2016 : A Pivotal Year For AMD, Nvidia, PC Gaming And VR

it's been reviewed by many ppl, and they agree that it's better than DK2, not just the screen, but the lenses adjustment and tracking is better

quick presentation

Well, I had a dk2 and found it unusable, whatever I get next needs to be significantly better, if the Rift isn't it will be sold on as soon as I get it, the current state of the OSVR it would be a big step backward by comparison

here is a good watch, interview with palmer about oculus, and the reason for it's price.

then an interview with Valve about Vive.

true, i know i wouldn't :p , but there are ppl who doesn't need or want all the features, they might pick it to watch movies, or play sim games, stuff they dont need motion controllers n stuff.
discounted osvr or 2nd hand might get as low as 100-150$, so ppl could pick one just for the heck of it.

To be fair though, its cheaper than, and a bit less good, than a DK2, so you could just get a DK2 for cheap

Anyone with a smartphone can try VR to about the same standard by spending £25 on one of those ebay jobbies, particularly with most smartphones now coming with 2560 screens

Agreed but these are new and not second hand, so a good tempter at least. If I hadn't had the DK2, I would have grabbed that SamsungVR to go with my S6 and by all accounts, it does a reasonable job.

I've just ordered one of those cheapo plastic phone holders to see if I can get into the whole VR thing, I reckon it has got to be worth a tenner just to see if the experience makes me want to invest more.

They are horrible.

I would save the £10

If you want a taster and have a Samsung Phone then go on ebay and buy a £79 - £100 Samsung VR. Thats as close to the rift / others your going to get for cheap.

you can't compare the experience with that, but soon most big stores will put sampling area for VR, because educating ppl about the product will be essential ifor VR, so you will get a chance to test it before hand, unless you live in a really remote place, and you never travel :p

My mate has google cardboard and I watched the Titans of Space demo. It did a reasonably good job but in terms of DK2 comparison, not even close. It is a good way to see if you would be interested in VR though, so I wouldn't knock it.

You do realise that the Samsung VR is just a very expensive version of the google cardboard, it runs the same type of apps but costs 10 times the price.

Yes in 3 or 4 months time there might very well be demo sets in the stores and when they arrive I will have a go. I would most certainly have to test out something that was going to cost £500+.

Otherwise it would be like someone saying hey mate here's a diggerywhat you love it for sure, yours for only £500, er what does it do? You stick it on your head and it shows you stuff, don't worry most people don't get sick or nauseated by it, go on it only £500.:)

It was about 7pm when I decided to look into this a bit more seriously, that started with downloading the google cardboard app on my note 3 and then just holding the phone in front of your face, put your hand vertically in front of your nose and bam there you go the cheapest version of VR. Ok yes it sucked but immediately I could see the potential and the pitfalls, for me I cannot focus on the screen until it is a certain distance away, its my eyesight that is bad and with my glasses it is even worse. So that is a major stumbling block, but even so I can see the potential, quick trip to a popular south American jungle and for £9.98 I have a plastic phone holder and harness arriving on Saturday. I chose this particular model because some of the reviews for it mentioned that its focus was a bit too far away than others they had tried, sounds perfect for me.
If it does a good enough job to really grab my attention, then I will look into the full VR experience, but if it doesn't work for me, then unfortunately VR wont be for me, and if necessary the phone holder can go back, so the whole experience will cost me a trip to the post office and couple of quid in postage.

I will post up my experience with it once I have tested it out.

You need lenses to get it in focus so close to your face

Yes you do, but my Varifocal glasses don't allow me to focus that close while looking straight ahead, this headset has adjustable lenses so hopefully I can get a good enough focus to make the experience enjoyable.

This makes no sense.

Have you actually tried any lenses at all? I cannot focus on anything that is as close as my phone in cardboard, hence the lenses. That's their job.

I'm sorry in what way doesn't this make any sense, the way varifocals work is that you need to look through the bottom part of the lens to have clear focus on close objects, you cannot do that with a screen on the end of your nose, unless you lower the whole screen down a few inches. As I said once I have the screen mount I will test it out an put up my thoughts.

I hate wearing my glasses with the DK2 but I need to. I'm very near sighted. May revisit contacts lol.

This is something that it is very easy to forget/not realise, every bodies eyes are different, what works for one might not work for another. Myself I couldn't get on with contacts at all, but of course loads of people use them no problem.
