Well that's a matter of opinion isn't it. I think he is.
Agreed. He has done what MS did which is to win the title in an inferior car. FM is a great driver, but struggles to move through the field. He is driving the best car, a car which isn't as hard on it's tyres. He is also significantly more experienced than LH (who is the youngest EVER world champion btw) and he has had the experience of being no 2 to MS.
Alonso is a cracking driver and that Renault has been getting better and better, but EVERY race he's won/done well in has been as much the result of good luck or excellent team strategy/judgment. Sure he's a skillful driver but I really don't think we've seen enough this season to say he's the best. KR has lost interest, which is a shame as he's an excellent driver and was a worthy champion last time out.
Vettel is an interesting one and I'd dearly love to see him in a Ferrari/McLaren to see exactly what he could do. The Torro Rosso has the Ferrari engine which has been a top power plant and the team seem to be fairly wealthy to say the least. It has been good to see him come through and if he keeps going I can see him being a world champion (would LOVE to see that for Red Bull!!!)
Kubica is a funny one, seems to lack consistency and just seems a touch jaded towards the end of the season. That is a shame in many respects as he seems to be a genuinely good driver.
As things stand, Hamilton has won the WDC and after some interesting decisions from the stewards, who should have left the drivers alone to actually race. He would have won more than Massa and have tied everything up in China if Spa's result had stood and anyone can see that he was by far the best driver on that day.
We are lucky to have so many good drivers around. We also have the internet and massive amount of media at our disposal. Whilst MS was somewhat subject to this spotlight towards the end of his career it was nowhere near like it is today. Senna, Prost, Piquet et al didn't have anywhere near this level of pressure. Their every mistake was not continually replayed right around the world ad available for 6 billion people to view every minute of every day. There was the odd replay but that was that.
Here's looking forward to next year with slicks and less rubbish aero.
