Who really uses more than 320GB

I only have a mere 115Gb on my PC at the moment and I have yet to fill that

35Gb - Primary Drive (Windows XP, games, music, normal stuff)

80Gb partitioned secondary drive (20Gb windows vista, 10Gb Linux, 612Mb Linux-Swap, and the rest is general storage)

all will change when I get my new rig (and hopefully a better internet connection) next year

I could probably fill 3.2TB+ of disk space quite easily if I copied all my cd/dvd backup content onto hard drives, never mind 320gig. DVD+/-R is still the most cost effective media for datastorage.

What we need to realise is that although 'big' harddrives are available nowadays, there's also much more need for the increased space due to changes as we have moved into the 21st century:

-Internet connections are around 100x faster than the dialup days
-Music is often being stored on computers now with 1cd taking around 100meg even in compressed format
-Games take up around 10x as much space as they did at the turn of the century
-Home users now have access to digital photography and video
-Some people are using TV cards to record programmes to disk
-Some entertainment (software, music, games etc) is now being distributed over the internet rather than via traditional channels.

I've got a download box with 500GB in it, 70% of it is full and still growing.

For normal applications on a standard PC I find it hard to use much space. I've got hundreds of games installed and other apps on my 150GB raptor and there's still loads of space left.

But for storage of isos, music and whatnot, it is very easy to fill space.

In fact I've been thinking about buying a few more 250GB's

my file server =

120gb - 35gb free
120gb - 30gb free
200gb - 108gb free
250gb - 70gb free
250gb - 46gb free

each drive is set to certain things, its also my Media server, so has a film drive, tv progs drive etc etc ...

so yes, we do ;) ... the average user wont though, i put an 80gb in my next door neighbours pc i built for her, at her request, even though all she uses is 9gb  ... i coulda just dumped an old IDE in there tbh, but dell advertised 80gb, and she wanted the same spec

i am using quite a bit of storage too. about 2.5TB in a mixture of SATA and IDE drives in my big machine with another 1.5TB available via the other two networked machines if i need it.. Lots of tv series and lots of divx movies and of course the obligatory 500GB of Porn :D i hoard an aweful lot of stuff in the hope i will either use it or watch it some day. just not enough time in the day as i work about 60 hours a week with my business.

I record a lot of stuff with my HTPC and I keep on having to expand and expand and expand! - I currently have

6*400GB
10*250GB
2*200GB
2*150GB Raptor
2*80GB
2*74GB Raptor
2*60GB (IBM GXP75 deathstars still going strong :D )
2*36GB Raptor

Giving 6.1TB over 1PC, 1HTPC, 1NAS and 3 servers (CM stackers rock!). Currently there is just under 5TB of data plus the OSs

I may eventually get to watch some of it!

 Wow, now that lot is impressive.

dats insane ! lol, im about to hit a wall with My PC harddrives, Pondering building a file server PC, what do ya reckon ? whats best ? dual core, would be used to stream films to about 3 pc simulatiously, also transcode to an xbox 360 possibly at the same time as well, has to be quiet and on 24/7, is there software insidently that will switch off and autoboot a pc with no hassle ? say switch off 2am, on at 9am ? any help *** b appreciated

Combat

All my servers are set to go into S3 sleep (no fans on) after 30 minutes of inactivity . I use a magic packet to reactivate the server. I reboot them about once a fortnight to ensure they don't start to misbehave.

You don't need a particularly powerful CPU for a home server. Two of mine are an A64 3200 and an A64 3800 and both spend most of thier time clocked at 1Ghz under C&Q. There other is a E6600 at 2.66Ghz. The Asrock MB its' on won't clock any further so its in the server until nest month.

My current storage:

1x 74GB Raptor - Windows + Programs + Games
1x 200GB - Temp/pagefile (16GB), Installation programs images, vmware images
1x 200GB - Download files
1x 200GB - Multimedia Files

Will be getting:

3x 750GB Drives.

My current HDD storage is 3.65tb, thats split over 4 computers.

PC1
700gb of that is Music

PC2
700gb of videos, downloads, demos etc.

PC3
2x 1tb partitions (700gb used on each) for photos RAW, TIFF and Jpeg.
At the moment the above 2x 1tb partitons are setup identical, so in effect ive only got 2.65tb of storage, but they arent in a RAID 0 array.

MacPro
250gb with just the OS and Aperture Library. (soon to get another 2x500gb HDs but im not paying Apple prices for them)

Oh yes :)

3 * 250GB SATA drives, and 1 300GB SATA drive

First 250GB is Windows, programs, music, pictures, the other two 250's are striped , and the 300GB is backups.

Saying that, there's only ~100GB free across the drives at the mo......
