Who really uses more than 320GB

i am sitting here wondering if people who buy these huge hdd's (320GB etc) really use them. I dont know anyone (including me) who has ever used more than 60GB and if you put hundreds of pics etc on your comp then wont it slow it down loads????? :D
 
Some people like me - likes to rip music from my CD collection and keep it at high quality (usually FLAC lossless) on my PC. Others do DVD rips or installs a lot of games, programs etc. A mate of my dedicate 60GB just for all his Photoshop projects, files and textures.

320GB HDD is well priced as a storage drive and people use smaller drives or partition it for OS - "so load times is not affect".

I'm getting another 320GB for storage and a 74GB Raptor for OS... Fast OS loading, loads of space for my storage.
 
I am currently using 430GB of my 500GB storage. I have backups of all my media and a lot of applications I use are backed up too.

Edit: Why would a PC run slower just because some sections of a hard drive are populated? :confused:
 
i dont know i just thought that the more stuff you had on your computer (pics, songs etc) would make it run slower but im oviously wrong, oh well :D
 
I'm using over 600gb at the moment......90% of it being HD films. I use a 74gb raptor for the OS. Then I have 2x500gb hdd's and 1x160gb external hdd for storing all my films, music, pictures, etc..... I'm also running out of space by the day so I'll probably need another 500gb hdd soon too. :D
 
Use about 240GB & its sort of full. Its in separate HD's (i.e. 160+80 GB), backup most of the 160GB one onto the 80GB just in case - that way having >320GB makes sense :)

Regarding running slower: Partition 'sensibly' & defrag-ing reguraly will avoid that ;)
 
I have a 36Gb raptor for windows, 250Gb for programs and games, 250Gb for files and 80Gb for backup. Im eventually aiming for;

36Gb Raptor for windows
250Gb for games/programs
250Gb for files
500Gb for Media files(Divx/Mp3's etc)
1Tb for backup.

That lot should keep me happy for a while. And yes, I know 250Gb for games/programs is overkill, but I don't like unistalling stuff very often. :)

I've got 3 x 300gb sata hdds at the moment, and i've only got about 20gb left! Got all my dvds and music ripped to them though, so i don't have to have shelves and shelves of media cluttering up the living room. Could still do with lots more hdd space though!
 
I've got 1 *200GB and 1* 320GB so 520GB in total currently filled as follows:

4.5GB pictures (that I took ( + photoshop files) thank you very much)
17GB music
148GB TV
21GB films
13.5GB 'program install CD backups'
8GB word, excel, powerpoint, acess etc files
1GB backup of my fathers word, excel etc files
1GB scan of documents
43GB backup file (need to chuck that onto another computer)
25GB film from miniDV cam
9GB installedf programs
10GB old install of windows (I always forget to bakup a few files so have recently just kept old installs of windows for a couple of months after a format incase I have forgotten anything)
so that's 296.5GB used I've actually used 329GB so I've got a fair amount of extra stuff lying around somewhere.

It's easy to use lots of space depending on what you do with your PC. I've got approximately 1600GB used on my PC right now.

Some rough examples:

200GB of music
300GB of TV episodes
400GB of movies
100GB or so of installed games

That's 1TB used before even listing the other stuff like OS, apps, downloads etc.

Why would it? When I boot up Windows and run a game or whatever or even simply load a web browser, my PC has no need to instruct the hard drive to go anywhere near where all my pictures are stored so I can't see how it'd make any difference at all. It's true that performance can be affected the more cluttered a drive gets but basic maintenance like a defrag, etc or even seperate partitions/drivers eliminates that somewhat.

I've got ...

1 x 160 Gb
1 x 250 Gb

... at the moment. Not very much compared to some people here :eek:! I've got though about 80% of that with music, apps, DVD images and whatnot so I'm going to buy another 250Gb soon. The WD 250 one is a nice price on OcUK :)
 
Well, this is mine-
Main PC:
1x 200gb- Train Simulator/ Flight Simulator
1x 200gb- General Data
1x 200gb- Other games & programs
1x 74gb Raptor- OS etc. (On its way :p )
1x 80gb- Linux
Ipod:
1x 40gb- Ipod full of music (Not on any of the other drives!)
Laptop:
1x 100gb- MacBook Pro HDD; Some duplication of stuff, but not much.
Server:
1x 8gb- OS
1x 20gb- Internal webserver for testing etc. & data currently being downloaded.

Grand Total:

924gb :eek:
Total space remaining is around 100gb or so over the lot.

I have just over 2TB of storage space. Most of it used for storing HDTV downloads.
 
Of course all this space being used for videos and music is completly legal...

I have 2 *250gb. Using hardly any as reinstalled XP.
