Without the incident at the chicaine, Hamilton would not have been as close to Kimi and would not have overtaken him on the straight.

If it wasn't for Kimi giving Hamilton no room Hamilton would have been in front anyway.
The rules say you must yield the position which Lewis did, I don't think the rules specify how much by. Kimi's car was completely in front of Hamilton and if Kimi had been more defensive into La Source, the whole issue wouldn't have been a problem.

Agree with JonRohan's post above.
Can't believe the FIA have done it though... Hamilton whining about Kimi not leaving space was ridiculous but I'm not sure this was the way to go about it.
They should have just lumped a fine on him.

Hamilton was deemed to have "cut the chicane and gained an advantage", thereby breaching Article 30.3(a) of the sporting regulations and Appendix L chapter 4 Article 2 (g) of the International Sporting Code.

Yeah, hmm. Not what I saw.

Hamilton would have slip streamed him after the chicane anyway, but that wasn't his intention. His intention was clearly to pass Kimi on the chicane, Kimi didn't yield and Hamilton had to take a dive.

These things have happened a lot in the past without much of a whimper from the FIA from my limited memory. I'm just purely disappointed.

Ferrari response...

Ferrari did not hide their criticism of the way Hamilton behaved after cutting the chicane, with their team principal Stefano Domenicali saying he had no doubt the way Hamilton retook the lead was the result of the benefit he had in cutting the chicane.

"Personally, I think it was a little bit extreme," he explained. "It's normal that when you attack that you are racing, but the problem is (of) the advantage that may take by doing a manoeuvre and this is the key point of it, so I think that that's the focus that has to be considered.

"What is really the advantage that you are taking in such conditions that can be used in the second situation at the first corner? That, in my view, is the most important thing. But this is racing."

Domenicali did not wish to make any comments on the decision to impose a 25-second penalty, however.

"As I said to your Italian colleagues, we are not used to commenting on decisions. The only thing I would say is that as soon as we had been summoned by the stewards, we gave our position to the stewards and that was it.

"Then the stewards for sure listened to the Hamilton discussion on that, and that is the decision. On that we don't want to take any further comment."

Ferrari have insisted that they did not lodge any official protest with the race stewards about the matter.

Without wishing to point out the obvious is all of that not negated by the fact that your driver crashed and did not finish the race!!!!!!

yep mclaren are appealing and taking the issue to a hearing, not a decision taken lightly by a big team.

knowing how the powers that be operate now though iam guessing the hearing will be scheduled for the day after the season ends.

oh no its spreading!

Kimi was on the correct line tbh, I don't think Hamilton was ahead given that he'd be on the wrong racing line.
Kimi was in the right place and Hamilton had gained an advantage by cutting the chicane...

It's clear the FIA are trying to engineer a close championship but they are in real danger of bringing F1 back down to "joke" levels.
I've already heard "F1 is a ridiculous sport" after telling the parents about the punishment. I imagine there's plenty of others with a similar opinion.

Maybe by going to court Mclaren could be on the receiving of another US$100M fine :D

I think Mercedes are probably thinking twice of buying a share in Mclaren now :D
Either that or perhaps they will take them out of the F1 series.

I wouldn't have a problem with the decision if I believed that if it had been the other way round then Ferrari would have received the same punishment. However, past events would suggest otherwise. It's pretty ridiculous really.

Being that it was wet, the 'correct' dry line isn't always the best one to be on.
