but he can afford an ///M ;]

I doubt he can - I tried to run an insurance quote through for an M3 and nobody was having any of it even though the same places were happy with 330i's and 540i's.

6-7k for a M3, plenty left for insurance :p

im sure someone out there will insure him for near on 3.5k

Errr, hello? It's a 200bhp RWD Coupe which will do 0-60 in 6.5 seconds. It's far from boring, dull or sensible.

Might be so, but its also ~1400kg with driver aids. Thats the difference.

try driving an ITR fox

oh and by that logic

255bhp + 1380kg > 200bhp + 1400kg then

oh and before you say, XXXXbhp + YYYYkg > * etc

As said before it depends on your needs. If it's going to be the daily drive and you do a lot of motorway miles then perhaps the mx-5 isn't suited.

You need to get some test drives booked! :D

I went to have a look at a 99 mx-5 last weekend (place was closed so couldn't get in it :( ) and it struck me how the small they are. It was barely higher than my waste!

They look a lot bigger in pics that they are for real, I'm not sure I'll even fit in one now (i'm over 6ft).

You have a lot of choice, so don't rush. Take advantage of the dealers and test some nice cars. ;)

I dont know, that beemer, there is some really nice 328's out therewhich I can insure happily at £900. If I dont go for the CI then there really is loads and cheap both fast and practical. and apparently 30mpg isnt that hard to acheive. thats about what Im looking at for any of these cars. I wish I could insure a e36 M3! that would do me! but a nice 328ci isnt to be sniffed at. It will probably hold value better than the rest of them aswell. Its seems to cover all bases except service costs. I think Mx5/DC2/328 have to have some test drives. Ive got a month or 2 to mull it over and change my mind 250000 times.

Well turn them off then, little button on the dash, sorted.

200bhp + 1400kg > 130bhp + 1000kg.

The MX5 is accually 140bhp, so thus the bhp/tonne is infact very very close.

The BMW is 143bhp/tonne, and the MX5 is obviously 140bhp/tonne.

I wonder which of the 2 will be the better handing car... ;)

Only if you get the right one, the non S is only 131Bhp ;)

He can get a VVT for 10k thats 146Bhp and a 7.5k Red line, my 1.8is redlines at 7k.

Yeah but i kinda guessed he wouldnt go for the 131bhp one. ;)

Wow the VVT revs lower then i expected.

You get naff all in them as well, your best off going for a special edition or the S.

So it was just the S and special editions that came with the 140bhp one in the mk2? What was different that made it produce 9bhp more?

The special editions (Not all of them) Icon / Jasper Conran.

Sport / S.

The normal 1.8i didn't but its missing so much kit (98 spec), ABS / Electric Mirrors / LSD to name but a few, ABS might have come onto all models in 99 i can't remember.

No idea what the did to get the extra 9bhp but the 131Bhp version does 0-60 in 8.3 and the 140Bhp does it in 7.7 no way could 9Bhp make that much diff so other things must have changed.

if I do go the mx5 route it will be a sport. If I'm not mistaken they have a 6 speed box, wich probably helps accelaration. 140 in a light car is respectable and It can be improved if needs be so why not. I dont think Id spend 10k on one though. plenty of very nice ones about for 7-8k
