2013 - Morba's Cake fed Strongman Log.

Deadlifts:

Hang on, what do you mean nobody wants to do deadlifts as you did squats the night before?! Muppets!

Bench:

Rare we do a flat bench session, should be interesting.

warmups
db flat bench
30kgx20
30x10
45kgx10

flat bb bench
70kgx10
110x10
110x8
120x6
130x5
130x5
140x2
150x1
160x1
170x1 PB
190xf
190x1 - Not counting this as a PB as there was some assistance from the spotter. He says that it wouldn't of taken more than 10kg off it though, so 180 should have been possible. Next time.

Thoughts:
wanted to do deads last night. I was in the mood for them and could feel that I was feeling good. Wanted to pull 260kg. Instead we did bench, so I PB'd on that instead lol.

Benching felt very comfortable. We turned the bench around so that the part that you would sit on (when inclined) was actually supporting our shoulders and back. This was more stable and a little wider.
The 150,160 and 170 were pretty easy, which was nice.
190 was recommended. I talked myself out of it on the first attempt, lowered it a few inches then it just dropped to my chest and stayed there.
Was verbally slapped by all 3 others with me and told to concentrate as I could do it.
Nice steady lower, tight at the bottom, press press press.... grinded it out and racked it.
All 3 said that a lot of people would claim that, but I'm not interested unless its all me.

10kg jump :P i think for bench it's a case of not training it for ages, but doing plenty of accessories that can help it (all my over head and incline log is doing wonders for my triceps).
Regular benching would help my bench, but its not going to help my strongman at the moment.
It's been a long time since I had training partners who were able to give me the confidence to bench, that's the main thing for me :)

Small events session, just some farmers walk (wanted to do yoke as well but got called out for work)

15 metres down slope, 15 metres up:
(weight is weight in each hand, so double for total weight)
20kg
60kg

15m up or down (3 of us, taking it in turns to do 15m from where you are, so youd start at top or bottom then do 15m only and hand over, kinda like a relay)
80kg x 3
100kg x 2
120kg x 2

Thoughts:
Some actual decent speed while moving. Pickups weren't an issue, grip was fine. I was well happy with this.
Must have done the 120kg each time in just over 10 secs, which is bloody good for me!

Rubbish overhead session. Nobody was up for it, wrong mood for us all. Weird one.

strict axle:
40kgx lots
60kgx20
70x10
80x10
90x5
100x3
110x1 - slight assistance from spotter, he says he did nothing but I could feel hands on my elbows so not counting it as a PB.

Keg fun:
60kg kep press x 5
then double underhand overhead with a hold overhead for time.
Not me in the vid, bloke clearly needs more cake.
The clean is hard as hell and the balance while holding over head is hard as hell!

Then same keg but cleaning it to shoulder then pressing it but the barrel was vertical instead of horizontal - now this was stupid hard to balance while pressing!

Then some 1 handed clean and press of an empty keg (around 10kg i think).
Some interesting attempts and some good things. Then I figured it would be easier to sling it upright and catch it on a flat hand (vertical keg again) lol

No vids as we were all trying not to die under others failed attempts, but good fun :D

Benchy poos:

Warm ups
Bar x lots
70x10
70x5
110x5
110x5
130x5
150x3
160x1
170x1
190x1 - PB
200xf

Incline log
70x10
90x5
110x5
130x5
140xf - triceps just too tired by now
110x10

Thoughts:
Bench was lol silly tonight. Each rep got better as more weight was added.
170 was fast, 190 was "wtf". Seriously. It's like my mind said "plant your feet, strong base, power from the floor" and my press was faster than the spotter could keep up with. Both were just looking at my silly lol.
200 on the bar, I got cramp from trying leg drive again.
Slow down, touch, press..... grind..... It went up, a good 4" off my chest. Triceps died and couldn't finish it.
Wow!

**** deadlift session. Wanted to try a PB before normality is no longer.

Warm ups
70x10
110x5
160x5
200x3
220x1
240x1
260xf
220xf

Thoughts
Not sure what went wrong, 260 was nice off the floor to about 6" then my whole left side just ached from trap down to forearm.
It was the hand that I had swapped for mixed grip, thinking that might have been the issue (been doing double over while using straps mostly so this was a change).
220 felt bad so left it.
Crap.

Overhead night tonight, might have to be strict again as knees hurt and its feeling cold outside!

Need to try some one motions for time, my comp has 100kg log for reps, I want to be one motioning as many reps as I can in that time before needing to use my legs!

Log clean and strict press:

Warmups
70x10
70x10
90x5
90x3
100x3
105x1
110x1 - PB

Push press, minimal legs as I hadn't been using them so wasn't gonna try too hard:
115x1
120x1 - equal PB, happy with this
125xf - tris dead.

Seated axle press(clean from floor, sit, press):
40x10
80x8
90x5
100x5

Standing strict circus DB press:
33kg
5xleft , 5xright
38kg
5xleft , 5xright

Dead.

