Why shouldn't people get excited? Anybody who has a love of hardware is excited when a new range of cards are launched. People on these forums are enthusiasts.

Then there are the people who have freesync monitors and who want better cards, they finally have an upgrade path.

And last there are people who won't buy from one brand or the other. And that's fine people are free to choose whatever brand they want, even if it limits their options. But, still, these people exist and for those that only buy AMD, they now have more choice in the higher end of things.
 
For someone who isn't fully up to date, this vega launch is a vega launch of which their will be others is that correct?
Starts with one type, then a more specific gaming launch later?
Or have I got that wrong?

People like me who have AMD aging card (R290) but a modern ultrawide FreeSync screen.

okay and is one like the new 470 and one the new 480, or are there massive structural differences between them?

Do hope every review involves vega with a rzyen or amd card, rather than the intel offerings, so distinction can be drawn against potential nerfismssssss.

This is Vega10 - the cut-down Vega11 and Vega12 (and the Ryzen APU's with Vega Embedded - the Mass market one Intel are really worried about) will launch later in the year to replace their polaris equivalents - between now and black-friday to hit all the sales targets for "Back to School" and "Holiday Season" events.

They may do some mobile/mxm ones next year IIRC but will concentrate on APU's this year.

We'll find that out on Monday I guess ? but the rough answer is yea its the 470, the name of each is an indicator with the 56 unit having a lower number of compute units. 87.5% doesnt seem that bad if it can be 20% cheaper.
People have labelled this the 1070 level performer. Nobody knows for sure how well the each card will work though.


Can we preorder v56 on Monday or not till later?

Those vega 11/12 thingys, due later this year, are they expected to perform more than the 10, or does the whole numbering not equate to power?
 
Thanks, thought so. So the gamers stuff might be launching first, then the mainstream bits after.
That's fine, just wondered.

NOW AMD are producing great processors at all stages and levels and entry points, it'll be interesting to see if their next gen of gaming stuff managed to slap green team.

The numbers are the order the projects started - in polaris they started small (10) and worked upto the 580 (11) - in Vega they started big with the 10 and so the 11/12 will become the x40/x50/x60/x70 equivalents - maybe even the x80 equivalents with the 56/64 still out in front as the full chip. Whether they keep the naming convention and go with RX 640/650/660/670/680 or something else we will find out in the future.

The next vega is the 20 for the high end (with better fp64 for HPC use and the 7nm shrink) but they may not bother with 21/22 models and will wait for the 3x ranges.
 
So whats the chances we can highjack the Vega 20 for gaming use kinda like Titan even though thats basically a gaming card. Or will it be twice the price of frontier. I ask because 7nm will be great to see

I dont think they will retire the 580 for any vega card. They'll be differences, I dont think they need every card to be on this architecture or maybe Im wrong :o
