2012 predictions

I'd really like to be proved wrong but I think Seb will do it.

There are so many what-ifs that we won't start to see being answered until after this weekend...

But again, this all depends on someone other than Vettel being on pole, and I'm not convinced anyone is going to have Red Bull beat on qualifying pace.

I agree completely - I just hope McLaren preferably, but anyone (at the front) can start faster than RBR, so that SV cant get that lead up immediately, that would improve the racing no end straight away

There are 3 things that Vettel does for the start of the race:
1. he gets pole (so posts an unbelievably quick lap in Q3 - not easy to do)
2. on race starts, he is rarely overtaken (so he consistently is one of the best starters in F1)
3. he is then able to driver faster than anybody else in the first 2 laps, to such a point where the car behind can no longer activate the DRS.

In order to stop Vettel, another driver will have to out perform Vettel in at least 2 of the 3 points I've listed. And unless the rival driver has a better car, I can't see how anybody in F1 can do this.

IMO Alonso is a better driver, but in outright speed (especially in qualifying and the opening 2 laps), I think Vettel is better. Hamilton is probably the only guy who can do the job (ie. out perform Vettel in 2 of the 3 points, above), but he is likely to have a weaker car.

The only way I see that any driver is going to beat Vettel to this year's title, is if they have a better car. Our only hope is that McLaren deliver.

Yep, totally agree with that.

I think getting a better start will be the most difficult thing to do. F1 starts are all fairly similar now, and you would not only have to get a good one, but also hope Vettel gets a bad one.

Therefore, the focus need to be on Qualifying and first lap pace. Basically, we need a car and driver combination (or preferably more than 1) that is faster over a single, balls out, foot the floor lap.

And I personally don't think its going to happen :(

That was last year when he had a huge car advantage. When he had marginally a better car in 09 or 10 he made mistakes. I'm not going to knock him for making the absolute best of last years car because he was almost faultless until the conditions gave someone a run at him.

His whole package was by far the best of the field last year, so he rightly won the title at a canter. I imagine he will do the same this year.

Wasn't a lot of Vettel's early pace due to the way they heated the tyres? If the other teams do that then he could find it much more difficult.

Quite irrelevant due to the car he is in, but I would say Kimi would be the fastest driver over a single lap all things being equal. Of course it's moot though.

Really? After 2 years out, no experience of cars with this wheelbase (longer due to larger fuel tank), and no experience of Pirelli rubber, you still think he would beat Vettel, Alonso, Hamilton, Button, Schumacher, Webber, Massa and Rosberg?

Really?

I have not seen you around the F1 forums for the last few months. Where have you been? Is everything ok?

Fine mate, many different reasons. :)

A. Wasn't sure I was going to care because I wasn't intending to get Sky. Friend kindly donated a sky go account to me until I make my mind up :D

B. I decided I wouldn't spend the year arguing for instance that Alonso is this that and the other and putting forward lengthy debates on the why's and wherefores because what's the point. How many times in the last 5 years have you seen someone on an internet forum go "You know what considering all you have said I have re-evaluated my view on Lewis" etc etc. Regardless of the points anyone puts forward no one ever changes the view that they entered the thread with, so why bother :D Feel free to flag up all the times this year when it happens. In fact make a list.

Hopefully this year I won't get dragged in and can just concentrate on the technical aspects that interest me more. ;)

C. Most importantly my son, spending time with him is more valuable to me than arguing where Lewis and Jenson lost points. He's at Center Parks this week with his mum so I have some time to browse the F1 section :D

It's not impossible, Kimi is a very quick driver all things being considered, just if he applies himself is the issue.

I understand.

I am pretty much willing to get into any debate, except for the EBD. I refuse now to discuss the blown diffusers and the way exhaust gases are blown.

Hamilton
2 button
3 vettel
4 schui

Is this the order you are hoping for OR what you believe will actually happen?

It's not impossible, Kimi is a very quick driver all things being considered, just if he applies himself is the issue.

Applying one's self is one of the most important aspects in any job/sport. In Kimi's last year, he was getting beaten by Massa. Essentially Massa had become join No.1. What saved Kimi's reputation that year, was when Massa was put in hospital.

Unless he has had some form of epiphany, I believe Kimi is a spent force and like MSc, is now trading purely on past glories.

Kimi had a brilliant 2nd half to 2009, think he outscored everyone else IIRC, now many Ferrari fans believe his performances only arrived when he realised Ferrari were lining up Alonso and he was going to need a new drive, which goes back to my applying himself quote :) Look at how Fisichella did in that Ferrari shows something about how well Kimi was driving.

2008 Kimi was well in there until France and Canada really hurt his chances, then Ferrari seemed to back Massa.

Don't get me wrong, I would love to see Kimi back up the front. I just think he is really on the back foot at the moment with all the changes.

Give him a year to get back up to speed and you never know. It does depend a lot on the Lotus though.

Here's a question:
When Kimi was going to Ferrari (after MSc was retiring), Ferrari, on the advice of MSc, went for Kimi. MSc apparently stated that he believed that Kimi was the man best capable of taking his place, to lead Ferrari.

Now, at the time, Alonso had beaten MSc the previous year. And at the time MSc announced his retirement, Alonso was leading the current WDC.

Why did Ferrari not go for Alonso? If memory serves me correct, Alonso had not signed for McLaren (for 2007), so he would've been available.

Why did MSc not advise his team to do everything possible to get Alonso?

Alonso signed to join McLaren in 2007 at the beginning of 2006, possibly even late 2005, either way it was massively early. It was at a time when Renault were unsure if they would continue in F1 so Alonso secured his future elsewhere when Renault couldn't give him the guarantees.

Edit: December 19th 2005 his 2007 contract with McLaren was announced.
