns to pump out some troops in London and Notts, then split your army into two and go for York and Wales at the same time. Don't assault, just sit on their bases. Five turns later you'll be a bit low in the cash, but six provinces means a lot more money to get you started.

Alternatively, I could be telling you stuff you already know, so just tell me to stick a pike in it.

Good tips, didnt know about that malitia no upkeep thing.

Its not bad enough to start over because ive just had a spot of good luck against the scotish, I pulled my army off the french land and put a half stack garrison in caen just to make sure no one could easily take it.

Both my full stack armys went to scotland and the first one took edinburgh and reinforced it, the second one went straight for the full stack army scotland had hiding in some trees, I sat near them and waited for them to attack so they moved out of the forest (hate forest fights in total war games), now that was a great blood bath battle.

The sun rises on what looks to be a big fight. The scotish had a few units which have marged with the big stack and they have lined up for the fight :)

First things first, I send out some archers to poke and prod them to make them advance.

They did a nice flanking move on both sides with there cavelry, as soon as my front line engaged in fighting they sent there horses around the sides and slammed into my infantry, so I send in my second line and really get stuck in. Also my cavelry who I was sending to intercept there flanking cavelry.

Success, the pansy scotsmen route, CUT EM DOWN LADS!

The **** just hit the fan for this routing catapult team.

Fight over, that was the bulk of the scotish army, they now have just a few units here and there which I need to mop up, England, Scotland and Wales are now secured.

Excellent pics! /\

I've only got about 60 turns to go in my English campaign. I've struggled against the Milanese and the Spanish. I grew my settlements too quick early on and didnt leave enough of a garrison to defend. The AI is actually pretty smart all things considered. I've lost Antwerp and Bruges and the Danish are now attacking my flanks. I lost three family members to the Plague and havent really been able to sort it out much since. Great first campaign however I'm loving it.

You did very well in this battle and seemed to do a lot of things right :)

There is only one thing that i can pick you up on and that is with these pictures.

If you do get the chance, try get your men right on top of the hill, it will help charging and defending and holding ground. You Will aso be able to fire into deeper lines.

Other then that you did pretty good i would say :D

Ive started converting my garrisons to militia but only some of them are running on no upkeep, not all the unit cards a blue.

Any reason?

Edit: My king just got an order to go on a crusade, then two turns later he was assasinated by the inquisitor, starting to really hate this pope thing giving me orders every 5 seconds.

They keep going herritic on me and not because im getting them to burn people either, They are just in my towns keeping my religeon up

I was Allied with the Scottish but then the stupid fools decided to betray me and start a block aid, We were being very nice to each other and all and they just came out of no where and made a block aid and went enemy

Im going to have to remove those ungreatfull and untrustworthy Gits just as soon as i take wales.

Only just started this and when i was loading it i thought to my self "im only gonna play half an hour" Then while playing it i just kept thinking to my self "Just one more turn, Just one my turn, Just one more turn" And now its 3:30 and ive just played it for about 2 hours

They havnt got over ot scandinavia have they?

The sooner the untrusting skirt wearers are eliminated the better :p

Nah on my game there just in scotland, they took Ireland from the rebals and managed to make an army in the 10 turn ceasefire order I got from the pope, took it out and then took the town, faction dead :)

I got lucky with the Scots, they got repulsed from Inverness and my spy opened Edinburgh's gates. I destroyed the reinforcing half-stack as it bee-lined for the gate, and there was only the faction leader and a light infantry unit inside the city - Faction Destroyed!

Playing on M/M and it's been fairly easy so far, killed France and I'm rolling east through the Danes, HRE and Milanese on the mainland, and taken Antioch and Jerusalem on crusades. The pope's one of my cardinals now so he's not too bothered I'm fighting 3 other Catholic factions, but I wish he'd declare open season on one of them by excommunicating them. Up to 30 provinces now :).

It is "reasonably" easy at M/M unless you let the AI grow and diversify. The musket men and the culverins are impressive, especially when they upgrade their armour and skills.
