Trying to be green is awesome, not because its green. But because f1 is meant to be the pinnacle of technology in motorsport(As you yourself say). What is so technically advanced about a NA v8? nothing at all, and more than that it's an irrelevant format in todays world.
The new power units on the other hand are extremely technical and reasonably cutting edge, would still like to see a less restricted rules on the ERS part.
Its also more relevant to manufacturing. Without the rule change we would have one less engine manufacturer this year, and two less engine manufacturers next year.

At the end of the day, noise is nice. But f1 is about technology and that's exactly what the new PU have brought back after years of stale inferior technology. with 99% of focus on aero. Which is a waste of money and fans understand even less than with mechanical workings.

So we're back to development(albeit it short lived) away from aero. They also have huge amounts of torque which gives good racing and makes drivers work again, yes power is marginally down, but they've never had so much torque throughout the rev range.

People hate change, but people will get used to it. I bet by mid season most people will be used to it.

Accidentally voted I don't like them lol

But I do like them, the lower volume is great. Can hear car/tyre noises better, can hear interviews and team radio better.

I don't think you can say that doing lap times on a par with last year while using 40% less fuel is just marketing BS.
On a par?

Fastest lap 2013 - 1’29.274 - Kimi Raikkonnen, Lap 56.
Fastest lap 2014 - 1’32.478 - Nico Rosberg, Lap 19.

Looks slower to me.

Still bothers me somewhat, that F1 is on this whole 'green' thing, and yet they still insist on using pretty much bog-standard petrol. I would have thought by now, they'd be implementing alternative fuels blends such as the Green E15 fuel used in Nascar, or the E100 used by Indycar.

Firstly you are comparing the times in Aus last year, after a LONG period of engine stability, so its hardly a fair comparison, also, as said before, huge aero changes, no blown diffusers, fuel limits (realtime consumption/and overall weight), engine map limits, lower RPM max, different tyres.

In reality, its very impressive that they are that close this early on! Start comparing times mid-season, and I think you will potentially see the new cars being faster.

Thats VERY impressive...

Whatever the marketing spin is, its not really for green purposes anyway. Its about keeping it industry relevant, keeping the speed at a sensible level, otherwise, we should just allow unlimited fuel, revs, active suspension and skirts. Then almost all the old style circuits would have to be abandoned, as cornering speeds would be so high that new simple and much larger circuits would be needed, as well as much larger separation from the spectators. Then the drivers would need G-suits and more advanced crash cells. It would spiral into a nonsense that would see one team dominate with the most money and resources.

Well at least a 8 month old baby can now do a F1 face car sound.

Put your tongue in between your lips and blow or if you're older have a hot curry and wait.

You don't watch much endurance racing then?

There's always the big blocks you've got across the pond, then if you carry on across the other pond there are more big blocks. The F1 engines are currently trying to be awesome, not sound awesome.

Fortunetly I live close to Mallory & Donnington so I get to hear Real engines. :p

TV muted maybe?

Come off it mate you know the sound just wasn't there, Commentators chatting & me hearing them whilst an F1 car starts up just feet away is not noise. Well I s'pose it is some kind of noise but more like the Doris getting in the way of the telly with her Hoover. :p

I think hearing the tyres, crowd and other things is quite cool. I expect most of us have heard at least the V8s and V10s in person, which were great, but you sit there with ear plugs in any way? I think the feel if it (in the rib cage) will be missed more imo.

It is early days on these engines - they will be noticeably quicker as the season goes on.

When I watch F1 I use all my senses. Sight, smell, but especially sound. The crowd is not as important as the cars. I want my senses rocked by serious horsepower.

rosberg was not pushing his car, and are the cars even being pushed to the max?

Last years cars where evolutions over a few years with this years cars having massive changes.

I reckon by the end of the year they will be doing similar times.

I also wouldn't be surprised if in 12 months time they are lapping faster than 2013.

V10s? No.

Has to be a V12, preferably a Ferrari one from 94/95 that revved to 15000rpm. (Skip to about 35s in)

The 91/92 Honda wasn't bad either. (3m25s)

Here's some Senna at flat chat :

I'm so wounded i never went with my uni mates, we were going to go camp at Spa for the weekend. You only see the cars for like 20 seconds, then they are gone. It's all about the sound!I'll still watch it ..but still, it's like the cars aren't even moving when you watch it on telly..it's weird.
