-£15K M5 E60

Took another car out within my budget out for a spin today, A8 W12 (2006), really nice high spec, lovely drive and quite powerful. Pretty sure it was a little quicker than my 400bhp Jag but due to the size of the car it was misleading. Preferred the gearbox to the M5's, not as harsh and easier to use, ticked a lot of boxes until the power steering started making a horrible noise on the way home, the dealer said the fluid just needed topping up....he didn't make a sale today.

An A8 W12 is a very different car to an E60 M5. Are you after a performance saloon or a quick cruiser?

Either or, one or the other...:)
I'm after a nice powerful car that's comfy, I thought the m5 was a really nice comfy drive surprisingly as I imagined it to be hard and raw.

This is my next move!

Going to be selling the M3 in the coming months been using my old E39 as my daily commute of 60 motorway miles and it's perfect for that but hankering for that V10 as my special/day off car

I think you'll regret selling the M3. You obviously like it and compared to an E60 M5 its a car you can enjoy without a guillotine hanging over your head. The E60 M5 is a ridiculous proposition used unless you can find a sub 60k miler and warranty it. I genuinely don't understand who buys them now, those who can afford to shrug off the risk can afford to just buy something newer. It's also, IMHO, a fairly flawed car - a large, comfortable 5 Series.....

... with an engine that begs to be revved and a fuel range so pathetic you'd have to stop 3 or more times for fuel on a long drive!

If you find the needle in the haystick with warranty then great but they are few and far between now.

I would personally rather have a 550. Never really liked the idea of a high revving V10 in the 5 series. Prefer the torques over the revs...

if they are both possibilities and if you don't need rear seats get an XKR, straight line performance close to a M5, comfort on a par with the A8, loads cheaper to run than a M5 and massively better looking than either

I have to say I'm in the same boat I do a 60 mile commute and love a comfy wafter and this is why I thought an m5 is the next logical step comfy enough to waft to work on the days I fancy taking it to work and enough of an insanely quick country blaster when I fancy it on days off

I find my E39 more comfortable than the M3 on the commute to work

I find the M5 a great cruiser, while still being able to put the look of impending doom in to the eyes of any pedestrian crossing the road; watching people fleeing when you accelerate from 15-35 is endlessly entertaining.

That said you do notice it's quite revvy at high speeds, though it's quite a nice sound.

............and if you need 4 seats look at the XFR which has all the same points above and has dropped down to sub £20K levels now (some to £15k, but probably for a very good reason).

I'm off to look at one in a bit because I'm having real difficulty transitioning from the RS6 back to a normal" I want MPG" car due to the immense boredom.

If you can't afford to buy 2 then don't buy 1 would be my advice with this sort of car at that end of the market. The bills they can throw up can be of the serval thousand variety and the bits are pricy.

They're in the hands of the likes of DannyW these days... need I say any more.

I look after my cars? I have had an E60 M5 and maybe in a few years an F10 M5 - You will never own either so go slate someone else

Anyway E60 M5..

I wouldn't say a warranty is essential just find one that's had all the common faults done by bmw

i.e. mine was showing 80k (4 owners you decide whether you think genuine or not) mine had clutch and flywheel done, vanos replaced and new timing chain. I covered less then 5000 miles in 6 months in it so maybe im not the person to be giving his opinion on reliability but mine never gave me a minutes trouble. I sold it to a mate he used it everyday he had to change <£100 sensor on the gearbox as the auto stopped working (would only let you use manual)

I would deffo have one again, and still wouldn't bother with warranty, BUT I would only buy one with the vanos done. Clutch doesn't both me, Its just a clutch? Another problem you will have is, do you know any independent garages you can trust with an M5 even I don't know anyone
