1 or 2 spaces after a full stop?

It's ONE space after both a comma and full stop. Two spaces is just something which generated from someone trying to be more formal and correct in there typing.
The point of a full stop is to show the end of a sentence not 'two spaces'. If you have trouble seeing full stops then get glasses.

Hmm, those of you saying you've only just heard of the two stops seems to give credence to double spacing being used for typewriting, cos my mum's an old bat (over 60), has been typing since she started working practically and she always uses double spacing...

Dude, that's exactly what the comma and full stop signify already! That's why they're different, and why we also have colons, semi-colons, exclamation and question marks. The spaces show where one word ends and the next begins, the punctuation indicates how it should be spoken.

It was probably introduced for clarity. I guess the guy talking about typesetting is probably right. Introduced with typing. It looks better, imo, which is the same as using a capital letter at the beginning of a sentence. I mean that's not actually necessary either, it doesn't change the word. Guess some still use it, some don't. First aid in English and the Writer and Artist Yearbook agree, so I'm sticking with two :)

One space after a full stop, one space after a comma. Anything else looks silly.

One thing that also irritates me is when people leave a space between a word and an exclamation/question mark.

2 spaces after a full stop.

Why?

Because the double-space can break up sentances better, especially if you're using an abbreviation within a sentance which require a full stop.

That's what I was taught nearly 20 years ago, gave an action and a reason behind it and I agree with it.

It should always be two spaces after a full stop, at least according to proper typing rules and procedures laid down donkeys years ago. Problem is few people are actually taught to type properly these days, they're just plunked down in front of a computer and expected to make their own way through it.

One for me always, never even heard about there being two spaces until i read this thread, must be some unspoken law of word processing :o.

It doesn't matter to me if it's two spaces or not. Personally, two spaces looks stupid and I refuse to do more than one on principle :p

some discussion here

personally I use one after a comma and two after a full stop.

I don't think there's an absolute right and wrong here.

The phrase 'life's too short' springs to mind. :D
