2009 - 2010 Football Predictions Thread

I can't believe how many people actually think Man City will finish in the top 4? Their team has to gel before anything and considering most of their players will be new, I can't see them getting off to the best start and despite how much they've spent, its still not as good a team as any of the top 4.

Personally I think Arsenal are going to surprise people this season. I'm going for them to win the league with it being a very close race all season. If Arsenal don't, Chelsea will.

Agree about Man City. I'm surprised that a collection of good footballers chasing the dollar is being held up as the next big thing.

They will do well, but can't see them consistently performing well enough. You also have to take into account the volatility of some of the players and manager.

Personally think people are writing Man Utd and SAF off too easily. We may have lost The Greatest Footballer Ever TM (Trademarked by Ronaldo Corp lol) but we have also bought in a revitalised natural goal scorer as well as some respectable pace down the wing.

No doubt that Utd may struggle getting golden boot in the EPL, but I reckon we could have two or three players with 15+ EPL goals (Rooney and Berba getting majority of time on the pitch but Owen coming on regularly as impact sub) with hopefully the likes of Giggs, Vidic, Carrick and Valencia maybe getting 5 a piece or so (goals will be a lot more spread out now there isnt one main threat)

Chelsea will be up there and so will Liverpool , both easily capable of chasing the title into April and May, however I think Liverpool will loose a lot if / when Alonso moves to Madrid whoever they replace him with and with a few other sales I think the squad as a whole has been lessened even with the addition of Johnson. Chelsea are always a concern but it would be a bit worrying imo if a brand new manager (no matter how good he is) wins the league in his first season, Maureen did it I seem to recall (with a MASSIVE £££ injection) and Ancelotti is phenomenally good without doubt I just think the relentlessness of it may mean Chelsea are left a fraction wanting.

Unless we spend some of that money we've recouped recently we aren't going to be getting anywhere near the top of the table. I still think we have too much to be knocked out of the top 4 but last season proved we have squad issues and they've got even worse now rather than being addressed. First team i think we have as good as any, problem is if we lose Cesc or a CB (even RB now if Eboue goes) we are in big trouble. We still don't really have a proper DM, Song was much improved at the end of the season but i'm still not 100% satisfied with him. Also we have no replacement if he gets injured.

My league title prediction completely depends on whether Gerrard and Torres can stay fit. Also now that Alonso has gone (well pretty much certain now) we need someone of experience who can replace him. Doesn't exactly mean we need someone as good as him, just someone like a Didi Hamann who can spread it but has the experience not to do rash things. If these things happen then we'll win the league now that United's strength has been severely damaged :D

Rooney stays injury free he will score more than he ever has, Berbatov will suddenly become awesome, we will all wonder why we ever questioned him.

Nani will have another so-so season, Valencia will be awesome, we will return to the days of fast as **** wingers and be ripping teams to bits. Tosic/Park and Valencia/Nani are an excellent set of wingers.

I can see us playing great football without winning the league or CL, season after and I think we will be challenging for everything, year of transition I tell thee.

Good night, God bless,

We also have excellent TV presenters.

You honestly think Southampton will get relegated from League One?

We're not THAT bad :p Jaidi abouts to sign up, Graeme Murty, Dan Harding on board now, so we're getting a few more proven players to play alongside our youngsters. Just what we need. Don't think we'll go up though.

Don't worry. I got most of my predictions wrong last season.

On the other hand, maybe you should worry; my only real success last year was in the League One relegation section, when three of my four bets to go down actually did go down.

But I did pick Southampton primarily because of their -10 start to the season.

Dont think we'll have enough this season to win anything, very much get the impression that this season is going to be one for building from Harry.

Cant choose between Chelsea and Real for the CL, Chelsea will be a much tighter unit this season and Real could be bringing back the glory days

Can't escape the feeling that Man Utd will be rocked by Ronaldo's departure more than they think. Backing Liverpool to take advantage and just pip them to second, but also have a feeling Chelsea will push on next year. Arsenal to be too strong for any of the other challengers for fourth.

Backing Citeh as a cup team this year, but don't believe they'll be consistent enough to make the impression on the league they want to.

Villa winning the league cup is my wishful thinking coming to the fore. I just so desperately want some silverware. The Peace Cup hasn't sated that... ;)

Reckon we'll finish somewhere around 6th to 8th in the league. Could push on to challenge Arsenal for fourth again if Delph and Downing come good and Albrighton continues his Peace Cup form, we get two strikers playing together well and consistently, Cuellar steps up to fill Laursen's boots like I feel sure he's got the ability to do, and we sign a mobile centre half with decent distribution to play alongside him. To many ifs there, though, I fear...

