10GB vram enough for the 3080? Discuss..

8 GB of memory is not always enough
The PC version of Horizon Zero Dawn offers some really detailed textures. However, the chic surfaces also require a lot of memory. 8 GB is not always enough. For 1,920 × 1,080 and 2,560 × 1,440 it doesn't have to be more than 8,192 MB, but for 3,840 × 2,160 it does. Radeon graphics cards have more difficulties with the maximum texture details in Ultra HD than their GeForce counterparts, but the latter also get stuck every now and then. Horizon Zero Dawn remains playable on a GeForce, but the texture details should be reduced. A Radeon gets stuck again. Full texture details run flawlessly in Ultra HD from 11 GB.

In the case of graphics cards with only 4 GB, the full texture details should not be used in Full HD either. The combination is not unplayable, but it always gets stuck. Full HD runs from 6 GB without this restriction. For WQHD this only applies to a limited extent, with a 6 GB card there is occasional stuttering, again more on a Radeon than on a GeForce. From 8 GB, full texture details are no longer a problem in WQHD.

Now look at the jump for next gen - who really believes 10 GB is enough? :D

It will be fine for a couple of years or more- i'll be using a 4080 by the time i notice any issues. As i managed to pre-order from A..zon yesterday morning (not cancelled yet) i don't care as i'll be straight onto their CS and get a refund anyway. Or maybe i'll do that in a few months if i fancy it anyway :D

That's the same thing 2080ti owners said...until it was no longer fine.
Change is known to be sudden, unexpected and unanticipated. Yet, while completely avoidable, never taken serious. Always in hindsight wishing one made a better decision. :D

Its gone from lol @ 2080ti owner memes to: Everyone wishes they had a 2080ti now

I mean that's the review. We now know what the performance of the 3080 is more/less. I'm sure some 2080ti owners will reconsider selling them now. But most important wait to see what RDNA 2 offers in performance. Will it force Nvidia's hand to release a 3080s with 20GB of vram to one up 6800xt with 16gb...(guess).

All we need to confirm is power and thermals. The most scary part of these amperes.

I wonder how many reviewers are going to test vram usage properly. Going to be Interesting. Also interested to see how much vram AMD will have on their cards

Reviewers have little time for day 1 reviews out, we may have to wait a bit to get the real juicy stuff like pcie4 bandwidth tests, vram tests etc

Testing vram shouldn't really add much extra time should it? Should also be a priority I would've thought but we'll have to see how many decide to focus on that.

Lol. There was ample time to sell before the value dropped. At the very latest one had time between the announcement of the presentation announcement and the actual day it took place.

One gut managed to get a good price for his 2080S on members market. He posted the day or day before the presentation.

Has it? I still would not pay more than £400 for one.

That's the point, pay 400, overclock it and compete with the 3080 for half the price - winner chicken dinner
Thing is no one is selling it at that price and if they were it gets snapped up quickly. Then after that I would not be having no way near as much fun as getting a newly launched shiny card, it certainly won't be the same performance even overclocked, the gap will only get wider with new drivers, it will be much weaker in RT etc. Also we do not know for certain that it won't overclock. Too many reasons. Not as simple as you make it sound. Especially for me where I skipped the 2000 series, just fancy new tech.

Oh and one is brand new, other second, third or fourth hand. Lol.

Fired up Horizon Zero Dawn, max settings @2160p.

Memory used was 10.8GB, memory actually needed was probably quite a bit less than that.

Shh.. You will upset Grim and a few who will have us believe 10gb is not enough for today’s titles, let alone ones coming out soon :p

Rich coming from an AMD owner who will soon be making statements like the 6900xt is better than the 2080 cause it has 16gb vram

Huh? You confused again I see. I am about to get a 3080 shortly mate, had loads of Nvidia cards (likely more than you) do keep up ;)

The reviews will test the vram surely by presenting the 4k results? All they need do is find a game (modded or otherwise) that pushes vram usage.

I guess we will see in a few days if Nvidia prohibits the use of FS 2020 or some bs like that in the reviews
