2023 - how's it been for you?

Weird year,

Started off on a low, trying to pay off stupid debt whilst trying to save up for a house (renting) which is almost impossible at the moment, after I moved back from overseas and cancelled my plans to move to the US.

Got a new job paying very good money, and moved back in with parents in June so I can power-save, managed to clear all of my debt (£20k) and I'm now in a good place. Hoping to buy a house end of 2024.

I also do a lot of fishing, and managed to catch a personal best mirror carp of 56lb, which was a big highlight for me in 2023,

Gone stupidly fast....

Some bad, some good... i think i been to the UK 3x this year so bizzare.

yeah its a bit of treading water... i dont see 2024 being super, another year of treading water.

a trip to NY put on hold.... Works fine, life's fine.

Grim. Bills bills bills price of everything rocketing working ridiculous hours to try and keep head above water. Mum's dementia is getting worse she may have to go into a care home soon. The well off are getting noticeably richer and everyone else is getting noticably poorer. I've never been a socialist but I'm starting to think they may have a point. I'm still alive though so thats good news.

Having received the news this month that the mother in law has terminal brain cancer, and the prognosis is 8-12 months, both 2023 and 2024 are likely to be rather cack overall.

My brother is now also estranged from my family due to him acting like a complete bell over the course of the start of 2023.

To add insult to injury the MIL is the last of either of our parents, and by extension the last grandparent in the family. We lost my mum in late 2021 and both our fathers have been gone since 2009.

I'm positive but there have been a lot of personal challenges this year which I hope to see the back of. Business is going well though and I love my job. Health is good too.

2023 has been alright really.
Paid off about 15k of debt, another 15ish to go, so light at end of tunnel of being in debt for so many years. I'll be debt free next December and have 0 idea what to do with money spare.
Work has been alright, got more pay rises.
Taxes have been **** as they've taken my pay rises pretty much.

Family is healthy

Running has been a mixed bag this year, some good bits and some niggling injuries.

If i can get the same next year but with no injuries i'll be happy.

Could've been better, could've been worse.

Started off with tenants not talking and not paying (boo), managed to get them out and sell the house and give up landlording (yay!).

Besides that up and down as most years.

Seems like a lot of people had a bad year. I was hoping with COVID no longer being in the foreground that things would be picking back up again.

Going to carry 13 days holiday forward.

Good shout. I carried 9 days from 2022 over to 2023, so that contributed towards this year. I've used them all up now so not carrying any more over to 2024.

Pants, got cancer! :D

Really sorry to hear that :-(

Since covid 2021,22,23 have been pretty much nothing years

I'd thought by 2022 that things would have picked up but hope 2024 is a better year.

Gone stupidly fast....

That's called - getting older! It's the age thing I find that as I get older, the years go by quicker. Look at, say 1995, I was age 17 and the year seemed longer or 'normal' at least. Now at age 45, 2023 seemed much quicker.

Worst year in many years. Can't wait to see the back of it

Hope 2024 is better for you.

Cost of living etc I know stresses everyone is facing.

I'm not short of cash as my salary has kept up with the cost of living financial crisis, but it still feels like I'm taking a battering from energy and food bill. It's frustrating that I have nothing to show for it, simply because the numbers on my spreadsheet are higher than 2 years ago.

Thanks. Me too. Can't be worse. That's the plus side!

Started off like any other year, went to Japan, shot my best friend's wedding. Visited Croatia for the first time, loved it. Went to Morocco to meet a girl I've been chatting to for a while...got a girlfriend. :)

So, it's been good!

Great until my tax bill :(
Big tax bill = big profit...:D

Decent year for me. Started a new drug regime for asthma control (injection every 2 months) that has transformed my lungs making me feel normal (if unfit). Only became available in the UK in 2021 for the highly specific version of (nasty) asthma I have developed.

Work has consumed me somewhat, but ending the year well and my great team makes it mostly fun...and rewarding. Double track day at the Nurburgring booked for July next year and plan to head to Japan for the first time later in the year, West coast US in Jan. Girlfriend likely to move in next year, house consolidation means goodbye mortgage too and then will buy another place at some point, likely Cotswolds or South West coast and build towards a retirement plan.

Amazingly and thankfully both parents still alive into their 80's so that's great too.
