2018 Chilli Growing thread

I don't think the size matters too much, but the bigger the better to help them survive slug/snail attacks. A small chilli plant can be decimated overnight by a few slugs. I don't like the idea of using slug pellets on food plants, so it can be hard keeping them away. I tried copper wire and egg shells with some success, but still ended up having to pick a few off every day .

The main thing is to harden them off by placing them in a sheltered location outside for a few hours every day for a week or two, so they can get used to changing temperatures, full sun and breeze. Also might be a good idea to use a garden cane if they're a bit leggy.

If yours are small then it might just be that they need potting up. Mine shot up after I potted up into 3L pots from the size they were in the first picture i posted in this thread.
Cool thanks for the tips!

I'll have to repot them soon then I think and see how it goes.

Good shout also on the hardening off, didn't think of that

Researching nutrition - Epsom Salts (Manganese Sulphate) with a small amount works well. It's used in the production of chlorophyl (the green) that gives the plant energy.

Would Tomorite contain Manganese Sulphate?

Edit: Ahh you mix with water and spray it on the leaves? You can buy it pretty cheap from a seller on ebay so I might give it a try. Although the Tomorite seems to be working pretty well so far. One of the plants leaves were turning a bit yellow, but a dose of tomorite turned it back to dark green!

My plants have hardened off nicely and were left out all today in full sun. Hoping to get the Birdseye demon to start fruiting.

Re-potted mine into larger pots and had them outside each day when sunny, most seem to start to be bushing out, except a couple that are still really small and not showing a great deal of growth or bulking out. Anything i can do for these two runts?

I got one which is tiny growing in same conditions as one which is 4 times the size.

Going to see if it improves over the next week before trying some chilli focus

I don't know what it is with the Aji Limon/ Lemon Drop chilli plants, but I always seem to have issues with the leaves turning yellow and falling off, or crisping up and going brown on the leaf tips.

Googling it suggests it could be too much fertiliser, but i don't think it's that as the other 4 plants are all fine. The Aji Limon grew much faster and larger than the other plants, so i'm thinking it could be lack of nutrients if anything. Anyone else had this issue with this particular chilli plant?

so far not noticed it with my aji limon plants, had 6 of the 8 seeds grow and 1 died after 1st week, stalk went limb at base when it only had its first two seedling leafs and that was the end of it. The other 5 so far are all looking healthy and look to be bushing out now

I notice a few of the leaves on yours are looking a bit yellow as well, so maybe its just normal with these chillies.. I have grown them a few times now and they always crop well, despite the yellowing leave, so I don't think its an issue.

The leaves turning brown is a new one for me though, so hopefully thats just down to me letting the soil get too dry.

Just noticed on two of my chili plants on the kitchen windowsill. They have some little green fly on the leaves (look like green fly). I have read a spray bottle of water and a dash of washing up liquid can help eradicate them.

Any views on this ?

I use the aphid bug spray. Better at killing aphids than fairy liquid.

Mine coming on nicely now, ready to move up to the poly tunnel at the allotment.
I am having a raging war up there with slugs, but after resorting to chemical warfare I am winning every battle with a wipeout of the enemy

new waves arrive daily to dash themselves on my tiny blue pellet defences. I also have a nice slug trap with a lager bath inside for any that fancy a drink before a munch.

The strawberries however are different, much harder to form a defensive line here, so having to resort to a few pellets and some daily inspections to try to win.

Slugs (not snails) seem to be a real plague this year.

My little plants have a big aphid issue.

After spraying with a bug killer there still happy so I suspect they're resistant - leading to me trying a ladybird from the garden.. only for the ladybird to die after two aphids..

I think I may need to give them a 10 minute immersion in a bucket to kill off the aphids.

what do you mean by 10 minute immersion?

There's a Veg clear which is designed for eating veggies.. I have tried that but some aphids are resistant.. it also kills kadybirds. Better get some predators :)

i genuinely don't see the point of the really hot ones. what do you guys do with them?

like i've seen stuff where they say. stick 1 drop of this stuff into a stew, etc. like what is the point? why not stick a whole chilli in of something less hot?

Make different sauces mostly. Sometimes stitch a mate up by throwing a few bits on a pizza... This will be my first year with home grown ones tho so will probably have way too many.
