2012 Mac Mini

Think Iam goin to get the base model. Will I be able to upgrade to max 16GM ram an add an extra HDD SSD? I guess neither will be a problem.

Yep! Iv done that too, waiting patiently for my data doubler kit to turn up from America (it's been over a week) to get my M4's into the thing (can't stand the mechanical hdd).

Yes, I bought the base model and added an extra SSD and popped 16gb ram in. Much cheaper than buying from Apple.

Thanks folks! Just what I was after! I've read quite a few people have upgrade the mid-range mini and just wanted to check the base one could be upgraded the same.

How much where the parts if you don't me asking? Iam in tow minds too wait a year until I do the upgrades...not sure yet.

macrumors just posted an article saying the HDMI screen problem is being worked on by Intel/Apple but no ETA for the fix.

Perfect! Been tracking this closely, very glad they are finally working on a fix! :)

I got a Geil 16GB 1600Mhz kit for ~£47 IIRC.

The kit/cable for mounting the second hard drive is the most expensive thing though, Think it worked out about £37 from OWC, But there are other places to get them from. Ifixit being one of them. Both are American though and there are English based sources.

Has anyone had any experience with this fusion drive? I am fine upgrading the RAM but unsure if I want to mess around with the HD. Also as a media server, I presume the base model is good enough? I did want the quadcore but its a bit too much for my liking :).

Yeah I paid £60 for my crucial memory kit, didn't realise I could have saved a tenner or so...

OWC supplied the datadoubler kit but I am pretty sure mine is stick in customs as its been over a week now since I got the dispatched email :(

Getting my mate from Apple to get the base dual core i5 with staff discount. Couldn't decide for days whether to get a Mac Mini, 21.5" or 27" iMac but at the end of the day, I don't have the desk space to squeeze an iMac alongside my current mini-ITX build.

Gonna upgrade the RAM to 16GB one day from Crucial, but first thing I'll do is swap the Crucial M4 128GB SSD from the mini-ITX and the 5400rpm 500GB SATA drive around. The Mac Mini is going to be my main everyday system but I don't need much storage on it.

I'll get a maxed out 27" iMac sometime when I move out and have more space in my room! For now, I'll keep the mini-ITX for gaming and upgrade the CPU and GPU whenever needed. Best I keep Mac OS X and Windows on separate machines because when I had the 2010 MacBook Pro, I hated having to reboot back and forth.

Got my data doubler kit all sorted! Took AGES to get the logic board back in and the 2 M4's to line up though.

Couldn't get 3 of the screws for the airport bit to go back in but it works fine so I am not too fussed for now.

Just waiting patiently for everything to copy over :)

Well with the iMac release today, I think it will be a mini for me. Can get discount through work, and don't need a monitor, and the space saved by a nice little i7 mini will be splendid.

You're effectively paying Apple £200 for an additional 128gb SSD. The "fusion" part is handled by the os and already built in.

So it really comes down to weighing up your priorities on cost/convenience/piece of mind (warranty)

Thats my plan aswell, my friend can get me 17% off. Is that the same for you? Anyone know if you can use staff discount in conjunction with this?

The Crucial M4 128GB SSD seems to be the HDD to go for, what kinda price am I looking at?

Although I currently own an iMac - mid 2011, speaking for myself I think the Mini is the way to go in the future. There is no way in the world I am going to spend £1600+ pounds on a 21.5 inch iMac. The base model has been ruined by Apple in the latest upgrade and for me the 27" is both to large and to expensive. I shall get a Mini when it's time and mate it to a nice IPS display.

Ordered my mini last night should have it tomorrow! Excited about learning all about OS X

Need to decide over what KB to go for now and get the apple mice too :D

You do want the official apple keyboard ;) (I have the wired one)

Also don't get the magic mouse (not a fan) instead you want the magic trackpad (I think its magic anyway) best thing ever! Still have my little logitech v470 for mouse needs but its all about the trackpad.

I have the wired, only because I was using it on my old pc before hand (and I had dreams of playing civ2 which never worked but needed the number pad).

I have been tempted to get the wireless one a few times but the wired is good enough for me at the moment and a bit cheaper. It's all down to price and if you want the number pad or not really. I generally feel I could live without the number pad now but I do like having 2 usb ports on the back of my wired keyboard.

Sorry its not all that helpful, both are just as good as each other, just with different pro's really.
