***21.9 Ultrawide Thread***

Most people that I know IRL who are pc gamers are tech savy. The "casuals" that don't notice the difference between 60-120 are the ones that play on consoles hence why they find 30 smooth.

100hz 3440x1440 and 200hz 2560x1080 are just as demanding as each other for single GPU power so there is no point arguing which is better or what the point of them is..... You want more screen real estate space, sharper/clearer image (people use these gaming monitors for work, browsing etc. too) then you go with the 3440x1440 100, if you want better motion/smoothness then you go with 200hz 2560x1080.

Anyway, my original point was that IMO, 2560x1080 is too low for 35" and sacrificing the res. is not worth the extra 100hz, if you disagree with that then fair enough.

Have you read the first post at all?

29" 2560x1080 wins over 23/24" 1920x1080 every time.

- 691200 more pixels
- 21.9 so you get considerably more FOV in games
- more space for work/browsers side by side
- 21.9 films take up the full screen which is far larger than a 16.9 23/24" screen

Not everyone has the space for 34", or has the gpu power for 3440x1440 or has the money to splash out on a 34" 1440 monitor.

Updated OP:

MPC HC with madvr has now solved the issue with films that are shot in both imax and 21.9!

0Pqr5ykh.png.jpg

With this, you no longer need to zoom in manually or worry about zooming in and back out etc. again.

No, it doesn't zoom in for imax scenes...

What that does is for films like the dark knight where you have both imax scenes and 21.9 scenes.

Madvr will detect the black bars and adjust automatically so for imax scenes, it zooms out thus you have only black bars on the side therefore you lose nothing but when 21.9 scenes come on, it will then zoom in automatically so as to get rid of the black bars on top, bottom and the sides then when imax comes back, it zooms out again, rinse and repeat.

As long as MPC is configured to use madvr as the video renderer then madvr will always run with MPC.

I think interstellar is just imax and 21.9, it had a lot of imax scenes. Been a while since I watched it though!

Thanks :)

Initially I was underwhelmed and a few areas are very meh with regards to textures but overall the game does look good and it has grown on me a lot especially once I applied this sweetfx config and of course 21.9 helps make screenshots look even better! :D

If you mean to a 3440x1440 UW screen, not sure exactly but I imagine it would be quite a hit for new AAA games, as posted in the OP, here are some benchmarks for a few games @ 3440x1440:

https://www.reddit.com/r/ultrawidemasterrace/wiki/guide/madmax

As explained in the OP as well, if a game doesn't support 21.9 then there is usually a fix be it manually in a config file or with flawless widescreen, if none of those work then the image will either stretch or you can set the game to 1920x1080/2560x1440 and in the monitor OSD, select 1:1 ratio and play with black bars at the side.

man they do look awesome, super jealous :(

Same here, the more I see of 21.9 the more I think it's definitely the way forward for me. Don't think I can justify the cost until after christmas though :(

They really are awesome when it comes to media/gaming, the problem is once you use one, it makes it very hard to go back to a non 21.9 screen :( I badly want a freesync 144HZ screen but the thought of going back to 16.9 urgh....... here's hoping we will get 29" 2560x1080 144HZ free/g sync screens soon......

Some good news for fallout 4 21.9 users who like to use the power armour, fix for the HUD!

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=554149762

Go to: Documents>My games>Fallout4 open up Fallout4.ini
Under the "[Interface]" copy paste this:

For 3440x1440:

fUIPowerArmorGeometry_TranslateW=0.00001
fUIPowerArmorGeometry_TranslateZ=14.0000
fUIPowerArmorGeometry_TranslateX=0.0001
fUIPowerArmorGeometry_TranslateY=265.0000

And for 2560x1080:

fUIPowerArmorGeometry_TranslateW=0.00001
fUIPowerArmorGeometry_TranslateZ=12.0000
fUIPowerArmorGeometry_TranslateX=0.0001
fUIPowerArmorGeometry_TranslateY=360.0000

Yet to try myself....

Well the new Acer X34 screens look very nice but the price tag is painful, hopefully over the next year we'll start to see a wider choice and more mainstream pricing.

Yeah reports seem positive so far but I rather avoid acer because of the poor CS and I just can't bring myself to spend more than £600 max on a monitor especially when the panel that they are using is the one that every other company is using for their 34" 1440 screens except overclocked to 75HZ and with sync tech..... Hopefully LG, Dell, AOC and Samsung will get their free/g sync 75/100HZ versions out soon.

EDIT:

Also, scope fix for 21.9 too! :D

Yeah I can't justify the high prices of monitors these days when it seems to be the accepted case that you might have to return a couple of them until you get a good one in terms of bleed etc.

I currently have a 1440p/144Hz screen and the high frame rate is nice but to be honest for what I play, with FreeSync working I think I'd be happy to trade down from 144Hz to 75-100Hz to get the 21.9 aspect ratio.

After the superb support BenQ have given me I'd be very happy if they were to release a suitable screen.

Yeah the bleed issues with these 21.9 monitors has been a complete joke and tbh, it has probably put an awful lot of people of the 21.9 monitors and stopped them from becoming a lot more popular :(

All - great thread.

Anyone able to offer experience of running 21:9 with an R9 290X 8GB at 2560x1080? This will be on the LG 34" Freesync screen 34UM67

Thanks in advance.

290 @2560x1080 here and I have no problems running most new AAA games on max without AA and maybe 1-2 settings turned down so with a 290x 8GB and freesync, you shouldn't have any issues.

As pointed out, 1080P @ 34" isn't going to be pleasant though unless you sit pretty far back.... Also, AMD currently don't offer support for 21.9 VSR resolutions.

I haven't used 34" 21.9 screens but on all the other IPS screens I have tried, IPS glow has never really been an issue with a sensible brightness setting and backlight strip imo, only an issue when on dark content and viewing the screen from an angle in my experience.

Supposedly LG has addressed the backlight bleed issues at the production line for their panels although no idea if that is true or not....

TBH, for the price of the Samsung, if I where you, I would be willing to try the acer 34" freesync screen out instead, should be better "overall" aside from blacks/contrast ratio and build/looks and I haven't actually seen many people complaining about any IPS glow & backlight bleed issues.
