2008 German GP - Race 10/18

I guess I became a Kimi fan when he looked like the only person with a chance of beating schumy and we had to have someone do it eventually!

So did you support Alonso, during the 2 years he beat MS? In the last few years, he is the only one who was able to beat the mighty MS/Ferrari.

With an engine that wasnt working correctly I think anyone who still had sight of the Championship in the last race (esp considering what happened in previoous race) would have panicked just seeing cars streaming past you

It was actually when Hamilton saw Alonso go past him that caused him to lose his head. In fact, in races proceeding this, we have seen this where Hamilton doesnt seem to think straight when Alonso is around him.

Not all drivers wouldve pannicked. I'm pretty damn sure that Prost, for example would not have pannicked. MS - I think he wouldve kept a cool head, as would've Alonso.

You must understand that time and time again, we have seen that Hamilton does lose his head a little and this is one aspect of his game he needs to sort out. Crashing into the back of Kimi (Canada), was a perfect example, where he saw his main title rival go past him in the pitlane and to this end, he completely forgot about the traffic lights, despite being aurally told.

not a hamster

richard hammond

I knew who you meant :D

(I dont think even the BBC would use a hamster for a commentary (might be more inciteful a few Ive heard though)

Maybe the position that he lost (and the extra points) more than the actual person

How did MS win his first championship - oooh by ramming someone off the track , thats really keeping a cool head

Anyway its impossible to tell - no-one else was in the same position so ....

(I have already commented on Hamilton needing to improve mentally, but I also think some people are too hard on the guy also given his age and inexperience, wasnt Alonso after all still at the back of the grid in his 2nd year in F1?)

Not heard anything on the side of who's fronting and commentating for the BBC next year, I doubt we will until the season is over either.

I'm still hoping they keep on Brundle, IIRC Pel McCarthy is commentating on Eurosport now, they could pinch him? Last ditch effort to get into F1 :D

MS had the soundness of mind to think, "Right, I'm out of this race, I must ensure that D.Hill also doesnt finish." I would say that is pretty calculated and cynical.

That may well be the case, but I'm not comparing Alonso in his 2nd year VS Hamilton in his 2nd year. I am comparing Alonso, as he is now VS Hamilton, as he is now.

No doubt hamilton is extremely talented and a good driver. However, to be great he needs to mature and prove he can keep his head.

Although Alonso has been a hot head over last season he has what it takes to be world champion. Hamilton is probably more talented than Alonso but until he gets the mental part right he wont be as a good a driver.

The next few races will prove if he is just "good" or will become "great". He has the potential to seriously bore us and "schumacher" us to death for the next ten years. I'd love that to be honest

Hamster has mentioned on numerous occasions on Top Gear that he has no interest in F1 and doesn't watch it on TV so I would be a little surprised if he was to do the commenting as he would have to have some knowledge of the drivers, teams and strategies.

Well if you (I dont mean you personally (:) are going to cheat as MS did then there is no point in the discussion at all - the whole point is to be within the rules

Well sorry but thats a ridiculous comparison, its stupid compariing someone with virtually no F1 experience with someone with several years previous, you are only as good as your own experiences

Of course LH is going to make mistakes thats what rookies do (Im sure Alonso made just as many out of the limelight at the back of the grid) - just because LH is at the front you are being harder on him

I saw it meant Kinetic Energy Recovery System - but whats its actually for?

Braking /Acceleration assistance or something?

Sounds quite dangerous if it can knock a guy off his feet (obviously it may not require too much eletrical current to do this, but on the other hand you dont want too many similar shocks either)

I think it is a a system that stores the energy that is lost thru braking so that the cars can run more fuel efficient (if that is it it is totally useless on a F1 car but I guess they do it to show that F1 is a bit green even though the cars only get ~4mpg :p )

the KERS system is used to turn kinetic energy (from braking) into electrical energy which is stored in a battaery and can be used to power the car's subsystems. More info here.

IIRC BMW are the first to market this technology on their own road cars with the EfficientDynamics models.
