1366 X58 Xeon 5650

It seems some people are struggling with six sticks but 4ghz should not be a problem. Suspect it depends on the board too.

My 5670 is only running 3 sticks but is rock solid at 4.4ghz and only 1.344v. I think I might go for a balls out 4.6ghz and see what happens... :)

First step is to try and get 210 bclk stable with the CPU and RAM multipliers backed off!

80 is a great price, got mine for 88 and was pleased with that, worth the extra few quid to get the multiplier you want. With them going cheap it makes going for the big numbers even more tempting...

Can I chip in for bit quick advice please, my desk PC is getting old but not a problem for normal use being a Intel Core 2 Quad Q9650.
For Pro apps like CAD and Image rendering I'm using a new MSI Steel Series Pro laptop, with i7-4810MQ and a Quadro 3100M... which is way quicker...

One of the apps I use is Keyshot5, a photo real ray tracing and animation software, which allows me to farm out the rendering jobs to other PC on the network. The more Cores the better basically. So I'm thinking to rebuild the old Q9650 with a Twin Xeon rig ..... on a budget !!.

I see X5650 6 core CPU go quite cheap, and a way to get 12 cores for sensible money.... a MoBo seems more of a challenge.

Any suggestions, I have a Firepro V5900 for graphics... 8 Gig ram should be enough.

Cooling and MoBo suggestions appreciated.
Thanks

The enthusiast consumer boards were rare and are still pricey for dual socket. 300+ it seems.

Have a read of this I think it supports the cpu you are talking about but do check

Cooling wise if you stick to stock speeds the stock unit will be fine. For 4ghz something cheap that fits dimension wise. Not sure if that board will overclock though.

Thanks for the link..... interesting read....... more searching around I find I could pick up a refurbished HP Z600/800 workstation with 4 or 6 core twin CPU for around 450 quid...(ebay seller in Germany) with nothing else to do except boot it up !

Currently running an i7 930 at 4ghz, have a rampage iii extreme

I was just going to go all out and get an x-99 system with a pair of 970's and re do my water cooling while i was at it.

I could just stick in one of these though, and then upgrade my gpus. Saves a lot of money on new board/ram etc. Other than a better controller for USB 3 and sata 3, along with more of those ports - is there anything particularly useful on the new boards? m2 slot is superflous in my main PC, quick sync? would that help me out in vegas at all?

Only thing I do that will use more cores is Sony Vegas - which i find painfully long render times for what I use it for.

How do these compare to the new 5930k's? I know gaming will be similar, but what about clock for clock video conversion?
Feel free to link me to earlier posts in the thread etc. At work and about to run out of lunch break so can't continue to read it :(
