***The Official LG Nexus 4 Thread***

Am going to root and install Paranoid Android ROM using the Nexus 4 toolkit.

Hopefully it won't be a painful process.

Shouldn't be, that said I would suggest that using adb and fastboot manually might actually be easier. Found that the toolkits did most of the work for you but when they failed, I just had to do things manually. Also found their instructions were a bit obscure. This said, you've probably done it now so no worries :D

I'm presuming that I'm not the only one who has found that over Wi-Fi notifications don't appear to come through frequently? Turning off Wi-Fi Optimisation doesn't sort the problem, so I think we have a bit of a bug here.

Just installed Paranoid Android 3 ROM.

Unbelievable on how much you can customize on the ROM, it's literally quite mind boggling! It makes the N4 experience even better! Absolutely love it!

Dumb question time...

I've never rooted a phone before, just about managed to jailbreak/unlock my iPhone back in the day....

All these guides talk about unlocking (the bootloader)... I assume this isn't related to unlocking the phone so it can be used on any carrier? My Nexus 4 is already unlocked so do I need to unlock it?

Got it done without any major drama! Used the N4 toolkit which did all the work although I do agree with you that you could root / unlock the boot loader manually.

I haven't had the phone long enough to notice the Wi-Fi notification bug. Does it occur in the 4.2.2 ROM?

Bootloader is kinda self explanationary isnt it? :-) you dont need to unlock your n4 all you need to do is unlock the boatloader so you can root and install ROMs if you want too

Proc, if you turn off wifi and then turn it back on does it speed up

Just had chance to try after putting the frequency band to 2.4ghz and the speed has shot up. Gone from roughly 2mb to about 7-8mb, browsing is instant now where as before it was dog slow. So ty for posting that tip :)

anybody else using a diztronic case?

Quite a few poeple have them, and general hear positive things.

Also since going to 4.2.2 battery life is amazing, I get a good 18hour day in, 3-4hours screen time, 40mins phone calls, 7-9 hours wake time and normally 20% battery life left. Really loving it.

The bad news is I discovered that the 2.4ghz setting was a red herring. Test in a couple of hours and your speed will be down again. I am trying another theory and will post tomorrow am if it workrd or not.

In the meantime the act of turning off your phone wifi and back on will bring the speed up for 2 hours.... Very odd

yep. using the tpu case and its all good

wont protect it from drops but good enough to cover any small bumps that may occur

also it makes it easy to hold since the glass gets cold easily :D

After an overnight i am still downloading at 11 mb so I think i have it. In the thread from Google some users found in the mobile setting that an apn type had a suppl (think that was the name) - they removed the suppl one and this resolved it for them . Mine had nothing so i set this to default, mms - this is giffgaffs setting (they also had a su l which I didn't add. This seems to have solved it. Makes no sense as it is a mobile data setting.

Anyway where it is

Settings
Click the more link
Click mobile networks
Access point names

Then see what your apn type says. After changing any settings in here turn airline mode on and off and check your mobile is data is ok.

One issue I've noticed with n4 is call quality, something I think that is dismissed a lot when most people care more about the phones speed ect.

The mic seems badly placed on the back of the phone so when held to the face people can't hear you at all well, so have to speak into the phone with it held away from you" looks a bit silly"

Anyone else got call quality issues?

My wifi speed did drop again, so shall try the next tip and see how it goes.

As for call quality I find the opposite, mine is crystal clear. In fact too good sometimes as even on the lowest volume it's very loud and clear, on 3 btw.

The Microphone on mine is on the bottom, next to the USB socket!!

I have no call quality problems!, My end is crystal clear, and the people I've spoken too don't seem to complain at all (and some of them would!! ;) )

i have found the quality of the calling to be terrible, there is constant interference/buzzing, it sounds as if you are using a phone from the early 1900's. i don't know if this is the phone itself or the giff gaff network. i am guessing it is the phone because when i connect to the bluetooth head unit in my car, it is really good in terms of call quality.

Not had a problem technically with phone calls on GiffGaff myself. I tend to not get my ear in the right place on the phone when I hold it to my ear but that's just me being a tool.

i get what is most likely electronic and signal/wave interference. you can hear the sound which happens if you are receiving a call or text and your phone is near a tv or speaker. the signal interferes with the sound coming from said tv or speaker.

i also get quite a grainy audio quality in terms of the call itself, the speaker on the back of the phone is fine, it is the one on the front which has issues.

i will use my wife's phone tonight and test it out, if her call quality is better i will most likely try and RMA mine. i just assumed it was as such due to the phone being so cheap.
