2016 : A Pivotal Year For AMD, Nvidia, PC Gaming And VR

both Vive and OR are using the same screen and the same type of optics (Fresnel lenses), the smear from bright objects on a dark screen is what you get from fresnel lenses so no HTC haven't magically removed that

HTC have the passthrough camera and the controllers are shipping with it, but it also sounds like they will be priced significantly higher, so objectively, from a consumer point of view, they are horses for courses, some people might want the controllers and camera, others might be more interested in the cheaper price - then there is also the fact that they are beating them to market - early adopters (which mostly what VR at this point is aimed at) are going to jump on the first one available regardless, and then only upgrade when a significant change is made, like better resolution

yea tom's hardware did a video first look, dont know how to embed it, so just gonna Link here to the article with the video, in the video the guy explain how they got rid of the artifact, 1:30min in the video it's called Mura correction.
and yest the price is gonna be an important point, we are just gonna have to wait and see when they are announced.

its software, its also moire... and rid
if its a software update it will be trivial for OR to do the same

moire correction won't totally get rid of the light aberration either, if you have say big white text on a pure black background it will still be there, moire correction will only help so much, and yes OR have already implemented something along the same lines but they called it "black smear correction" iirc

most TV's / phone displays etc already incorporate it as they use multiple layers to make up the display

sorry even if my english isn't that good i should have spotted the E at the end or rid, my mistake.
pretty sure it's Mura correction, they spelled it at 1:40min, sounded like Mura not moire, then again my english is meh, so need someone to double check.
and am not really sure it's just software, they delayed the release for hardware change, might be the screens or the lenses, anyhow the artifact is gone, and that was my point.

I have the strong impression I'm not gonna be home till just before 5... that's an annoyance to me for some reason. Pre-ordering 45 mins later than everyone else is just unacceptable :p

Haha, I will be at work at 2pm but will be taking my wallet with me and down tools at 15:55 regardless of what is happening :D

Do we have a list of what Rift vs Vive differ from each other? Am leaning more towards Vive only because
1. HTC is my go to Phone manufacture
2. Steam is my number one gaming platform.

other than that I have no clue!

Definitely plan on getting the Vive but could be seriously tempted to get an Oculus too based on some of the feedback form people who’ve used it. Alien Isolation on Oculus sounds terrifying!

Would like to try them out first though, if anywhere s doing that.

Will all games work on both? for example you said Alien Isolation on Oculus I guess Vive would work also..

I can find the spec for Vive display res is 2160x1200 each eye plus 90fps that's quite a decent spec. Can not find confirmed res for Oculus though.

hard to say, gonna need to wait for the release of both, and compare reviews.
although everything seem to be similar untill reviewed, Vive seem to be the one with unique features not on oculus.
-Vive have the lighthouses, these are 2 sensors you put in your room for accurate tracking, they help you map the room, set a safe space to move in it, help track the headset, help track the controller motion, and you have a camera that allow you to see stuff while you have your VR headset On, so you dont have to remove it everytime, to get a drink or grab your phone etc.
-oculus have headphones.
not being a jerk, but serioulsy that's the only thing i can think off, that oculus have over Vive.

Vive seems to be more like, put your VR and stand up walk, and use your motion to play, oculus is more like sit in a chair and enjoy.

Edit: both have the same resolution 1080x1200 per eye, and think of it just like a monitor, your pc is still doing all the work

I kind of agree. I like the fact that the Vive has the camera but for me, I will be sitting down as I don't have the room to run around (and I am far too fat) :D

Vive for movement and Oculus for lazy fat people :D

Pricing is going to be a massive factor in the success of VR. If VR is too expensive, then it is going to have to pack in more of a wow factor to get the casual user to adopt early.

Might be worth selling at close to cost price just to get the technology into people's homes.

both have the same resolution 1080x1200 per eye, and think of it just like another monitor you put on your head :p , i can't imagine if each vendor locked the software for each headset, will fragment the install base, make it less profitable for developpers, that would be the best way to kill VR before it starts, thank god they dont wear microsoft goggles.

technicaly it's 90hz, the eye need the refresh rate to be over 70hz, and 90 being the safe spot for extra dip in fps, so as long as it's refresh rate then devs found a cheaper solution, display some fps then rescan others to get the refresh rate, so the eye doesnt see any artifact, with negligible processing power, thats how sony is able to do it on the PS4, and that's how it's gonna be done on VR titles.

No 2 for me is basically ftw. I believe the Rift can play some steam games but the Vive has full steamVR game support of nearly 200 games and counting.

I have watched loads of films on it and it is incredible. Blu rays are the best and they just look amazing. This is one of the big reasons for me desperate to grab the CV1, the reviews I have read have said how much better the screen door is and that is one of my only caveats with the DK2.

I have been watching some films on my Samsung VR.

They work great, if you get used to the Poor Resolution its great. Clear and crisp.
Looks better on the S6 Range too.

If the rift has Far more resolution again then great!

all they need is a patch, to calibrate the game to the headset, it wouldn't be an issue at all for devs to do that for games already released, not all games can take advantage of VR features, but the least they can do is allow you to play the games using them.

I'm unsure myself of how Oculus would or could get round it. My only thought is why have the Vive as a selling point for Valve and SteamVR if other headsets have the same compatibility

googling Mura comes up with a wikipedia page that says that its a japanese word that is often used (I am guessing by americans) as a synonym for moire

sounds more like another case of americans not being able to spell and making it up as they go along
