• Competitor rules

Please remember that any mention of competitors, hinting at competitors or offering to provide details of competitors will result in an account suspension. The full rules can be found under the 'Terms and Rules' link in the bottom right corner of your screen. Just don't mention competitors in any way, shape or form and you'll be OK.

;)

And usage does not equal requirements.

You will always have lower usage than available memory.

It works both ways, actually, since some games will buffer more textures but that doesn't mean they require it from your card as the gameplay may be just as smooth with some textures loaded on demand.

I agree with your first point, however when max out all of my settings then the card hits 1500MB and everything goes pete tom.

Epeen is a term I should not of used, it's too loaded, and clearly we have different operational definitions.

It's what you say above that makes me wonder if its a bad investment. Anyway for those that buy a 680 I hope they enjoy their GPU and feel its money well spent.

Whats the alternative? 7970 3GB? The key point is Gibbo has stated 680 is cheaper than a 7970. Reviews so far show @ 1080p 680 is faster.

680
So cheaper now and faster now. Maybe slower in some games in 6+ months. Highly likely still faster in others in 6+ months.

Vs

7970
Slower now, and more expensive now. Maybe faster in some games in 6+ months. Highly likely still slower in others in 6+ months.

Would you really pay more for a slower card today in the hope that in future in some games it may claw back the advantage?

You make valid points, no doubt you have seen the posts above, that highlight the rising price of the 7970 all of a sudden, so a claim that it's cheaper is questionable.

I would pay for the GPU that is going to serve me best in the long term, as with any type of investment many factors come in to play, its getting them right that is the difficult part. The wait and see what the position is in a couple of months as stated by others seems like the best approach. For those that buy now Enjoy;)

They probably don't want the 680s to look uncompetitive. :p
Entirely possible I suppose. If they've committed and take a huge amount do stock of 680s it would make sense to raise the price of a relatively small stock of 7970s for a short while to make sure anyone buying a high end card chooses the one that there's 1000 of sitting in the warehouse :D

Unusually OCUK weren't particularly competitive with 7970s compared to other major online retailers even before any price rise so I wonder if they just have a better relationship with Nvidia/disties.

RRP for 680 is $50 lower than 7970 IIRC.

However i agree with what your saying in general. You are correct that wait and see (for a while so prices stabilise) is always the best approach. But at some point you gotta buy and take the hit. Something faster is ALWAYS coming 6 months down the line.

Early adopters i'm sure will enjoy either card tbh! They are both EPIC and @ 1080 will destroy everything for a long time.

I'm considering one but it depends on price. When the 7970 came out OC was one of the most expensive by quite a bit. Hopefully this time they will have a more competitive price with the 680...

I promised myself that I was going to hold out for GK110 (next year now?), but I can feel my resolve crumbling already. Does that make me a bad person? Or just plain stupid.

Another year with a 580 at 1440p, just not sure...