Thoughts:
Happy with strict press and small amount of push press.
Seated axle felt hard, full cleaned 100kg without issue though which is good :)

Yeah, wasn't planning on doing PP at all and to start at a weight just below my PB is silly, but more weight was being added to the log and I didn't want to sit around doing nothing for a while :D

My legs suck :( lol

Squats

warmups
60x10
60x10

we then got the tyres out and the kegs and did squatting till the tyres touched the kegs (for some this was a touch above parallel, for the taller ones it was about parallel.
Weight? We think that standard setup (bar, 2 wheels, 2x15kg, 2x5kg) was about 120kg, but could be 130kg, for this I'll say 120kg though we all agreed that top weight felt heavier.

120x10
120x5
150x6
150x5

removed kegs to do normal depth
180x2 - everyone else was thinking this was about 190-200, think we need to weigh the wheels again
150x5
120x5

Done.

My knees felt horrific and I wasn't happy squatting at all tbh. Bag of ****.

deads:

200x5
220x5
220x5
230x3
240x1
240x1
250x1
260xf - ffs, just above the knee, I don't hitch so had to drop
220x5
220x5
220x5

GHRs
BW x 5

Thoughts:
Spent sunday being burned while one of the blokes I train with came 2nd at Southern Englands strongest u105. Awesome day, but being a bald ginger this ruined me. Got sun stroke and was sick over night.
Monday was spent feeling like crap and not eating much, so wasnt expecting much of a deadlift session tbh.
We've swapped mondays to deads from overhead so that we can still do squats on a thurs (heavy deads then squats was becoming counter productive for us all).

No speed on my reps, but all were dead stop (I have a tendency to smash out reps with touch n go).

Happy with the volume, will try for 220x6 for sets next week, 8 weeks till my comp, want a comfortable 12 reps at least.

Log session:

warmups
strict press (clean first rep)
70kg x 10
70x5
90x5
90x5
100x5 (2 pushpress)

push press
110x3
110x3
110x3
110x3
110x2 - failed the 3rd rep, triceps fried
90x8

seated axle, clean from floor:
95kgxf. Had nothing in me to press it. dead.

conditioning:
90kg atlas stone shouldering, 10 reps as fast as possible
10x 120secs

then things got silly.

atlas stone pressing. Ok this is stupid as ****, especially without tacky as the bloody thing wants to fall on your head as you press it. Physically cannot lockout due to position of hands and elbows!
lots of attempts, 1 good rep. crazy stuff.

thoughts:
knees weren't feeling good today, so wasnt looking forward to push press. Wanted 5x3 110kg log though so had to grin and bear it. Was hard work, but only failed the final rep of final set. Awesome! Will put the weight up to 112.5kg next time.
Killed my tri's doing log though so seated press was non existent.

stone shouldering is fun and easy to set up. Deceptively knackering especially with bad knees and after a hard workout lol.

Stone pressing is just stupid ****. Good fun though :D

Stag do over the weekend, so no events training (2 weekends in a row, not good!).

Monday deadlifts, after a weekend stag do. nice..

warmups
60x10
110x10
150x10
190x5
210x5
230x3
255x2 (recent PB for a pretty easy double).
then we decided to kill ourselves:
170 5x3 fast. rest period was while 3 others did their 3 reps. so 3 reps, as soon as off the bar next person on. keep going for 5 sets. not touch n go.
150x4 (same format as above but 1 set)
110x5 (again same as above, fast).

150kg+red bands doubled over. 2x5

GHRs
1. Ha! hams were ****ed.

Thoughts:
Apparently this is similar to the way Loz trains his deads (work up to a heavy double then strip the weight and do fast 6x3 and then banded work).
Lovely volume, nice and fast knackering volume.

I liked the working up to a heavy double. That's almost normal for me. But the 170 5x3 almost killed me lol. All shouting at each other, GO GO NOW FASTER and getting out of breath lol.
No straps allowed for that part obviously!

255x2 was DOH with straps, which felt better than my previous alternate with straps at heavy weight.

Log session:

Was expecting a good night and it started off reasonably well.

warm ups
70kgx10 strict
70x10push press (felt odd at a light weight)
90x5 strict
90x5 pp
110x5 pp
115x3 pp

working sets
112.5x3
112.5x1 - ****, thumb screaming at me
112.5x3 - nope this is horrid
112.5x1 - giving up on this now :(

got the axle out instead, banded strict press thumbless.

60 + red bands - x 5 - not too bad
80 + red bands x 3 - still too much pressure on base of thumb.

game over

thoughts:
115x3 was easy enough, work sets weren't really a problem with the weight, push pressing seemed relatively ok with my knees.
for my thumb (the only bone ive had confirmed as broken (years ago)) to stop me doing anything is rather ****ing annoying tbh.

Squats:

Got up the gym, warmed up, started some light sets and thumb was killing. Really not liking this at all so gave up. Unfortunately we don't have machines so i was kinda ****ed for anything to do so came home.
If we werent doing a stone session tomorrow I would have headed down virgin today and made use of some leg machines :(

Be interesting to see how stones go, hoping I don't need to use my thumb for balance too much, if I do then I'll just hammer the **** out of the 120kg stone as I can do that without too much thumb usage I think.

In good news, I have purchased a pair of these:
