I expected so. I've long suspected the 1070 would be the minimum meaningful upgrade, although I am curious about the Vega 56/64 after hearing of all the under-volting / OCing magic some report on here. I also once saw a youtube vid of a GTA V comparison involving a 1070 vs a Vega (I assume a 56), where the 1070 was beating it at 1080p, but as the resolution went up toward 1440p+ and 4k, the Vega quickly overtook it. I haven't exactly done much research to confirm this is reliable though.

Not too concerned with a warranty refresh considering my GTX 970 has made it this far and hasn't died. If cash/assets must change hands, I want to see with my own eyes I've got an upgrade without just relying on my FPS counter. Otherwise, may as well keep what I've got imo.

The 580 seems about 15-20% on most titles but actually about 50% faster on some DX12 titles (there is an error at 1:57, the 570 is about 30fps for that measure - see comments section). The 590 is reportedly 20% quicker than the 580:

So an upgrade but not a huge one and it depends what you plan on playing.

I have to wonder if benchmarks like that aren't just highlighting how gimped the 970 is at ultra due to only having 4 GB / 3.5 GB memory. A bit like the benchmark threads on here, where I submitted my 'Ultra' Forza 4 score and it was about 2 fps above a 1050 Ti and heavily memory overloaded going at 33 fps or so. I then whacked it down to medium settings, and it's hovering near enough 60 fps at 3440x1440. I can live with customised low/medium/high vs ultra settings in favour of frame rate.

Very interesting, especially as I'm on a display that fits the higher resolution category.

Presumably this was also without all the OC/under volt tricks talked about on here - though I'd leave that to someone more ITK to interpret the MSI afterburner OSD in that video.

That's a very old video (sep 2017) AMD drivers have matured to the point Vega 56 is head to head to the 1070Ti nowadays, in fact Vega 56 is the reason Nvidia released that card. GTA V doesn't run very well on AMD anyway.

But it's still far better than a 1050ti

And despite the lack of VRAM let's not pretend the 1060 3gb doesn't hold up against the 570 and 580 at the moment. Although I think with AMDs DX12, Freesynch, larger memory and improving drivers it maybe a case of some fine wine.

AMD definitely are wanting to bring in there nextgen tech for the PS5, that seems obvious. And many are picking Nvidia to release there next gen some time after Navi. Initially analysis of Navi's progress in this gen doesn't sound like it's a huge leap.

Exactly. The GTX1060 3GB was a response to the RX470 IIRC,so it kind of made no sense with the stupid price of the GTX1050TI in their range. I just find the GTX1050TI a cynical card for its price,as it even the reviews were dodgy,as they tended to use aftermarket ones against reference GTX960 2GB cards. However,if you compared the normal GTX960 4GB which didn't have a reference cooler,it was like 10% faster at best,and in the UK was a similar price. Regarding the VRAM,its starting to have an effect just by looking at 4 of the last biggest games tested on GameGPU:

Most of those games are Nvidia sponsored now IIRC,and the difference between the 3GB and 6GB models should be no more than 10% due to the reduction in shaders of the 3GB model. Look at the GTX1050TI 4GB and GTX960 4GB. Its why for the most part if someone wanted a GTX1060,I pushed them to the 6GB one,which wil have a much longer lifespan IMHO.

Also,its been quite clear what Navi is going to be - a fixed Vega on a new node. It seems the noise about Vega having certain features broken is true(there was one of those computing mailing lists where it was said this was the case). I just hope AMD does not use HBM2,but GDDR5 or GDDR6,as the cost of HBM2,and having to package it,won't help AMD.
