10GB vram enough for the 3080? Discuss..

Why should it have more than the previous flagship.

It has 2GB more than the 2080, wider memory interface and faster memory...sounds like an upgrade over the previous generation.

You keep telling yourself that if it makes you feel better :)
Flagship this or that, in real terms right now, the 3080 is the ‘successor’ (is that a better term?) to the 2080Ti, and that had 11Gb VRAM. Even the 1080Ti had 11GB.

10GB is on the stingy side for a top end card released recently, and cuts it very fine for 4K gaming right now. In a year or so, even more so. There’s just no denying it.

Never once have i had to play with game settings due to not having enough Vram and i don't intend ever buying a card where the gpu is held back by vram amount.

But you will buy a card that can NOT run max settings in all games and then...turn down settings anyway?

It is the same thing. End of the day as I said 10GB of GDDRX 6 is not not cheap. If they added that it would mean the price would go up a lot. No thanks. 10GB does the job in every game to date as far as I am concerned. Even if you are picky like some, it still does the job in 99.99% of games ever made to date.

Why is it not ok to lower textures one notch if ever needed but ok to lower lod or other settings?

Totally agree with you like always, the only development I have seen since our autumnal discussions on the new gen GPU's is since the enlightenment that nvidia can also offer 'SAM' in the form of a once dormant resizable bar, the 3080 is backed into a corner as its not really got much VRAM to offer this should it generously grant you some performance (game dependant). I think if resizable bar was a known event, the naysayers that once were pitchforking the lack of VRAM for wishy washy reasons, are now going to overturn that rock to find another reason to have >10Gb VRAM.

Like mentioned its likely not going to mean much for those that move on to next gen in a years time, but for people who invested a lot of their money as the upgrade maybe every three years, the 3080 is unfortunately weak for the longevity stakes if SAM/Bar plays out a respectable feature we never knew we were missing...

There is apparently, and that’s what makes this thread so much fun to read. :D

Yeah. Can always lower texture one setting, problem solved. Hell, even people with a 3090 need to lower settings in FS2020 if they want 60fps, so that will only get worse in 1-3 years time. One way or the other, you will either need to lower settings or upgrade.

No one is denying it. People are explaining that adding more would make it cost a lot more not making it worth it. But some people do not want to acknowledge that ;)

Honestly, watching people engage in these levels of defensive denial and irrational arguments (like the GPU's don''t have enough horsepower because I can't run 4k90fps in a specific VR sim... wtf) over simply the prospect that VRAM may realistically prove become a limitation in this generation on the 10GB 3080 is an exercise in witnessing cognitive bias.

Any sensible person with a good head on their shoulders would simply say: "Yeah, 10GB is cutting it fine as games already use more than 80%+ of that so there's a realistic chance upcoming and particularly demanding games may exceed it at max settings during this generation". But no, we started with "10GB will not be exceeded within this generation" and then the tone gradually changed to "simply turn some settings down and problem sorted".

You could have course once again send people the link showing the interview where Nvidia even admitted that 10GB on the 3080 was a cost saving exercise and more VRAM would have been nice but it doesn't seem to make much difference: https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/comments/ilgi6c/rtx_30series_qa_answers_from_nvidia/

Extra memory is always nice to have but it would increase the price of the graphics card, so we need to find the right balance.

They know full well that they limited usage of new and expensive GDDR6X VRAM to hit a price target.

Anyway as I already wrote in this thread, as much as 10GB VRAM is objectively too little on a flagship card, I would still have bought a 10GB 3080 despite these VRAM misgivings and I would have course still have turned settings down if I had needed to, because I am ultimately a realist and the supply of cards where I live is desperately bad to the point no-one could have predicted when these cards launched. But in the end, I lucked out and found a good custom Gigabyte 3090 Gaming OC (aka 3080 Mug Edition 24GB), sold as a customer return, for WAY BELOW the market price at £1290. An unusually low price which, given going market value (it sells for £1890 at OCUK and £2200 on Ebay). This finally made it an investment where I won't lose significant money in depreciation when the next generation comes and supply is once again also terrible and people are again similarly desperate for cards that bots and scalpers have hoovered up.

For the next generation, armed with the knowledge of the unpleasant ****-show we have today, I will simply immediately order the best card at launch for MSRP and wait patiently for it to arrive before prices explode. We now live in a world where, given the known production and capacity issues, supply of high-end PC components may not meet demand again for a very long time. :)

Honestly,

Bingo...

Also remember the 3080 is over half the price cheaper than a 3090, so there has to be some compromise and none of these companies are your friends and Nvidia priced the 3080 at £650 because of AMD and reality is it would have been close to a £1000 and the 3080ti would have been £1500 and the titan would have been £2.5k as always or more this time £3k.

3080 is a good card and for the money great value at £650 if you can ever get them at that again, they are now £1k to £1200.. reality of what they should have cost anyways. The fake MSRP is just well fake as we have all seen and the only cards at MSRP are the FE and that is upto Nvidia how many to release at that price and reality as we know not many at all and reality is they can stop them anytime they want (look at AMD store.. zero stocks but they say they didn't stop making them..blaa blaa), which is probably getting close to that now and putting the pressure back on the AIBs and their pricing.

This is not true at all. We started with people compairing the cards to the current crop of consoles, ignoring console unified memory tech, and using that to incorrectly bolster their own arguments, that being the 3080 doesn't have enough vram.

Nobody as far as I remember said 10gb would be enough this generation. Not with any real conviction or any kind of source to explain that opinion.

You made this exact same argument back in November and I questioned you then with no response. WHO was saying 10gb would not be exceeded this gen?

And the 3080 is not the 2080 replacement, its the 2080ti replacement

So what’s the 3090? And what will the 3080ti be? The successor to the successor? The 3070 is faster than the 2080ti so is that also the successor? Strange that the successor is also half the price of the previous gen, lol, I hope you don’t manage your own finances :D

The alternative configuration was 20GB, which would see the card at £1000, or 16GB with a smaller memory interface and a price tag of 800-900. They already have the 3090 if you don’t want value for money :p

The 3090 is nvidias flagship gaming GPU the turing flagship card was the 2080ti so it a replacement regardless what they call it. A 3080ti if they release one will be the sucessor of Turings 2080 super.

All nvidia did for the 3090 was re-jig the name and double the VRAM to make people think they were getting a cheap Titan but it's not a Titan as it doesn't have Titan drivers but this was enough to fool many in thinking the £1500-2000 they are paying out was a deal.

^this - they are just a bunch of cards with numbers so you know which one is better than the other

Where are the Titan drivers then that every Titan that nvidia has released had?

They’re like cavemen trying to explain graphics cards. “Big number look like other big number so must be same same”.

As you said, Titan is an AI card with separate drivers. The Titan is also $1000 more expensive.

Post 2 and 3 said it's enough, then it kind of does what it does with multiple posting, for example there was posters like (I think) princessfrosty spamming with useless info that 8gb/10gb's enough over this thread and the 70 thread, with other posters spamming back that it wasn't.

But, you need to read the thread objectively not just with your own opinion(which everyone can be guilty of) to notice it's still a split opionion.

Do you think 10gb's enough?

I don't as my 3070 runs out at 1440p so I don't imagine 10gb enough for 4K, especially not over the gpu's life cycle.
