2009 Ashes Series - England vs. Australia **Spoilers**

Exactly. Speaking as an Australian, I can't believe that your team is actually celebrating. What is there to celebrate? Several days of mediocre cricket from a Test team hopelessly outclassed by the visitors? Is that the best England has to offer these days?

A draw gets you no closer to winning. You could draw all five games and we'd still retain the Ashes. This game is supposed to be about winning, not stonewalling for 40 minutes in the desperate hope of rain. Yet the Beeb is hailing the result as some sort of achievement. Bizarre.

If it had been the other way around and Australia had sneaked a lucky draw after being outclassed all match, your team would be celebrating just the same  Any team would. We realise it isn't as good as a win but it's infinitely better than what looked like a certain defeat until this evening.

The Australians should be more concerned about the fact that they weren't good enough to take twenty wickets in the game.

LOL shouldnt it be the other way round;)...that England should be very concerned that they couldnt even bowl the Aussies out in their first innings??...that 4 of them made centuries when not one of the english batters made a single one??.

Lets hope they manage to do a better job next week at Lords or the Aussies are going to batter them into the ground.

Personally i dont think celebrating a draw is something to be proud...like i said in my last post...England were the much stronger bowling attack on paper but in reality they turned out to be damp squibs compared to the Aussies.

England got lucky with the time and the rain yesterday as this game would have been won by the Aussies if they had another half hr to play.

The lost overs were made up today.

Yes if the game had gone on indefinitely then the Aussies would have won, of course. They won a moral victory and if it had been boxing they'd have won on points. But it's cricket, you have to win within the five days and the allotted overs. They didn't so it's a draw. Them's the rules :p

Ahh ok i didnt know that they made up the lost overs...i wasnt watching the game as i was busy doing other things and i only just saw the result when i got home about 20 mins ago.

Oh well looking forward to next weeks test at Lords...it will be interesting to see if England can beat the Aussies there as they havent done so for quite some time now.

Oh dear, Spawn and his hatred for England again

I sometimes wonder why he came to this green and pleasant land.

WTF? You're talking twaddle as well, compared to where we were just after lunch then I damn well will celebrate holding out for a draw. This does get us closer to gaining the ashes back than if Australia had won. What an utterly retarded comment.

Of course the five days as a whole are extremely disappointing as we were utterly awful for four and a half of them but to escape that with a draw is a great result for us.

We'd be happy, but we'd hardly be celebrating. In practical terms a draw or a win is all the same to us, since England doesn't gain anything from a draw, while Australia does. You can't win the Ashes with 5 draws, but we can retain them even if that's all we get.

England can't afford to be happy with a draw.

Of course we can, it means we're level rather than being one behind so it's a better result for us. Again, Australia were celebrating a very similar result four years ago, because to turn a near certain defeat into a draw is great result, considering the circumstances of the match.

No it doesn't get you any closer to gaining the Ashes. Even if you draw repeatedly for the next four games, Australia still retains the Ashes. England needs to win games to take the Ashes. She can't win them by drawing.

And that says it all, really: "a draw is a great result for us". Go England!

I agree that it's better than a loss for England, but it's still not as good as a win. As I said: you can draw the next four games, and you still won't get the Ashes. At some point you actually have to start winning.

This is a great result, it's like being 3-0 down after 70 mins and still getting a point out of the game.
We deserved to be 1 down after this match, we're not, that gives us a far better chance of winning the series.
Simples:/

But we are closer to winning the ashes as we now, in theory, only have to win one match whereas if we'd lost we would have had to have won 2. As dirtydog has alluded to, your point makes absolutely no sense.

And good one for taking my point completely out of context, given the position we were in at lunch today, a draw was a great result, in the context of the series a draw doesn't help us much but seen as we were virtually nailed on to lose the game then I'll happily take it right now and we can move onto Lords.

A great result for England but can't say things look too well for them as far as this series goes. Aussies still have Lee to come back and even Clarke could come in for them, both bowlers have done well against England and will thrive in these conditions.

England really need to review the bowling options, surely they must have better bowlers?
