1366 X58 Xeon 5650

Just plunged for the £60 Xeon X5650, mainly for something to do. It's not often that I use 8 cores as it is but I couldn't help myself. I also expect a small speed boost too so that might help a bit for games and the like.

AMD's Zen will probably be on its second or third iteration before I need anything more than a Gulftown. :D

Ordered one. Its worth a punt @ 60 quid considering I don't have to do **** all beyond take off cpu block, swap cpu and replace cpu block. Unlike most upgrades where I have to drain and take stuff apart which is a pita.

I got my one in put the bus up to 182mhz and altered the CPU power limit (forgot what the setting is called) straight to 4ghz without issue without any Vcore bump. Very happy!

Ahh man i think my pc is ****ed. it wont boot into bios or anything anymore after i switched CPU's from a intel 920 to a xeon 5670.

i tried re inserting the old 920 and still not booting into bios at all.

I also tried clearing cmos and no joy!

The rest of the system all turns on, hard drives, fans, gpu's etc but nothing appears onscreen.no bios, nothing.

CPU only goes one way and from expecting it, there is no bent pins i can see at all!?!?

altered the cpu power limit?

I will confirm what the setting is called next time its plugged in, Its a bit of a mix mash just now still waiting on some parts. Before i altered the setting it would only go to 3.6ghz despite a 22 multi and 182 Bus.

Is it something like CPU turbo power limit?
I just saw it in my bios when i was sticking my OC back on after updating to the newest version in preparation, and discovering it wouldn't let me re apply my saved profile from the older bios.
Trying to remember settings from years ago was a pain lol.

Here is what i tried:

  • tried one resetting cmos again and taking out the battery
  • removed both 980 gtx cards and used my old 580gtx
  • Used one stick of ram
  • tried different DVI cable
  • tried reseating the 920 CPU.
  • disconnected the 24pin? connector on the mobo from the psu and reseat it.

Edit. Further expecting the mobo it seems some of the pins on the socket got bent! god know how. diddnt drop anything on the socket itself and the actual cpu goes only one way into the socket!

Not looking good

It's unbelievably easy to do :(

I think it's when you've had a cpu in there for years going through heat cycles etc. they become slightly attached and if you remove he old one anything less than perfectly you've had it.

I had one bent pin and managed to bend it back with a magnifying glass (attached to a desk) and pin head. Mine was difficult as it still worked just had problems with one DIMM. if it's totally broken nothing to lose...

How many pins are gone?

It probably doesnt seem it but thats good news. At least you have a chance of fixing it as you can see whats wrong.

It's very easily done sadly.

When I initially broke down my Alienware Aurora I removed the CPU as I needed it for another build, leaving the board in and fully connected.

When I went to remove the board I unplugged the 8 pin EPS and tucked it out of the way. As I went to lift the board the 8 pin swung down, hit the socket, game over.

One of the pins snapped and stopped the board booting. I traced it, seems it was a VDDC pin so part of the power.