The majority here feel that Scholes & Giggs have nothing left to offer us and the likes of Fletcher, Anderson, Nani & Park have nothing on Chelsea's Lampard & Essien, Liverpool's Gerrard and Mascherano yet yesterday our un-fancied duo of Carrick & Fletcher bossed much of the game against Chelsea's 4 man diamond. With no Ronaldo, Rooney will come into his own up front as will the likes of Nani & Berbatov. Our defence is without question the best in the league both in terms of quality and depth so there's no problem there either

When it became clear Ronaldo was going I would have tipped Liverpool to do the business this season but their loss of Alonso is far greater given their lack of options us on the other hand despite losing Ronaldo have got plenty of talent to go someway to replacing him, Valencia already showing amazing potential in his ability to beat a man as well as pick out a team mate from the wing

Arsenal for me are the real dark horses of this coming season, they could just as easily challenge all season as they can be out of the whole picture by October

Top 5 in PL

After seeing the first few weeks of the season and seeing how the teams have performed (or not) so far lets see everyones prediction for the top 5 at the end of the season. No list of just names please, give a reason for your prediction. Heres mine;

1. Chelsea - Should win it by a mile by what I have seen so far, Ancelloti has seem to bring back a Mourinho vibe to Chelsea. By that I mean a solidity and a look that regardless of anything they will just grind out a result as they have done in some difficult games so far. Even if they struggle against the other top teams (which I personally doubt they will) I can see them being so consistent otherwise that they would still claim the title.

2. Arsenal - Disappointing result against Man Utd but they were cheated by Rooneys clever play for the penalty and the shocking decision to not give Arshavin a penalty for Fletchers challenge. Despite this from what I have seen I think they will be a lot more consistent against the smaller teams with a much more talented and consistent looking squad and the talent they have should see them through most of the bigger games. They have a lot of standout players who will help them this season, Arshavin looks fantastic, Van Persie has stepped up, Vermealen (or however you spell it) seems solid, Fabregas is as sharp as ever and Diaby when not scoring own goals looks good.

3. Man Utd - Only due to the fact that they know how to grind out results and get wins as shown yesterday. Compared to prior seasons they are extremley poor. Berbatov is still yet to convince leaving them short up front, the defence is still good but the Midfield is barely top 5 good enough. Carrick is poor in the big games, Valencia looks average, Nani still has a lot to prove and Giggs and Scholes are getting on. Should still do OK but a poor team for Man UTd standards.

4. Man City - Hughes seems to be eventually getting his view across to the team, which is get a result regardless which was what he had going for him at Blackburn. Things will only get harder for them and injuries will cost them a lot as they are still not the best squad but they should do very well this year if they can keep people fit. Lescott and Barry should be a brilliant signings for them.

5. Liverpool - I am not even sure if they will quite even manage this position, defence is a shambles at best, Johnson seems more interested in going forward and they do not have a left back to speak of. They do not have a second central midfielder and I am not convinced by their left winger and Kuyt, whilst brilliant, is not a winger. There biggest loss will be Xabi Alonso, he unlocked teams and won games for them, they will struggle massively without someone of his influence. If Gerrard and Torres stay fit all year they might nick forth, but I would not even be sure of that.

Tottenham will probably finish 6th followed by Villa then Everton who look surprisingly poor so far this season.

Liverpool have Fabio Aurelio at left back who was sensational last season, scoring that fantastic free kick at Old Trafford. Kuyt got into double figures in terms of goals from the right wing so I'm not sure what you're getting at with him. Whilst I admit we will miss Xabi Alonso he did not unlock teams, he was a play-maker, we've bought Alberto Aquilani who is a more attacking midfielder and should score more goals however he isn't proven in the premier league so might not be an instant success. The defense is a concern, but remember Carragher is still recovering from injury and we're still missing Skrtel and Agger, no excuses for poor marking though. There is no way Citeh will finish above us this season.

There are still over 100 points to play for so quite early to predict things.

Look at Man U's start last year and how that all finished up.

But if asked to pick the top five based on things at the minute I would have to say:

1. Chelsea- Good experienced squad and thus far have looked very strong.
2. Man U- See above. Will miss Ronaldo and Tevez though.
3. Liverpool- Stuttering start but will pick up pace when injured players get back in the side.
4. Arsenal- Not as good as the teams above. Simples.
5. Citeh- Hughes is not a good enough manager to get the best out of the squad.
