2016 : A Pivotal Year For AMD, Nvidia, PC Gaming And VR

Weren't NV doing some Trump-esque bragging that they had a better headset in the works that solved motion sickness and all these ails?

Apparently there is a pretty clear upgrade path for the tech to take as the years roll on, if they keep upping the rez/hz and tweaking the IQ and dropping the price adoption + support will snowball. But fact is most people can't afford £500. They can afford iPhones though somehow...

You are confusing afford with justify. I can afford to purchase one (or more) of these I just can't justify the price given the current IQ quality. Everyone has different and valid reasons for justifying purchasing one. IMHO if you can afford to spend £350 on one of these luxury items then you can afford £500, afford has nothing to do with it for most of us on this forum.

sounds a bit more promising - I know people said they were able to tune out screen door with DK2, but I just couldn't... if it really is to the point you can't see it even if really trying then that would be great

The screen door effect was the first thing I noticed but I was able to see past it in time (if that makes sense) plus the only game I really am playing is ED and that with some tweaks looks amazing on the DK2, so can only imagine it will be even better on the CV1. I do hope that cross vendor is supported though, as I really don't want to have to buy both to play the games I want.

What did they say was needed for total immersion? 8K? And a silly refresh rate, 240?

Nvidia haven't been working on a consumer headset, but they have been working with MIT on display tech. They've been working on mulit-layered displays which have allowed them to pull off some neat tricks - offsetting the displays slightly to increase the effective pixel density, offsetting the refresh of each layer to increase the effective refresh rate and the latest was creating multi layers of depth to allow the eyes to focus more naturally.

This is sounding like 4th gen stuff though, even 2nd gen will probably just be what we have announced now but with a 4k display.

They need to move away from thinking of the display as an image the eye sees and more towards thinking of each pixel of the display as a mini projector so the software stack has to calculate what that pixel needs to send to the eye as a sensor in order for the image inside the eye to make up a realistic image.

While I have only tried DK1 I found it an horrendous experience overall. Not because I get motion or car sickness or because it makes me look like a moron when I wear it but because the low res poor quality images were severely detrimental to the overall experience.

I haven't seen anything that says the consumer version has sufficiently addressed those image quality issues.

I have to say that the DK2 was considerably better than the DK1, to the point where games like Elite: Dangerous / FSX were certainly very playable, if a little tricky when trying to make out smaller details. I used DK2 heavily and was very impressed, even with the obvious technical limitations. I've pre-ordered and I can't wait.

After reading the article from Upload you posted I had a nose about and found another article on the 35 games due in 2016 for VR and there were a few exclusives for both Oculus and PS VR.

I am not a big fan of exclusives as I think that it could fracture the market before it has even started. I too would like all VR games on all Headsets to be honest. I don't want to have to pick one over the other because of exclusivity of games/Software especially if the alternative headset has better tech etc...

Hey, hopefully you first adopters would want to sell on your DK2s to part finance your purchases so that people who cannot afford £500 could at least get into VR a bit cheaper. That's if they continue to support the Dev kits after the CV1 release, of course?

I have put my DK2 up for sale in the MM as per my Mrs request :D

As for how it works, this is a really poor example but you get to see how the headtracking works at least.

Now imagine everything in proper 3D and you are almost there. An incredible experience in truth and 1 that needs to be tried first hand.

personally i cant wait for a teardown, will show us where they threw their money at, i know that the games/control/remote wont exceed like 50$ cost to them.
and hope for next pre-order not to be a bundle only offer.
btw i am wonering, if they are selling it at cost, then you will never see discounts, and they would never sell them at retailers right ? because the price will be like what 1K$?

Well my DK2 is sold for a fair price and has made my purchase far more palatable to the Mrs :D I am missing it already :( Roll on March.

There is a breakdown of why it's more expensive. The main things appear to be the OLED 90hz screen and the lenses as well.

I honestly at moment can't justify the £500 they are asking even it is cost at moment but with the screen being such a cost then manufacturing costs will drop as OLED improves over the years and it also depends on the quantities of units they are producing.

If we are talking about 5000 units then hopefully if they pick up in the next six months and they are producing 50000 units instead then we cold see a small reduction in costs there too.

Maybe if someone is willing to let me try it then I'll consider it more then.

Pay for the best, then you get the best :p

All of a sudden I am really interested in one of these. Must be awesome really, totally immersive. Possibilities are quite frankly endless it would seem.

As I mentioned before I knew a lot of people interesting in getting an OR or a Rift(probably close to 10!). But that number has gone down to zero once they priced them at £500 in the UK and also the fact, even if we added VAT to the US price,we are still paying around 20% more for the OR over here.

Erm, have you checked the exchange rate recently
$599 is £413, with 20% VAT that's £495

Depending on what state people are in they are also paying $30-60 sales tax as well anyway

I completely agree that the price will be offputting to many (and would've prefers the option to not have headphones and controller I'll never use), but UK-US pricing is not the issue.

Oops, but even then £500 is just way too much. They need to be aiming for £300 at most for an entry level version.

Why £300 lol?

Are we just making up figures now, why shouldn't they be aiming for £200 entry level?

As you can see it's still selling very well at £500 so I'm not quite sure why it needs to be £300.
