If they did that to me i'd tell them i've removed there assumed right of access to my property and are now commiting tresspassing and harasment and if they don't leave or ever come round again i'll call the police and have them prosecuted.

The police couldn't prosecute. Trespass is a civil wrong and they couldn't be convicted of harassment.

What sort of property is it (they have this already from the address/council tax)
What is self contained/shared.
How many bedrooms
What sort of central heating I use
Who is my landlord
How many cars are owned by the household
Do I stay anywhere else for more than 30 days a year and what the address is (yeah right I'm going to give those details!!).
How my health is
Why is religion the only voluntary question?
Where I work
What I do
How I travel to work
How many hours a week I work
Any visitors I have on the 27th march

A lot of the questions I completely appreciate and understand, like ethnic background, language, what passports you hold, what languages you speak, do you intend on living in the UK etc... are all valid, are you here with family, where are your family from etc... Am I employed etc... That's all relevant and cool.

I don't get why any of the above is relevant to mapping out the population.

Don't get me wrong, I'll answer all the questions as accurately as I can - though I need to gauge from my HR manager how much info I am to put on my job description for example, and some of the items I will put as little info as I'm allowed to. I'm not against the census at all, I just think it could be done more accurately/better.

Much more expensive to try and collate that data rather than just asking you while they're a it.

Those all seem pretty good questions to "map the population"

that's weird though

found out today at work that they even do a census in prisons at the same time, which i find strange considering they already know who is in prison and exactly how many of them there are as they count them six times a day!

Come on Will, surely you can see how useful it might be to know how people travel to work, etc etc?

To a certain degree yes... but the census (from memory) doesn't have enough flexibility, and as such the results won't be very accurate.

Some of things are absolute - like ethnicity, english as a first language, and how much of your family is here (if foreign), and so on... but the details of what work I do?? And transport - well things change so drastically in 10 years that what I write down may well change. However, my ethnicity and languages are less likely to.

it may well be more for the historical data in 100 years time.

Or too look at trends over several decades in how people work.

Fair comments - like I said I'm not against doing it. I just wish you had more flexibility in answering the questions i.e. "other" option where you can type/write in your own response. :) I understand the need of it - it just seems a little half-finished??

analysing the data is an issue then, the more flexibility the more it has to be "read" rather than simply processed by computer.

stockhausen, have you got anything sensible to add to your thread other than the sort of comments I'd expect from a 13 year old?

No stockhausen, it is you who cannot read.

meghatronic's question was direct at magick as far as I can tell from the quote - and magick has not given a reason for not wanting to fill in the form.

Not that there's much point in asking him mind you - the response will just be a David Icke inspired tirade about lizard men and the like.

This thread has it all : idiots in abundance, a few who know what they're taking about, the typical RAWR! keyboard warriors, humourous lines, stupidity on a frankly alarming although not unexpected scale, and a little bit of rational debate.

It's like every GD post ever made all rolled up into one!

I think that's the date the census is released. The question is used to work out how people are getting on with their neighbours. If they found that no-one had any visitors on that day, then it would indicate a serious problem!

Also, as others have said. These results are used as a snapshot and compared with results from the past. So for the question above, they would be able to track how much face-to-face communication people have compared to 10, 50 or 100 years ago.

No its not, it's because they want to survey everyone, but obviously if they only survey people at their own address they would miss everyone who is not at home.
