I am so fed up with updates!

I swear 50% of the time my PS3 spends on is spent showing a progress bar! I don't game much on my PS3 so every time I play it requires an update, and one which can't be done in the background!

Then game updates which can't be done in the background! All I want is to play some Uncharted (which I just picked up) and I now have to wait for the worlds largest system update, and then there will obviously be game updates.

Grrr. Download things overnight you stupid console!

How do you expect it to download and update games you might just pick up?

With PSN+ however you can download system and game updates that you own overnight if you wish.

Only time I download updates is when it is a new game.

I love Playstation Plus

Unless it's a game I haven't played for aaaaages in which case I don't think PS+ automatically gets the patches. I think it's only the last 10 games you've played, or something along those lines.

I wish it did them either in the background or over night. The Wii downloads updates in its own time, why can't the PS3? And if it does need to download something, do it in the background so I can do other things at the same time.

Obviously were in a culture now where there will always be updates, but the PS3s way of handling then is just frustrating.

Hopefully they have a better system of updates for next gen like a pre-defined time where the console can check (even if on standby) for system updates as well as game updates for installed/recently played games.

The PS4 announcement hinted heavily at this.

But its not next Gen at all. Background downloads for games have been on PC for years, and even the child of the current Gen consoles (Wii) manages to download system updates while on standby. Its as if Sony have a fettish for progress bars.

The PS3 can do this; but Sony decided to put them behind a paywall. As they've done with the Vita. I hope it doesn't, but wouldn't be surprised if the same applies to the PS4.

If you're not playing a multiplayer game you don't need to update anyway... just press cancel and play the game.

Wait, you just got Uncharted, and annoyed that a new game to your PS3 has updates for it? LOL :p

You do realise you can play it offline to avoid the updates if its that much of annoyance or cancel the update if its just a SP game. I assumed that was obvious, I guess not...

ps3ud0

I just plan ahead for this type of thing, like you I don't use my consoles much so if I'm going to play a game on them I do all the updates while preparing a meal or whatever.

PS3 updates are ridiculously slow. Even my mum gets rage at PS3 updates.

i can put money on it being the fact your using wireless.

i recently switched from wireless to wired and updates are pretty fast now, before it could take hours (literally) now all of them done in under a few minutes.

No issue with the game update, it was 13mb and worked almost instantly. It still can't be done in the background though.

Its the system ones that annoy me. I dont use my PS3 much, so almost every time I turn it on there is an update that I have to wait to download.

Updates are updates, thats fine, I just wish I didn't have to stair at a progress bar waiting for them to happen.

Skeeter - Totally agree.

Whats more anoying is I live a little further out and can only get 2mb broadband (Would not believe its 2013 right :)) You can imagine my face when I'm presented with a 630mb download to update the consoles OS... Using Wired by the way.

So goes away and downloads the big system update and shes fully downloaded and installed, great... I'll checkout the store... another 30mb update.

My Xbox360 on the other hand the OS updates are significantly less size wise and patches for games are capped at 20mb. One of the patches for GT5 on the PS3 was over 1Gb...

/Rant over :p

Edit - This topic came up a while back and someone did point out the Playstation+ has a automatic patching utility which you can setup overnight. But I'm not paying for PS+

I used to find these updates incredibly annoying when I still had my 1Mb connection (I'd come home wanting to play something online and then proceed to sit through a patch download that would take the rest of the evening), but then I subscribed to PS+ when I heard about the automatic updates and the addition of a quota of games each month. Currently have it set to switch itself on at 6AM around the time I wake up and download any system updates/game patches while I'm at work. Fantastic value for money as it is, but the auto update system just makes it so much more worth it when you have a shoddy connection like mine :p

The trouble is the PS+ solution isn't any good for people like me. I own 3 PS3 games at the moment, and yesterday was the first time I had turned on my PS3 for well over a month.

If you game all the time then PS+ is great, but if you are a casual gamer who just plays the odd title now and then its no use, yet your the type of person most frustrated by the updates.

was having a small rage about this at the wife last night as well. I swear there were two system updates in as many weeks recently.
