2008 British Grand Prix - Race 9/17

Not looking good weatherwise (for those of us attending)

The first rain of the event could fall on Thursday, with a lesser chance for the opening day of practice a day later.

Saturday, however, could be a wash-out, with some forecasts envisaging up to a 100 percent chance of rain.

Heavy showers - up to a 75 percent likelihood - could also fall on Sunday, when a sell-out crowd will gather at the Northamptonshire venue.

Bugger those of you attending, I just want a race that actually has some real action at the sharp end in it. Sadly, it seems that on certain tracks we need rain to achieve that aim. And even more sadly, I reckon Silverstone is firmly entrenched in that camp.

Seriously, guys and gals. I know the place has F1 history (on account of being the host of the first World Championship GP in 1950), and it has been the site of some wonderful race weekends over the years. The ones that stand in my mind? In no particular order:

1) 1992. "They love him and he loves them.....Nigel Mansell comes out of Luffield 1, into Luffield 2....."

*Such* a brilliant day. Not much of a race - the result was never in doubt, after all. But still. A race I shall always remember.

2) 2003. Rubens showing just how talented he is, making everyone else look a bit silly in the process. Who says you can't overtake in modern F1?.....

.....Oh. That'd be me, actually :o

That race was an aberration that almost made me think that F1 had turned a corner. I was disappointed in the end, but at least I got to see that race.

3) 2004. Yeah, not much really happened aside from Trulli making a proper job of stacking it. Oh, and it was Marc Gené's last race. But it was also a prime example of how to win a modern F1 race - Schumacher and Ferrari going for a strategy that none of the other front-runners were going for, and winning.

4) 1998. Amusing purely for the weather (being a tad on the damp side) and for the manner in which the race ended - on account of the complete balls-up that the stewards engaged in. You have to deliver notification of a penalty within 25 mins of the infraction, and they were 6 minutes outside that. Add that to the fact that they weren't even clear about what kind of penalty they were issuing, and it's not that surpsing that it ended the way it did. Not that it stops the Schumacher and Ferrari haters from decrying it as an example of Schumacher cheating the rules, of course....but **** 'em :)

5) 1985.....I think. The consequences of alcohol....I *think* it was '85 when Keke Rosberg did his proper balls-to-the-wall lap to claim pole position, managing the first ever +160mph lap there despite the race surface still drying from rain the previous day (which remained the fastest single lap in F1 until 2001). I know he probably shouldn't have won the 1982 title (Gilles would have, if Pironi hadn't screwed him at Imola and got him all riled up)....but the talent the guy had.....

6) 1991. Simply for the sights of Mansell giving Senna a ride on one of his sidepods and the post-race track invasion. It was also the first race for that iteration of the track, and was a success. It's a pity that the cars grew out of the place quite quickly.

*******

And that's the issue. The cars have outgrown this track. Hotlapping, I expect they're ******* brilliant. But to race, against other cars, with dirty air and the associated aero problems? Not so sure. Silverstone is a very fast track, but that works against it - too many corners where you can't follow someone without losing too much downforce.

Next year, I'm going to reserve judgement on the rule changes until they get to here and Magny-Cours (they keep claiming F1 won't go back....but I bet it does). If the racing improves here, then it's mission accomplished.

You watch - now I've typed that, this year's race will be epic. Hope springs eternal.....

I thought GP2 might be on, for some reason i was being told it was last weekend though!

It's that time of year, the merry-go-round that is F1. All teams will be looking to secure their lineup for next year.

I love this time of year. Sadly no Ralf Schumacher to laugh at this year, claiming he'll be world champion or something.

Shame to see DC going, one of the Sebastians going to replace him then, I guess? Hopefully Vettel.. I really think that boy could be good.

Vettel was always going to get the seat to be honest. I hinted at it a few months ago but could not go into to much detail.

To be fair, I think 99% of the people who watch F1 wouldn't be in the least bit surprised if he got the seat. He's put in some stunning drives in his short time in F1, and thoroughly deserves a chance at RBR, imo.
