how would one do this?

i could test it out and see, I'm on 100MB ad wired so speedtests would easily show up a difference.

I can tell you Virgin throttle it, just like they do xbox live. They will say they don't, but I have 36Mbps Infinity and 100Mbps virgin connections at home and the speed difference is massive. I get better speeds from PSN/Live on BT than I do at anytime on Virgin.

And this difference is amplified during the STM times from Virgin.

steam have some of the best servers in the world, try and download off a normal site and see what happens. you cannot just compare what you get with steam to what you get on ps3, because i cannot think of any other gaming servers which come close to steam in terms of speed.

between 1-2 MB/s is good for the PS3 imo.

but i do know it could take me hours to download stuff before i went wired, router is in the next room as well, wireless is just terrible on the ps3.

Get 7-9.5 MB/s on anything else as well so I think I can compare :D.

I brought the full version of ssf4 arcade by mistake rather than just the upgrade as DLC. That took an afternoon to download and I did resort into cabling the unit it. Still not downloaded it on my other ps3 yet as the time it took.

It does seem that the sony servers are slow.

i paid £30 for plus, also you get 4-7 games free every month, as well as discounts, exclusive access to betas or earlier access, free 1 hour trials, etc, etc.

for £30 a year you get a lot more than auto updates.

Not really an option for a casual gamer who only plays on the PS3 occasionally.

Unfortunately the situation would be no different with a 360 though. Game updates would be quicker (although quite often they make you download large updates manually) but the 360 still gets its fair share of system software updates and in my experience, they're no quicker to download and install than the PS3 ones.

If you seldom use something, you can't really expect it not to have updates when you do eventually come round to turning it on.

So why does it always update?! I don't use my ps3 deliberately because it wants to update every single time I want to do something other than watch a bluray (even then theres the odd bit of downloading)...

I really don't see what the ps3 is fighting against to need a system update every few weeks (unless the clock is really that badly programmed that it needs setting with a 600mb update)

The Xbox downloads happen in the background. Well the game ones do.

No they don't. You start the game, it says an update is required, and you have to wait for it to download and install. Same as on the PS3.

The update thing was my main problem with the PS3. It really did extract the urine some times.
I remember downloading the SOCOM 4 beta. Download took ages and then there was an update that took about 2 hours to download and then about 30 minutes to install. I think it took something like 4 hours in total before I could play it

Not sure how that's sony s fault though to be fair!

Zipper always had a weird game update system which was internal to the game - dno why they did it the way they did...

ps3ud0

The difference being that the Xbox patches are limited to 20mb. Otherwise they have to release it as DLC/Add on.

Except Xbox patches take literally seconds to apply due to their small size.
