2GB VRAM is fine for 1080p, and will be for some time.

Next year 680's & 7970's will be old hat anyway.

You sure about that? Apart from the epeen brigade and those using high res setups, most would buy and expect there top-end GPU's to last a number of years. Not looking for a debate about it, just wonder if the 680 would be a good investment or just highlight a lack of foresight.

i won't buy for at least a month, let the economics situ bite till it lowers the price. First adopters allways pay a premium. I remember the vertex 3 launch £220 120gb now look. Which is why i'll wait!!

Get a 680... Watercooled 680 will look better in your Mountainmods(?) monster rather than a Phantom.

true but i am torn between those 2 cards, both will be water-cooled.

only need a card and psu and im all set to go,didn't realise it would take me this long to get everything together :(

I don't and won't sit on the fence purely on the basis, I will never buy anything as by the time the prices have dropped to a reasonable figure, I will be wanting the 780/880/980

Bite the bullet and buy now.

If your not interested in epeen then in 6 months time dropping from Ultra / max settings to high in 1 or 2 demanding games is not going to worry you one bit.

If the 680 is faster and cheaper @ your given res (1080p) then buy it!;)

Guessing customs would have a field day if I flew over to the States, bought a new computer and brought all the parts back xD

Isn't the uhm phantom a non-standard PCB? Therefore standard waterblock wouldn't work?

AMD VRAM efficiency does not = NVIDIA VRAM efficiency. I can get away with less than 1500MB usage with 2X MSAA @ ULTRA @ 2560X1600.

I think 2GB should be just about right.

And usage does not equal requirements.

You will always have lower usage than available memory.

It works both ways, actually, since some games will buffer more textures but that doesn't mean they require it from your card as the gameplay may be just as smooth with some textures loaded on demand.

Epeen is a term I should not of used, it's too loaded, and clearly we have different operational definitions.

It's what you say above that makes me wonder if its a bad investment. Anyway for those that buy a 680 I hope they enjoy their GPU and feel its money well spent.
