Not read the thread, but I'd take it. If he wrote it for you, cash it in and then just send him a thank you card once you've spent it. That's all he'd want.

Good decision. Though you may not need it now, your kids may need help in the future and this could be anything from assistance at university or the beginnings of the deposit on their first homes.

Whilst I don't know the full context or depths of your friendship, I have a few friends where a gift of 10k would be a fairly innocuous statement. I'd be embrassed to accept it, however I'd also find it hard to turn down. I know it wouldn't be to buy friendship as they're not that sort of person - but it would still be awkward.
