2016 Chilli Growers Thread

Does anyone have experience with germination in a heated propagator?

I keep reading about the paper towel and zip bag method on here, should I do this and place in the propagator or could that dry them out too quickly?

This guy seems to keep them really wet during the germination process whilst in a heated propagator:

Any advice?

In a heated prop you need a small sealed plastic bag to keep the tissue moisture in otherwise it will simply evaporate and condense on the lid of the propagator.

That's all that's required.

I transfer them to the seedling plugs as soon as the root starts appearing. This gives it fast access to nutrients and also gives some resistance for the seed leaves to be pulled out by the seedling.

I just left my Chilli plants at work, sitting about, with minimal maintenance over the last few months.

I'm not sure why, but one of the plants produced this tiny specimen. I ate it today...

If you get flowers but no fruits its lack of pollination if you're growing at home they need the greenhouse door left open on warm days to let the pollinating insects in. Tomatoes can be easily hand pollinated but peppers not so much. Might be worth a try though.

You can pollinate with just a cotton ear bud or finger. No biggie.

The main reasons for:
* dropped/drooping leaves - lack of water/cold draught
* dropped flowers - water/immature plant - give it some chilli focus and see if it changes

Basically if it's happy you'll get fruit.. otherwise you'll need to work out what has caused the problem.. #no-sherbert-sherlock :D

Can someone recommend some seeds please?
Me and the Mrs are not fans of that much heat, so I'm think sweet chilli's and maybe one or two mild/medium chillies that I can give out to my brother etc.

Got to go and pick up an electric propogator off my gran (it was my grandads) to help get them started.

Curry f1 they are so easy, medium heat and well great for making curries.
Every year they were by far the least fussy, biggest cropers and most used.

Now I have to use supermarket chills fir curries :(

Lemon drop (aji limon) are great. Low to medium heat, with a hint of citrus. Found them to be very easy to grow and cropped well.

Super chillis and sweet peppers are out of the propagator now. Just waiting for the cayennes to show some life.

Completely forgot about this, i might need to order some plugs as time is pushing on. After the fungys wiped out my plants last year its been 2 years since i grew my first plants.....and i still gave 50 or so Aji Limons in my freezer out of the 300- 400 i harvested off my i plants. They have been my go to chili for a year and a half now.

I bought a Chilli kit from Wiko's this week-- all it is really is a Pot noodle pot with a small flower pot inside and pack of seeds - What I did last year was put a plastic beer glass over it and all 10 seeds germinated on kitchen window sill.

Planted out when big enough into single pots then grow bags in greenhouse. :)

Potted on the jalapenos and apaches today as they were starting to fill out their first planters. Dog tried to lend his assistance but I don't think he quite got it :p

Looking good there RossG. Its great when we get the first good bit of sun and they really start to shoot up. Wish I had grown some now :(.

I forgot about them :o

Some of them have seeded, others have not. I've put them all into compost from the kitchen towel now. Time to see if they properly geminate and grow.

Oops :o

All 5 of my Aji Limons have hatched, along with 8 of the other 15 seeds I planted.

I bought some 3" pots last weekend ready to pot them on. Some of the Ajis are getting close to the cover over the seed tray, so I'm keeping an eye on them in case need to pot them on before weekend.

What size pots do people use as the plants get bigger? Will a 12" pot be suitable for the final pot?

I have a few seedlings now just developing their second set of leaves. They've been loving the recent sunlight :D

Only one sunflower has germinated :/ so looks like it's a bit hit and miss with them.

Will replant the remaining chilli seeds as the others seemed to have died off..

Ordered plugs before anyone? Where from? I've been so busy this year, my rushed germination attempt seems to have failed and may end up getting plugs.
