100 meg

Im not saying you are lying or anything but im pretty sure 0.5Mb/s up cannot support 250Mb/s down, I would be supprised if it could even support that lowest package. There is a reason uploads increase with downloads. Do you know what technology that service is using?

I have never lied in ANY of my posts nor forged any results. Have a check of optusnet in Australia. All I know is I get better value with my provider (TPG) as I have no need for their extreme broadband. In some cases Optus users can get more than .5 upload but it's still nothing compared to their download speeds.

Be thankful you at least get some quality customer support, with many providers here it varies.

That's my virgin media connection, their speed is always consistent. We don't have to dream about 100mb anymore either, it's here in the UK from virgin media soon enough.

RS do have a reputation for general terribleness. In fact, we had an off network monitoring probe with them for a while, a quick scan of the logs shows they had outages on

08/06/2010
21/07/2010
18/10/2010
28/10/2010

before we told them where to go.

Same here - I think they get large DDoSs on a regular basis and their attempt to filter those can cause packet loss. They are *very* cheap though, and I'm sure they have their uses for some people.

heres mine dunno why but no matter where i connect in the world to try this test the upload stays roughly the same but donloads vary from 2mb/s (slowest result ) to this

Dunno whether my ISP represents good value relative to everyone else nationally as we only have 1 ISP in Hull (Karoo) so I've nothing to compare it against. However I still think its pretty good and is ultra reliable. <I'm gonna regret saying that>

It costs me £40 per month inc. landline with free national calls 24/7 and 180 mins to mobiles at weekends.

I was looking at Speedtest again and noticed they have some global stats.

What is interesting (and possibly obvious), is that whilst Europe has the best on average, it is the 'Eastern Bloc' countries which have the best performance.

South Korea has the fastest on average in the world at 39.15Mb/s, but is closely followed by Lithuania, Latvia and Romania before you get back to The Netherlands, then Moldova?

Anyway - here is the full list, the UK comes in at 32nd for download, when ignoring schools and corporations. For upload we are 65th.

And as I started this thread, I had better put mine up, which annoy me greatly.

hahah, 100mbit with 1mbit upload, hahahah.

Throttling in action most likely, does it vary from time of day or towards the end of your billing cycle?

Yes, that's very overpriced when you consider what other coutnries get. Also Virgin fibre is £50 pm for 50Mbps isn't it?

£35 per month, so yes, the BT one is over priced

EDIT - upload of 1-2mbits is fine for everyone unless you are uploading 2gb of data everyday

It's not particularly great though, people want to stream stuff from home to their mobile devices, and upload hi-def videos to youtube etc. There's no technical reason that people with FTTH shouldn't have at least 40Mb/s uploads.

Well after signing up nearly a year ago, I have finally been installed as a 200Mb tester. I didn't think it was going to happen but finally has. Will see what their speeds are like later today.

Things are moving forward for Virgin Media, they just need to sort the rest of the problems which look to be related to the new super hub upgrade.

On those speeds it's rather close to what you theoretically need to download at full speed...throw in an application which doesn't use large packets (so streaming media of whatever type you fancy) and something else to use some upstream bandwidth (skype for instance) and you could easily hit the limit there. I'm guessing as I've never tested fully and can't be bothered to get a calculator and work it out but I'd say you would want 3-4% of downstream as an upstream speed at bare minimum to ensure full performance and probably more in reality.
