2012 Mac Mini

Well the mini arrived today so before any mods I hooked it up via HDMI to the Philips monitor and the quality was shocking, text very unreadable. It's running at native 1080p.

I tried the monitor via DVI on a PC and it's perfect, so it must be the HDMI on either the Mac or Monitor.

I have ordered a cheap Display port to DVI adaptor and gonna try again tomorrow... grrrr

Adjust the overscan in the display properties and it'll be fine.

is this on the monitor itself.. it has a on / off setting, thats all

sorry for being thick. reading around a lot of people are having this kind of problem....

In OSX go to System Preferences - Display and adjust the overscan. I can't remember the exact details as I only had the mini hooked up via HDMI briefly.

there is a underscan option only.... and that does nothing to help. I'll try the display port converter tomorrow

On another note I just installed the samsung SSD, and even though I consider myself quite good with hardware / electronics etc, it scared the hell outta me. Once done once though it aint so bad I guess, as I have to pull it apart another day to refit the old drive as storage.

OS just reinstalling fingers crossed....

Managed to get the cable and whole kit for mounting a second HDD including screwdrivers (I needed some) for £47. Bit expensive but still much cheaper than what Apple charge, especially if you already have a drive.

Bought an SSD though :D

I cant imagine how fast it's gonna be with SSD, it flew on the stock 5400rpm HD :-)

Yep, loving the performance from this little thing, only the i5 but its now got 16gb ram, 256gb SSD and the stock 500gb in it (well, it will when the cables and everything arrive)

My old pc wasn't too bad, but this is infinitely better :)

As the hard drives aren't user serviceable it invalidates the warranty putting your own in, but can you perform it without being noticeable if you were to put the original drive back?

Is it the same process as the '11 models? Just watched a video and the process looks quite involved :o

Yes I think it's the same, I used the guide on iFixit. Though you could put back easily, all those little back anodised torx screws look like they have been undone very easily unless super careful.

In the guide it shows them ripping the black plastic film from the old drive... This protects the pcb on the old HD, but the SSD doesn't need this as no exposed circuits like a normal HD, so bypass that bit

I had one heart attack in that after putting together the SSD wasn't recognised. Turned out when putting the final screw through bottom plate into SSD it dislodged the connector going from SSD to the motherboard. Was easily fixed though

Just bought the gigabit TP Link powerlines and it's maxed out my 60mb connection, so hopefully never need to use wi-fi again with the Mini.

I'd like an SSD and I'm mulling over upping the RAM to 16gb. I know it's likely overkill for what I need (in terms of RAM) but is it worth doing anyway since it's relatively cheap and it can never hurt to have too much RAM?

I thought it was a no brainer really, 8GB Ram was around £40 and I got 16gb for £47.

It can only help the resale value as well.
