2014 FIFA World Cup Qualifying 7/8/11 September *** Spoilers ***

Thought Cleverley played well. Kept the ball well and moved it quickly to a teammate (something English players don't tend to do)

Then Milner got the ball..

Yea cleverly plays pretty advanced but gets no goals or assists in a 5-0. I know he needs time but he doesn't seem.to have that extra edge that someone like fabregas could bring.

Also Frank you can't use fergie as a sign of quality of a player in defence if cleverly as i said before. He picks carrick every week for years and you must realise how bad he really is
therefore fergies view is questionable.

So just because he doesn't look as good as Fabregas at the moment, he shouldn't be given a chance?

I thought Cleverley did reasonably well, my main issue with him at the moment is that he clearly has a lot of energy, so tries to do a bit of everything, all over midfield. He needs a defined role.

Carrick isn't 'really bad', he's just not a particularly exciting player.

No what im saying is he looks okay but given how advanced position and that we scores 5 goals you'd think he might have an assist on one or even have scored himself but he fluffed a few shots really. Carrick is really bad for a man utd. And did you see when he came on for England? Lol.

hehe, at Utd he won't get a defined role, he was often deeper than Carrick last game, largely because Carrick is inept defensively, and offensively from his good form last year it looks like he wants to operate in and around the area behind the front men where Kagawa likes to play and Rooney insists on playing.

Too many cooks and all that. Rooney/Cleverley running around that area is one thing, but you've added Kagawa to the mix, and that seems to have resulted in Cleverley playing way further back in the last game. Long term can he play there, who knows, I don't think he looked particularly effective against Southampton but it was the first time I've seen him play that far back.

With Rooney/Kagawa playing in the same area, if those guys all start Cleverley either needs to adapt and get good defensively and from deeper, or he won't be starting.

Though a question might be if he looks good there for England, and he looks good there for Utd while Rooney is out, who will start to fit that particular role better?

Do shut up

Lallana has been called up to replace Wallcott :D

Common sense is very slowly knocking on the England management door....

Fingers crossed for a Lambert call up next month to "solve the lack or Rooney or Carroll problem"

We've been having this debate for years, the way players are called up is an utter joke. Lallana should have been called up for the Euro's really, seeing as we had no one decent out on the left, and in the same way Chamberlain only got called up because he left us to bench warm at Arsenal :(

Sterling has only happened because there is a little hype about him being better than Downing, which isn't a massive achievement... But there will always be a list of players that should be called up instead of City/United's bench warmers...

Oh and "Dyer also stated that Sauron is responsible for giving him pace" :p

Not sure where all this negativity about Carrick is coming from, he's reliable, similar to Pirlo, good at passing &uses the ball effectively i think. He's not great defensively but neither is Pirlo like...

Similar to Pirlo, looooollllll.

To sum up, no he's not. Pirlo sometimes gets the ball and chooses the safe pass 20 yards to someone free on the wing, most of the time he doesn't, he finds an attacking forward pass and gets the team moving up the pitch, he's as comfortable in space in his own half as 10 yards outside the opposition box being closed down and turning into space and finding the killer pass.

Carrick ONLY does the sideways passing, its the easiest job in football today, he can't do the rest. In that sense Carrick is like EVERY player in football because everyone can pass sideways under no pressure to someone in plenty of space.

Carrick is crap, and Pirlo is NOT useless defensively, the two players have nothing in common, and Carrick isn't reliable.

If you take up one of the 11 positions on the pitch with a guy who sits in an area that requires defensive work, can't defend and isn't good going forwards, you're wasting a spot on the team, nothing less.

No disrespect to Lallana, as he's looked good the times I've seen him, but what does Nathan Dyer have to do to get a callup? :(

While Dyer has improved since leaving Saints he doesn't have the same potential as Lallana IMO. Roy has said he is bringing these guys in for experience rather than intending to play them right now and that would be wasted on someone like Dyer who is never going to be good enough to hold down a place in the England team. Realiastically if we have to put Dyer on the plane to Brazil we are screwed and that doesn't mean he is a bad player it just means that he is maybe good enough to get the odd bit of bench time when we have some players out injured and I'd rather try to take a punt on some players with more potential at this stage.

Similar in that they play football? because thats the only thing similar about them.
