Well, I love my focus but the 100bhp is not really enough so when I'm 21in a couple of months Im going to buy myself a birthday present. My car should fetch 5 grandand I could borrow upto annother 5 comfortably I reckon. even more at a little bit of a stretch but dont really want to stretch because of maintenance, unless it was a nicer car justifying keeping it an extra year for the loan. Whatever it is I want it to hold its value reasonably well so its still worth something when the finance is paid. dont mind paying upto a grand for insurance, have 4yrs NCB (hopefully). Oh and I love the idea of a convertable and dont really need 5 seats or practicality, live at home, dont av to do shopping, girlfriend will be driving hopefully by then anyway!

My options are - Clio 172/182 - rattles and build quality
-E36 M3 - maintinence costs and insurance costs
- nice S1 elise - insurance again, reliability??
- early Vx220
- Celica T-sport 190
- Mazda Mx5 - amazing in every way but not at home with the looks, bit girly.

Feel free to offer any new ideas, as you can see I'll consider anything sporty, definetly dont want a barge!

hmmm that would be very nice, love the interior. a black or blue one.... hmmm whats the service interval? I'll get my mate to service it, but is there any big money surprises before 120k. Just a cambelt i presume, what mileage? Think it would cost a lot more to run than most of my other cars but very nice....

There is no cambelt on that engine.

They also do a 323Ci if you feel the 328Ci might be a little much for somebody of 20.

Maybe the insurance company will feel the 328 is a little much for someone of 20 :p

It has a camchain then? WHen does that need changing?

I will be fine with a 328 :D
seriously though I am after something with a bit of poke, have done a few track days in cars, lots on bikes and feel I am a brisk but mature driver for my age. I have 4 years no claims, will be 21 and live in a good area so may not be too bad. have to run a quote. Would be my first rear driver though. also I bet Im looking at 25mpg ish arent I and big new rear tyres often! There are more sensible fast options, but I do like this idea!

the insurance will be pretty high on any of thouse. But they are all good cars that you'll love driving.

The elise / vx will be pretty high milage / old for the money as your looking at the low end of the market for them. As will the beemer, but they hold it allot better. The clio toyota and mazdas will all be pretty new and decent milage.

Personally i went with the mx-5 for slightly less money that your looking to spend mainly cause:
-its damn fun to drive, the handeling etc is great
-i actually quite like the looks, its modeled after classic british sports cars
-I couldn't aford a decent lotus, or the running costs tbh (even if you get a mate to do the work the parts ain't cheap, and you risk devalueing it hugely)
-in the summer the lack of roof is amazing
-in the winter the lack of rood is amazing (if a little chilly - hats for the win)
-while its not exactly overpowered its still very quick and makes up for it in the twisties (see vid posted the other day, power ain't everything by a long way)

End of the day its your call, depends what you want from the car and how much you can realistically aford to pay out a month on maintainance / fuel bills

edit: and a 200sx for that money would be one hell of a car! Mmmm, although insurance could be fun!

If it helps, out of all the 3 series coupe's I got quotes for (318Ci, 320Ci, 320Cd, 323Ci, 325Ci, 330Ci, 330Cd) the 323Ci was the cheapest by far, £500 cheaper than any of the others. I'm 20 as well so you might find that your quotes follow the same trend. I'm not too sure what the reason is but I'm seriously considering getting one.

10/10, i've not driven anything that makes me grin as much as my 5, even at normal road speeds its great, i don't see the image as a problem tbh standard (in the right colour) they look great and you can man them up some.

Just yesterday on the way home (With roof down) i was being followed by a girl in a new punto, having a bit of a laugh pulling away from her then slowing down, going into a small village i was turning right as some light and she was going straight on so to the left of me, i smiled at her she put her window down and i got her phone number :) Score, women love them :)

hmm. Well I got a quote on the clio sport for 800 and the mx5 for 750 might try one on the bimmer and 200sx big high 5 from me on the phone number! Maybe with some nice 16" (dont wanna spoil the handleing) and some lowerage (not much) it would be a bit more manly. Im really confused too many directions to go.

thing to note with the sx is that it will proberbly be modified, and it really needs to be modified to get its full potential out of it. Which will effect your insure quite a lot :)

I get 31.7 MPG in my 328 which is driving 50/50 on country lanes/motorway. New tyres depends on how you drive as does the fuel economy. To save yourself about £2,000 maybe look at the saloon 328 and not the coupe. Vertually identical cars and imho the saloon is more practical and has the same performance.

Would'nt swap it for anything but I did seriously look at a 98 spec DC2 (Honda Integra) for the same money, was very tempted many times to buy one.

the none CI ones dont quite do it for me as much, but Id imagine for the price difference I will get a lower mileage example and could afford some shiny ACS wheels! :D lol Oh god I really have no Idea, Im ranging from MX5 to 328 and literally everything else in between, still have a soft spot for clios but there french!!

I was waiting for someone else to suggest that, just in case it was me being too Honda-ish.
