2016 : A Pivotal Year For AMD, Nvidia, PC Gaming And VR

Personally I would be OK paying £500 only if I had some experience.
Not having any experience 500 is to much a gamble..

My eyes at the moment is set on the HTC vive.

Wonder if it will become a loss-leading war like consoles were/are?

I hope not, as that would mean they claw back the money through lock-in.

All of a sudden I am really interested in one of these. Must be awesome really, totally immersive. Possibilities are quite frankly endless it would seem.

It looks total garbage to how it looks through the HMD. It really is a game changer and I can't tell people enough times. Try it, try it, try it.

To a certain extent it is going to happen - Oculus have an in house studio and are already saying 20 titles in 2016 and on the other side Valve obviously have quite big sway with a number of devs to be able to also do exclusive titles - now, valve have said publicly that SteamVR will be open to all other headsets, but in practice SteamVR does not currently work very well at all with the Rift DK's, arguably you could say "because beta" but it doesn't currently bode very well

The Rift not working well with Steam VR isn't a fault of Valve themselfs, and more to do with Oculus not optimising or fixing their SDK to work correctly with Steam VR.

Much like how ED doesn't work well with the Rifts latest SDK, Oculus change something and then devs have to go back and fix it. Why bother while its changing all the time, why not just wait for an official release, in the mean time get it working flawlessly on the Vive instead :)

I didn't have any issues to speak of with the DK2 and SteamVR. I did find the 0.6 SDK worked better than the 0.8 SDK though but that might have been just a me thing as others seemed to be ok.

Why £300 lol?

Are we just making up figures now, why shouldn't they be aiming for £200 entry level?

As you can see it's still selling very well at £500 so I'm not quite sure why it needs to be £300.

The dev kit was $350 so personally I thought it wouldnt be much more if anything at all. It's almost double the price for retail. I think thats why I and others are scratching their heads at the ridiculous price.

They sold the dev kits at a loss. No way would they do that with the retail release and they have stated they are selling at cost. I really do expect the Vive to be £600 minimum but purely guessing here and they might be able to source cheaper parts.

There is a breakdown of why it's more expensive. The main things appear to be the OLED 90hz screen and the lenses as well.

I honestly at moment can't justify the £500 they are asking even it is cost at moment but with the screen being such a cost then manufacturing costs will drop as OLED improves over the years and it also depends on the quantities of units they are producing.

If we are talking about 5000 units then hopefully if they pick up in the next six months and they are producing 50000 units instead then we cold see a small reduction in costs there too.

Maybe if someone is willing to let me try it then I'll consider it more then.

There's no change to the lenses from the dev kit, and there was OLED screens in the dev kit albeit at a little less res. You're basically paying double the price for a little bit more res.

I didnt know they are selling at a loss. I still dont believe either, that there is no-one fleecing us out of a large chunk of £ for these headsets. I'm sure there is an NVidia badge stuck somewhere on them.

Haha.

I have absolutely no idea and don't really care as the price was acceptable to me, so I ordered. The Nvidia bit made me chuckle :D

Please form an orderly queue outside Gregs house tomorrow morning at 9am.......Bring a packed lunch.

Gregs wife will NOT be serving tea or coffee unless he charges on the door.

Maybe this is why they say that there is "Always a long queue outside Greggs" :p

I do lots of baking and cooking :D

The DK2 is sold now sadly and playing ED on a monitor is poo lol. Jedifragger has it now but not long to wait till March 28th, albeit it will feel like an eternity :(

I doubt they are selling "very well" at that price as the price increase over the dev kits is massive. The nearly 10 or so people I knew who were interested just lost interest and they were more gamers than hardware enthusiasts. I know 4 people who bought the dev kits at under £300 who are just going to stick with them and not bother and those guys are hardware enthusiasts. I know somebody else who helped with the kickstarter,so at least he gets one for free.

I know zero people who are interested at £500(most are not hardware enthusiasts on forums BTW),and thats like a dozen people, but everyone I knew said £300 at most was a fair price.

Also, maybe you should also look at things like graphics cards - one of the reasons the GTX970 sold so well is because it was under £300.

I know FAR more people running a GTX970 or maybe a R9 290 or R9 390 than a GTX980 or GTX980TI. The same goes with CPUs - I know nobody who has spent more than £300 for a gaming CPU.

This and also as one of my mates pointed out the launch timing is hilarious. They launched AFTER Christmas. If they launched before Christmas they might have even got a few extra sales.

I am sure there are hardware enthusiasts who are like "I will 150% buy it at even a £1000",but I get the impression outside those people, the reception to the pricing has been rather meh outside the biggest OR and HTC Vive fans.

We have different circles Cat. The few gamers I have spoken to that I personally know don't feel that £500 is too much at all and 2 of the 3 that had a go have pre-ordered as well. They have also had a go on my DK2 that Jedi now has and the third guy is on the fence because of the price and being fair to him, it is a lot of money with his family responsibilities.

Well they are launching at the end of march, 3 months after xmas.

I've preordered, and I know a few others who have. All of whom (including me) will happily cancel if the Vive looks to be a better bet.
